Overview
Jacques Bogart is a French men's fragrance house founded in Paris in 1975 [1]. It was created by Jacques Konckier and his wife Régine, who reportedly started with about $4,000 in capital and named the brand after the American actor Humphrey Bogart [2][3]. From the outset the house committed to a single idea — fragrance for men only — and it has kept that focus for its entire history. The brand is owned by Jacques Bogart SA, also known as Groupe Bogart, a Paris-based perfume and cosmetics company listed on the Euronext Paris market [4]. The brand remains active and is sold in more than 90 countries.
The name is borrowed, not endorsed: the Konckier family took the surname of Humphrey Bogart for the brand at its 1975 launch, and no formal endorsement or estate-licensing arrangement is documented.
Origin & founders
According to Groupe Bogart, the house was founded in 1975 around a single philosophy expressed as "I create only for men" [1]. Fragrantica's account of the launch describes Jacques and Régine Konckier creating the brand's debut fragrance that year with a modest budget, the wife's first name appearing variously as Régine and Regina across sources; the French spelling Régine is the more likely form, with Regina reading as a transliteration of it [3].
The debut scent, simply called Bogart, was a leathery composition credited to perfumers Lucien Ferrero and Maurice Maurin. It found an export market quickly: by 1976 it was sold in around 20 countries, and by 1980 in roughly 60 [2].
History & milestones
The brand's commercial breakthrough came in 1980 with One Man Show, an earthy men's scent built around wood and tobacco and composed by Roger Pellegrino. The fragrance became the house's cornerstone and has since anchored a long-running family of editions. In 1982 the company opened a U.S. subsidiary, Fragrance du Monde.
Through the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s the parent company grew mainly by acquiring other fragrance and fashion names. In 1986 Jacques Bogart SA took over the rights to Balenciaga's couture and perfumes and launched a ready-to-wear line, Le Dix [5]. It signed a worldwide license for Chevignon perfumes in 1992, and in 2010 acquired the fragrances and cosmetics business of Carven [1]. The Ted Lapidus relationship illustrates how the group expanded: it already distributed Ted Lapidus fragrance under license before acquiring the fashion house itself. Trade publication WWD reported in November 1995 that Jacques Bogart SA would acquire the loss-making Ted Lapidus house from Altus, a holding vehicle created from Crédit Lyonnais's non-banking divisions [6]. Some sources instead date that acquisition to 1998; the 1995 figure rests on contemporary WWD reporting of the deal, while the later date may reflect a subsequent restructuring or full ownership transfer.
More recently the company moved into retail. In 2014 it bought 13 Nocibé/Douglas fragrance boutiques, and in 2021 it agreed to acquire a further 41 Nocibé perfumeries from Douglas, lifting its French store count to 71 and its worldwide network past 400 [7].
Ownership
Jacques Bogart the brand sits within Jacques Bogart SA, described by the company as an independent family business listed on Euronext Paris that owns or produces under license a portfolio of fragrance and cosmetics names [4]. Alongside Jacques Bogart, that portfolio includes Carven, Chevignon and Ted Lapidus in fragrance, and Stendhal, Méthode Jeanne Piaubert and April in cosmetics. The group is chaired by David Konckier, a son of founder Jacques Konckier [7]. It describes its model as a combined manufacturer and retailer, a structure it credits with allowing it to sell in more than 90 countries.
Philosophy & positioning
The house has stayed deliberately narrow. Since 1975 it has, in its own words, "never ceased to assert its roots in a 100% masculine and virile universe," presenting itself as "a timeless signature of the elegant man" whose fragrances aim to outlast fashion rather than follow it [1]. The original tagline, "I create only for men," still frames how the company positions the line: traditional, bold, woody and oriental men's scents rather than niche or avant-garde perfumery.
Products & innovation
The brand's range centres on the One Man Show line, which began in 1980 and has spawned a series of flanker editions, among them Silver Scent, Oud Edition (2014), Ruby Edition, Emerald Edition and 24K Edition (2022). The 24K Edition, an amber-woody fragrance created by perfumer Dominique Preyssas, is built on notes including tangerine, pink pepper, cardamom, rose, saffron, agarwood, sandalwood and amber. The earlier Bogart and One Man Show scents remain reference points for the house's identity, and the One Man Show family still anchors its product range.
Current status
Jacques Bogart is an active heritage brand. Its parent, Euronext-listed Jacques Bogart SA, has continued to report corporate activity, including the 2021 Nocibé acquisition and reported first-quarter 2021 sales of €48.5 million, and the brand has continued to release new One Man Show editions, the most recent traced being the 24K Edition in 2022. The house marked its fiftieth year in 2025. Day-to-day distribution varies by market; the Dubai-based site bogartperfumes.com, which carries a 2024 copyright, operates as a regional distributor for the brand rather than the corporate owner.
