Summary

Overview

M·A·C Cosmetics is a Canadian colour-cosmetics brand founded in Toronto in 1984 by makeup artist and photographer Frank Toskan and salon owner Frank Angelo [2]. Its name is an acronym for Make-Up Art Cosmetics, and the company built its reputation on professional-grade makeup designed to read well on camera and across a wide range of skin tones. Since 1994 it has been owned by The Estée Lauder Companies, which completed a full acquisition in 1998 [2]; the brand remains active worldwide, with products sold in over 120 countries according to the company.

Most sources date the founding to March 1984, and the brand site itself uses the line "Since 1984." One lower-tier summary gives 1985 [7], but the brand site, Wikipedia and editorial accounts agree on 1984 [2].

Origin & founders

Toskan and Angelo were frustrated by the lack of makeup that photographed well, so they began making their own — mixing the first products in their kitchen and selling them straight from Angelo's salon to fellow makeup artists, models and photographers. According to one editorial account, the very first product was a pigmented lipstick shade said to be inspired by a pink Crayola crayon. From the start the line was pitched as unisex and built around bold, highly pigmented colour rather than a natural or skincare-led aesthetic, distinguished early on by stark black packaging that set it apart from the industry norms of the era.

History & milestones

The brand's first major break came through celebrity association. Madonna wore M·A·C lipstick in a late-1980s campaign and then carried a shade the founders formulated for her — later known as Russian Red — through her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, generating wide recognition and demand. M·A·C opened its first United States store in 1991, on Gay Street in New York City. In 1994, to mark its tenth anniversary, the company launched Viva Glam, a lipstick whose proceeds fund HIV/AIDS work, with the drag performer RuPaul as its first ambassador.

Later milestones include the 2012 M·A·C Selena collection, built around the singer Selena Quintanilla, which Wikipedia describes as the best-selling celebrity collection in cosmetics history [2]. The brand expanded its retail reach during the 2010s, becoming available through Ulta Beauty in 2017 and Sephora Canada in 2018.

Ownership

The Estée Lauder Companies acquired a 51% stake in M·A·C in 1994, with the founders initially retaining creative control, and completed full ownership in 1998 [2]. The transition followed the death of co-founder Frank Angelo in 1997. M·A·C now sits within Estée Lauder's portfolio alongside brands such as Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Smashbox, Too Faced and Jo Malone London.

Sources disagree on where the brand is now headquartered. The Wikipedia infobox lists London, Ontario, Canada, while the article body and a business strategy study both state that the headquarters moved to New York City after the 1998 integration into Estée Lauder [2][5]. The New York location is generally treated as the operating headquarters, with the Ontario entry likely reflecting a legacy or corporate registration.

Philosophy & positioning

M·A·C describes itself as a colour and artistry authority "with artistry at our roots, inclusion and diversity at our core," and frames its mission around the line "All Ages, All Races, All Genders." The company emphasises that its stores are run by professional makeup artists and that its products are used in film and fashion work. Editorial writing on the brand has characterised its early appeal as that of a non-judgmental guide that encouraged customers to experiment freely.

Products & innovation

The brand's best-known products are concentrated in lip colour and complexion. Wikipedia identifies Studio Fix Fluid foundation and the Retro Matte lipstick Ruby Woo as its most popular items. Ruby Woo, a vivid blue-red matte, and the nude shade Velvet Teddy are both described in editorial coverage as cult-favourite, best-selling lipsticks [4]. Other shades carry their own history: the Spice lip pencil became a sought-after item after supermodel Linda Evangelista mentioned it, reportedly selling out immediately.

On sustainability, M·A·C runs the "Back to MAC" recycling programme, which lets customers return six empty containers in exchange for a free lipstick. The brand has described itself since launch as cruelty-free and socially responsible [2], and reports that its lipsticks are made in Canada.

Recognition

M·A·C is closely tied to the supermodel era of the late 1980s and 1990s and to professional artistry. Beyond Madonna, the brand's history features figures such as Linda Evangelista, who helped popularise its lip pencils, and RuPaul, whose Viva Glam lipstick was the first product the company ever advertised. The Viva Glam initiative has raised a large cumulative sum for HIV/AIDS causes: Wikipedia records over $400 million, while editorial sources cite figures of $480–520 million [2][4], a total that has grown over time as the line continues.

Controversies

In 2010, a planned M·A·C collaboration with the fashion label Rodarte drew criticism for product names and imagery that referenced the violence around Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The company pulled the collection before it was distributed and established a charity that it says raised over $3 million within two years [2].

Current status

M·A·C remains an active global brand, but it is not independent: it has been wholly owned by The Estée Lauder Companies since 1998 [2]. Its products are sold in more than 120 countries through a mix of standalone stores and third-party retailers, and it continues to launch new collections. Its most recent recorded activity includes a 2024 relaunch tied to the thirtieth anniversary of Viva Glam [6].
