Overview
KAI is a Japanese blade and grooming-tools manufacturer founded in 1908 by Saijiro Endo, who began by making folding pocket knives in Seki, a city in Gifu Prefecture long associated with cutlery and swordmaking [8]. From those origins the company grew into a broad maker of cutting tools, and its beauty and grooming range — facial and eyebrow razors, eyelash curlers, tweezers, nail clippers and scissors — sits alongside kitchen knives, medical instruments and industrial blades.
Today KAI operates as a group spanning two principal Japanese entities and more than twenty subsidiaries, manufacturing over 10,000 distinct products and exporting across North America, Europe and Asia [10]. It remains active and global, marking its 115th anniversary in 2023.
The group is organized around two companies. Kai Corporation handles sales and is based in Tokyo, while Kai Industries handles manufacturing from Seki; both date their origins to the original 1908 founding but were each incorporated separately later in the twentieth century. The company positions itself as a global blade maker whose work runs from everyday grooming and kitchen tools to surgical instruments and specialty industrial blades.

Origin & founders
Saijiro Endo started the business in 1908 in Seki, which the company describes as one of the world's major cutlery-producing regions [8]. The region's history of samurai sword manufacturing gave it a deep base of blade-making skill, and Endo's first products were folding knives. The enterprise was formally incorporated as Joint-Stock Company Endo Cutlery Manufacturing Co. in 1920.
The pivot that shaped the modern company came in 1932. As grooming became fashionable in a modernizing Japan, Endo recognized a growing market for shaving tools and established the Seki Safety Razor Manufacturing Co., producing what the company records as the first replaceable-blade razor made in Japan [8]. According to the editorial account by Smoky Mountain Knife Works, his razors were included in soldiers' care packages by the late 1930s and taken up by civilians as well [10].
History & milestones
The company was rebuilt after the Second World War. In 1947 the second-generation Saijiro Endo established Feather Trading Co. in Nagoya to resume operations, and in 1954 two firms were merged to form Sanwa Co., which broadened the business into household products. The brand's identity took shape over the same decades: the Kai trademark was created in 1949, and in 1962 the modern lowercase "kai" mark replaced an earlier "Shell" emblem, with a further trademark update marking the company's 60th anniversary in 1968.
Razor production expanded steadily. A single-blade disposable model, the "Kaijirushi T-Shaped Gold," arrived in 1963, and in 1972 the company launched Beauty L, a razor series aimed at women. KAI added scissors manufacturing in 1973, widening its range of cutting tools beyond razors and knives.
KAI moved abroad early for a Japanese cutlery maker. It set up its first overseas subsidiary, KAI Cutlery U.S.A. Ltd., in Portland, Oregon in 1977, followed by a Hong Kong operation in 1978 and a European base, Kai Cutlery (Europe) GmbH, in Solingen, Germany — itself a historic blade-making city — in 1980. In 1984 the company added a surgical-instruments division and introduced the "Pretty Series" of disposable women's razors.
Two later milestones illustrate the company's emphasis on blade engineering. In 1989 it released the KAI K-II, a blade-replaceable disposable razor, and in 1998 it launched the K-3, which the company describes as the world's first replaceable three-blade razor [8]. In 2000 it released Shun, a high-end kitchen-knife brand introduced to Western markets soon after and later sold in more than thirty countries [9]; the company reports the line reached ten million units by 2022. More recently, in 2022, KAI began selling the "paper razor," a model the company states uses 98 percent less plastic than conventional products [8].
Ownership
KAI operates as a group rather than a single firm. The two principal entities — Kai Corporation, the sales company, and Kai Industries, the manufacturing company — both trace their origins to the 1908 founding, though each was formally established later in the twentieth century. In 1985 the group acquired the Oregon knife maker Kershaw Knives, a move the Smoky Mountain Knife Works account frames as combining Japanese manufacturing with American design [10]. In the United States the group's knives, including Shun and Kershaw, are sold through Kai USA in Oregon [9].
Leadership has passed through several generations of the Endo family. The founder's grandson, Koji Endo, became president and chief executive in 1989 and oversaw the company's modernization [10]; the current corporate profile lists Hiroaki Endo as the chief executive shared across both entities [3].
Philosophy & positioning
KAI presents itself as a global blade manufacturer, summed up in the slogan "Born in Japan, making cutlery for the world." Its stated mission holds that "sharp perspective and cutting-edge technology pioneer the future while genuine consideration and dedication support people's daily lives." In 2023, coinciding with its 115th anniversary, the company renewed this corporate mission under the phrase "Sharpness and Gentleness" [1]. The company frames its vision around five aims: customer delight, employee pride, social happiness, partnership prosperity, and operating as a continuous-learning organization.
Products & innovation
The group divides its catalogue into roughly eight areas, of which beauty and grooming tools are one. Within that segment KAI makes razors and shavers, nail clippers and files, tweezers, eyelash curlers, hair-cutting and eyebrow scissors, brushes and makeup tools. Its beauty-tools portal is structured as an educational resource, with overview pages, manufacturing-process explanations and craftsmanship notes for each category rather than as a direct sales channel.
Several products mark turning points in the company's grooming line. Beauty L (1972) and the Pretty Series (1984) were early entries aimed at women; the Beauty-M razor is a stainless-steel facial and eyebrow razor made in Japan. The replaceable-blade K-3 of 1998 and the low-plastic paper razor of 2022 reflect a continued focus on blade design and, more recently, reduced material use.
Sustainability
In October 2021 KAI established seven sustainability commitments covering product value creation, regulatory compliance, respect for human rights and diverse cultures, and environmental stewardship. The company says its environmental focus includes promoting carbon neutrality, resource efficiency and sustainable procurement. The paper razor, introduced in 2022 with a stated 98 percent reduction in plastic, is the most concrete consumer example of that direction, though the company's sustainability pages do not detail specific certifications or quantified targets.
Current status
KAI is active and operates globally, with a presence the company describes as spanning eight countries and sixteen locations. The group reported combined revenue across its two principal entities for the fiscal year ending March 2025, and maintains active social media accounts. Its most recent prominent activity includes the 2022 paper-razor launch and the 2023 mission renewal tied to its 115th anniversary.
The group is structured as a dual entity, which gives it two recorded headquarters. The corporate and sales arm, Kai Corporation, is based in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward [3]; the manufacturing arm, Kai Industries, and the company's origin remain in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture, where its production facilities are located [10].
