Summary

Overview

Bobbi Brown is an American prestige makeup brand founded in 1991 by makeup artist Bobbi Brown and based in New York [4]. It launched on the idea that cosmetics should look natural rather than masked, an approach the brand summarises in its tagline "Be Who You Are." Since 1995 it has been owned by The Estée Lauder Companies, which acquired it four years after its founding [3][4]; the founder left in 2016, but the brand continues to operate as an active global sub-brand of the group.

Origin & founders

The brand grew out of a makeup artist's frustration with the bold, high-contrast looks fashionable in the 1980s. Working with a chemist she met during a photo shoot, Bobbi Brown developed ten brown-toned lipsticks described as creamy, matte and odourless. She first sold them from her home by word of mouth before the line debuted at the New York department store Bergdorf Goodman in 1991 under the name Bobbi Brown Essentials [3]. According to one editorial account, a hundred lipsticks sold on the first day [4]. The following year the company introduced ten foundation sticks made for a wide range of skin tones, which it frames as the moment it "changed the face of beauty" by setting an early standard for shade diversity.

Ownership

The Estée Lauder Companies bought Bobbi Brown in 1995. Editorial sources put the price at $74.5 million [4]; Wikipedia confirms the 1995 acquisition but does not state a figure [3]. The founder stayed on with creative control of the makeup line [3]. By 2012 the brand was reported to account for roughly a tenth of Estée Lauder's total sales, and it was said to have reached $1 billion in 2016 [4]. Within the group it sits alongside sister brands including Estée Lauder, Clinique, La Mer, M·A·C Cosmetics and Jo Malone London.

In December 2016 Bobbi Brown stepped down from the company that carried her name [3]. A 25-year non-compete agreement signed with Estée Lauder kept her from launching a rival line until 2020, when she started the separate brand Jones Road [3]. That venture is a distinct company and not part of this record; Bobbi Brown Cosmetics has continued under Estée Lauder ownership.

Philosophy & positioning

The brand positions itself around natural-looking makeup and inclusive shade ranges. "We make makeup that enhances—not hides—your true beauty," its about page states, and it describes shade diversity as a standard it has held since the 1992 foundation launch. The company says its approach starts with skin and builds toward undertone-correct matching, a philosophy it traces to its founder's eye as a makeup artist. Sold mainly through department stores at a prestige price point, the line is often associated with the "no-makeup makeup" aesthetic of the 1990s.

Products & innovation

Beyond the original brown-toned lipsticks, the brand's catalogue spans makeup and a smaller skincare range. Frequently cited signature products include the Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, a waterproof gel liner, the Shimmer Brick compact used as either blush or highlighter, the Skin Foundation, and the Vitamin Enriched Face Base [5]. The Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner has been described as a long-running bestseller and was named "Top Gel" by Good Housekeeping [5].

Recognition

In a 2014 "Life's Work" interview, Harvard Business Review recounted how the founder built the line in 1991 out of dissatisfaction with red lipstick and how Estée Lauder later acquired the "natural look" brand, offering her both cash and creative control [6]. Much of the wider press attention attaches to Bobbi Brown the person rather than the brand itself.

Current status

Bobbi Brown remains an active, globally distributed prestige makeup brand operated as a sub-brand of The Estée Lauder Companies, with a current catalogue sold under the Bobbi Brown Cosmetics name [2]. Its founder has not been involved with the company since 2016.
