Summary

Overview

Juvena, marketed as Juvena of Switzerland, is a Swiss skincare company founded in 1954 that specialises in anti-ageing facial care [2]. It grew out of the pharmaceutical laboratory Divapharma, set up in Zurich in 1945 by a team of scientists led by Edmund Georg Locher, and took its name from the Latin word juvenalis, meaning youthful [10]. The brand sits in the selective, department-store tier of the market and is sold mainly through perfumeries across Europe.

After passing through several owners over more than half a century, Juvena has belonged since 2010 to the Austrian firm Troll Cosmetics GmbH, and is operated under the legal entity Juvena Marlies Möller AG, based in St. Margrethen, Switzerland [12]. The company remains active, maintaining a current product range and a website carrying a 2026 copyright.

Origin & founders

The brand traces its science back to Divapharma, a pharmaceutical laboratory founded in Zurich in 1945 by a group of scientists under Edmund Georg Locher. The Juvena company itself was established in January 1954 to develop facial care products in collaboration with dermatologists. According to the company, its first launches were two so-called Light Creams, Creme Juvelia and Active Moist, which it says stood out for a light, smooth texture at a time when creams were generally heavy and greasy. An early cream marketed as Vitamin F99 was among the formulations that built the brand's early reputation [10].

History & milestones

Production was established in Baden-Baden, Germany, in 1967. In 1968 the Italian actress Sofia Loren became a brand ambassador and opened the first Juvena Beauty Center in Zurich [2].

The company expanded through acquisition of its own: in 1991 Juvena bought Laboratoires La Prairie [10]. Over the following years it was grouped with related labels — Marlies Möller hair care was integrated in 2002, and in 2006 Juvena, La Prairie, Marlies Möller and the newly launched SBT Skin Biology Therapy were consolidated into the La Prairie Group under Beiersdorf.

In 2009 the brand undertook a wide-ranging relaunch, introducing the Master Cream as a new flagship and discontinuing existing sub-brand names such as Juvedical, Juvelia, Rejuven and Juvenance [11]. Dirk Trappmann, then president of La Prairie, told the trade press he wanted to "blow the dust off" a brand that, in his words, European women "may associate most with their mothers."

Ownership

Juvena changed hands repeatedly during the late twentieth century. It was acquired in 1977 by British American Cosmetics, a subsidiary of BAT Industries [10]. When BAT sold its cosmetics division in 1985, Juvena passed to Beecham, which in 1988 transferred the brand to its management through a buyout. In 1990 the German group Beiersdorf, parent of Nivea, took ownership and folded Juvena into its premium skincare portfolio [9].

In 2010 Beiersdorf sold both Juvena and the Marlies Möller hair care line to Austria's Troll Cosmetics GmbH; the terms were not disclosed [12]. Beiersdorf framed the divestiture as a way to concentrate its resources in the selective market on La Prairie. The brand has remained under Troll Cosmetics ownership since, operated through the Swiss entity Juvena Marlies Möller AG [7].

Philosophy & positioning

Juvena positions youthfulness as, in its own words, "an attitude, a mindset, not just how a woman looks," and describes beauty as a combination of thought, movement, eye expression and skin radiance. The company sums up its three stated pillars as high Swiss quality standards, professional customer care and innovative scientific research, under the mission statement "My cutting edge skincare." Its products are aimed at a mature, perfumery-oriented luxury skincare audience and carry the tagline "Anti-Aging Specialist since 1954" [1].

Products & innovation

Juvena's range spans facial care — cleansing, serums, masks, essences and targeted eye, lip, neck and hand products — alongside body care, a Sunsation sun-protection line and a men's line marketed as Rejuven Men. The Fascianista collection extends into body care with a SkinNova Body cream and serum and a 3D massage roller.

The brand's central proprietary technology is SkinNova SC, which it describes as combining an ingredient drawn from regenerative skin medicine, originally used on burn patients, with a peptide intended to activate the skin's own stem cells [11]. According to the company, the approach "densifies, refines and restructures the skin profile." This technology underpins the Master Cream, a patented flagship product launched in 2009 that retailed for €189 in a 75ml glass jar, with the brand claiming visible results in 28 to 60 days. A second technology platform, Juvenance Epigen, is presented by the company as the meeting point of skin research and epigenetics. Other named ingredients across the range include retinol, hyaluronic acid and a gentle BHA exfoliant derived from guarana.

Recognition

The relaunch of the Master Cream and the 2010 change of ownership were both covered by the trade publication WWD, and the sale was also reported by Premium Beauty News. Beyond Sofia Loren's involvement from 1968, the company has used the former Austrian professional tennis player and Eurosport presenter Barbara Schett as its current brand ambassador, describing her as the "new face of JUVENA" [1].

Current status

Juvena remains an actively traded brand. At the time of its 2009 relaunch it reported roughly 3,200 points of sale across Europe, with additional distribution in Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Cyprus and Turkey, following a selective distribution model [11]. The company's website is maintained and carries a 2026 copyright, with recent launches including an Exfoliating Guarana Mousse, a Retinol and Hyaluron Cell Fluid, the Fascianista 3D massage roller and a Miracle Serum. The brand's own blog channel last published in 2019, but its retail presence, product development and social accounts have continued under Troll Cosmetics ownership.
