Overview
Stendhal is a French luxury cosmetics house founded in Paris in 1946 by Roger Thirion, a chemist who named the brand after the writer Henri Beyle, known by his pen name Stendhal [1]. The house began with skincare, makeup and, later, fragrance, and built its early reputation on anti-ageing skincare. Since 1994 it has been owned by the family-run Groupe Jacques Bogart, which continues to develop the brand [5].
The company operates from Paris and manufactures in the Pyrenees, positioning itself at the high end of the market. It remains active, with reformulations, a new skincare active and a fragrance expansion carried out under Bogart in the early 2020s [7].

Origin and founders
Roger Thirion, described as a chemist with a passion for literature and a friend of actresses, created Stendhal in 1946 and opened his first institute on the Rue Royale in central Paris [1]. The house launched that year with Le Noir, a mascara the brand marketed as "the stars mascara." According to the company, Thirion set out to combine cosmetic science with the sensibility of the writer whose name the house carries.
History and milestones
In 1950 Stendhal introduced Epithelium, which the brand describes as the first anti-ageing treatment sold in vials [1]. The house continued to build out its range across the following decades: Sanseverina, formulated with plant extracts, appeared in 1966, and Bio Program, presented as the first hypoallergenic skincare sold in perfumeries, followed in 1980. In 2001 the brand launched Pur Luxe, which ELLE describes as its cult line [3].
By its own account, the house has more than seventy years of experience in cosmetics [2].
Ownership
Stendhal is owned by Groupe Jacques Bogart, a family company controlled by the Konckier family. The brand was acquired from the pharmaceutical group Sanofi, which sold the Stendhal skincare line together with the factory where Stendhal and Nina Ricci cosmetics were manufactured [5]. Sources differ on the year: contemporary WWD reporting and Bogart's own corporate timeline place the acquisition in 1994 [5], while the brand's marketing page on the Groupe Bogart site gives 1998 [6]. Within the parent group, cosmetics and fragrances account for a minority of sales, with the majority coming from beauty retail.
Philosophy and positioning
Stendhal positions itself as a high-end house aimed at what ELLE quotes it describing as "the most demanding women" [3]. The company frames its approach as a blend of science and nature, and links its identity to the founder's heritage and to its French manufacturing base. Products are developed and made in the Laboratoire des Pyrénées, in Mourenx in south-west France, using natural and plant-derived raw materials.
Products and innovation
The brand's range spans skincare, makeup and fragrance. Its longest-standing signature product is Epithelium, the vial-based anti-ageing treatment introduced in 1950; other named lines include the botanical Sanseverina, Bio Program and Pur Luxe.
In 2021 Stendhal introduced a skincare active it calls Elixir de Lys, described as offering anti-spot properties and protection against blue light, developed at its Pyrenees laboratory [4]. The same period saw the brand relaunch its makeup with vegan formulas. According to Premium Beauty News, Bogart reformulated the range to reach over 90 percent ingredients of natural origin and made the packaging more eco-responsible, including refills [4]. ELLE reports that the products are certified vegan, silicone-free and paraben-free [3].
Current status
Stendhal is active. Under Groupe Jacques Bogart it underwent a reformulation and repackaging programme in 2021 and opened a new fragrance chapter with the Les Essences Précieuses collection [7]. The brand is distributed through European selective retail and sells directly through its own site.
