Summary

Overview

Aramis is an American prestige men's fragrance and grooming brand owned by The Estée Lauder Companies [3]. It was created by Estée Lauder in 1963 and brought to market in 1964 as, in the company's words, "the most elegant men's cologne in the world" [1]. Headquartered in New York City, it is widely credited as the first prestige men's fragrance sold through department stores, and it remains active today, distributed across more than 120 countries [5].

The brand takes its name from one of the musketeers in Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers. Its founding date is recorded two ways: Estée Lauder's corporate site dates the brand's creation to 1963 [1], while Wikipedia and several retail and editorial sources cite 1964 as the launch year [3]. The two figures reflect the gap between when the fragrance was conceived and when it reached the counter rather than a genuine dispute.

Origin and founders

Aramis was conceived by Estée Lauder, the founder of the cosmetics company that bears her name, as a men's counterpart to her existing range [1]. The original eau de toilette was composed by perfumer Bernard Chant of International Flavors and Fragrances. Its commercial idea was novel for its time: rather than treat men's scent as a drugstore afterthought, Aramis positioned itself as a prestige product and secured space in department stores, debuting in New York and reaching Harrods in London in 1965 [5]. According to the company, the launch was backed by a deliberate plan of around twenty products spanning fragrance and grooming, an early attempt to build out a full men's category.

History and milestones

Chant returned to the line through the 1970s, composing Aramis 900 in 1973 and Devin in 1978. The 1980s and beyond brought further extensions, including Aramis Tuscany for Men in 1984. The brand moved beyond men's scent with New West for Him in 1988 and, two years later, New West for Her, its first women's fragrance. In 2006 it released its first dual fragrance collection, Aramis Always, promoted by the tennis players Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf, and in 2009 it repackaged and relaunched several of its legacy scents [3].

In 2025 the brand introduced Intuition by Aramis, a woody, green fragrance launched globally with the former basketball player Dwyane Wade as its first global brand ambassador, supported by a campaign across television, print, digital, in-store and outdoor advertising [4].

Ownership

Aramis operates as a subsidiary of The Estée Lauder Companies, the New York–based group whose portfolio also includes Estée Lauder, Clinique, La Mer, M·A·C Cosmetics, Jo Malone London, Bobbi Brown and Aveda, among others [3]. The brand has a named global brand president, Justin Boxford.

Philosophy and positioning

The brand's positioning has stayed anchored to its original brief. Estée Lauder describes Aramis as "refined and distinctive, with a classic masculinity and sophistication that would transcend time." For the 2025 Intuition launch, the company framed a contemporary reading of that idea as "a new kind of masculinity — EQ as well as IQ; sensitivity as well as strength; purpose as well as power" [4]. Throughout, it has sat in the prestige tier and relied on department-store distribution rather than mass-market channels.

Products and innovation

The signature product is the original Aramis eau de toilette, a leather chypre — a style built on mossy, woody, leather-tinged accords — that pairs top notes such as bergamot, artemisia and thyme with a heart of patchouli, jasmine and sage over a base of oakmoss, leather, sandalwood and amber. The original aftershave remains in the range alongside the eau de toilette, a shaving soap and a body wash [3]. Later releases, many also by Bernard Chant, extended the house into adjacent styles, from the 1973 Aramis 900 to a series of newer reinterpretations.

Recognition

The original fragrance has drawn favourable critical attention. Perfumer and fragrance historian Roja Dove described it as "an incredibly refined and distinctive fragrance" that is "as much of a legend as the hero it was named after," and critics have compared it to Chanel No. 5, calling it "No. 5 for Men" [3]. The men's grooming site Bespoke Unit characterised it as a rare leather chypre, evoking "an aristocrat's old drawing room," and noted its lasting association with 1970s disco culture [5].

Current status

Aramis is active. It is wholly owned and marketed by The Estée Lauder Companies, sold in more than 120 countries, and its most recent major activity was the global launch of Intuition by Aramis in August 2025 [4].
