Summary

Overview

Kevyn Aucoin Beauty is an American prestige makeup brand established in 2001 by the makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin (1962–2002) [1][3]. Built around Aucoin's own techniques and philosophy, the line continued after his death the following year and remains in operation today. Since 2021 it has been owned by the Chinese beauty retailer Harmay, which acquired it from the British investment firm Manzanita Capital [3].

The brand carries the name and approach of a makeup artist who shaped a generation of beauty looks. Aucoin helped define the role of the celebrity makeup artist and is widely credited with bringing contouring — the use of light and shadow to sculpt the face — to a mainstream audience [2].

Origin and founder

Kevyn Aucoin was born on 14 February 1962 in Shreveport, Louisiana, and discovered makeup as a child, experimenting on his sister and a friend before moving to New York to build his career. He worked with performers and models including Madonna, Whitney Houston, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford; a 1986 Vogue cover shoot with Crawford, photographed by Steven Meisel, is described as the moment his career took off [2].

Before launching his own brand, Aucoin developed The New Nakeds line in 1984 through Revlon's Ultima II division. Its yellow-undertone foundations and brown-based neutral shades broke with the pastels and bright colours then standard, and the approach is noted as an influence on later brands such as MAC, Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier [2]. He won a CFDA Award in 1995 — according to the brand, the only makeup artist to receive one at that time [1] — and wrote several bestselling books, among them Face Forward (2000), which Wikipedia notes is credited with introducing makeup sculpting and contouring to the general public, though such techniques had long existed in stage and drag makeup [2].

The company was established in 2001 as a collection of cosmetics and tools reflecting Aucoin's artistry. He died in May 2002 from organ failure linked to medication; he had been diagnosed the previous year with a pituitary tumour [2]. The brand has continued since then to carry on his work.

Philosophy and positioning

Kevyn Aucoin Beauty positions itself as a prestige brand rooted in the founder's belief that makeup reveals rather than hides. The company sums up this idea with the line "makeup does not cover, but rather, uncovers your true self," and describes its mission as paving "the way for bold, beautiful, self-expression," daring "to create the unknown, while respecting its heritage." Its stated values centre on empowerment, originality, inclusivity, education and artistry, and it markets its products under the tagline "Your Beauty is Brave."

The brand also points to a social commitment, citing support for the Hetrick-Martin Institute, an organisation for LGBTQ youth that was important to Aucoin.

Products

The range is makeup-focused, spanning complexion products, colour cosmetics and tools. Among the products the company lists as best sellers are The Sensual Skin Enhancer, a foundation-and-concealer hybrid; The Sculpting Contour Powder; The Volume Mascara; The Eyelash Curler; and Glass Glow Face and Body Gloss. The line is sold internationally, with distribution across North America, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia [1].

Recognition

The brand has been featured in publications including Allure, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, according to its own account [1]. Its founder's wider recognition — the 1995 CFDA Award and the commercial success of his books — remains central to how the brand presents its heritage.

Ownership

Kevyn Aucoin Beauty has changed hands twice. In 2015 it was acquired by Manzanita Capital, and in December 2021 Manzanita sold it to Harmay, a Chinese beauty retailer operating under Beijing Harmay Lexiang Technology [3]. Harmay began in 2013 as an online cosmetics seller on Taobao before opening physical stores from 2017, and runs a chain of outlets across cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Chengdu [3]. Financial terms of the 2021 sale were not disclosed [3].

Current status

The brand is active but corporately owned rather than independent: it trades through its own direct-to-consumer site and international retail distribution, while ownership has rested with Harmay since 2021 [3]. Its most recent recorded change of control was that acquisition.
