Overview
Kjaer Weis is a Danish-rooted color cosmetics and skincare brand founded in 2010 by Kirsten Kjaer Weis, a Danish-born, New York-based makeup artist who gave the company her own name. It launched simultaneously in Denmark and the United States and positioned itself as a certified-organic makeup line built to the performance standards of luxury cosmetics, with a refillable packaging system as its central idea [6]. The brand remains active; its e-commerce site carries a full product range and the founder gave a published interview as recently as December 2023 [7].
Since 2021 the company has been majority-owned by Waldencast, though Kirsten Kjaer Weis stayed on as its second-largest stakeholder and continues to lead product development and creative direction [5].
Origin and founders
Kirsten Kjaer Weis worked for around two decades as a makeup artist before starting the brand, with credits that included editorial work for publications such as Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire. According to Scandinavia Standard, she grew frustrated with conventional cosmetics that she found caused rashes and skin reactions, and set out "to find a way to produce make-up without harsh additives." She has described growing up on a farm in Denmark with a strong attachment to nature, an influence the company links to its later emphasis on organic materials [7].
The product line did not appear quickly. The brand reports an eight-year research and development period before its 2010 launch, aimed at matching the texture and color payoff of high-end makeup using natural and organic ingredients [6]. For the visual identity, the company worked with creative director Marc Atlan, who developed its red-lacquer boxes and metal compacts marked with a white enamel "KW" monogram.
The exact founding date carries a minor discrepancy in the sources. The brand's own sustainability page and the Scandinavia Standard interview both state a 2010 launch [6], and Glowpedia records 2010 as the founding year. A 2021 BeautyMatter report instead framed the company as the product of "10 years of building," which loosely implies a date closer to 2011 [5]; the explicit, corroborated 2010 launch is treated here as authoritative.
The brand's national identity is likewise split between two places. Its origin and heritage are Danish — a Danish founder, a Danish launch and a Scandinavian design sensibility — while its operational headquarters is in New York City [5]. The company itself describes drawing on both "the minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic and the fierce spirit of New York City."
Ownership
In June 2021, Waldencast Ventures announced it had taken a majority stake in Kjaer Weis, following an initial investment made in March 2020 [5]. The deal value and the precise size of the stake were not disclosed. As part of the change, Gillian Gorman Round was appointed chief executive, while the founder remained the second-largest stakeholder with continued oversight of product and creative work. At the time of the deal, Waldencast's then-CEO Michel Brousset stated an ambition to build Kjaer Weis into "one of the major luxury beauty brands in the world," and BeautyMatter reported sales up 200 percent year over year.
Philosophy and positioning
Kjaer Weis positions itself at the intersection of luxury makeup and certified-organic, low-waste formulation. The company frames this combination under the tagline "Luxury That Cares" and describes a refillable system meant to deliver "less waste, more beauty" by letting customers slip a fresh formula into a reusable compact rather than discarding the case. According to the brand, its formulas are free of parabens, silicones, petrochemical emulsifiers and synthetic fragrances [4]. The line is associated with the clean-beauty and slow-beauty movements that gained ground over the 2010s.
Products and innovation
The makeup range spans complexion, cheek, eye and lip products alongside a smaller skincare offering. Among its most frequently cited items are the Cream Blush — described by the company as an award-winning signature product — the Im-Possible Mascara, the Invisible Touch Liquid Foundation, The Beautiful Eye Balm and a facial oil. The brand identifies its hero ingredient as "The Root of Light" (Dioscorea Batatas), which it says helps produce a "lit-from-within glow."
Production is based in Italy, where the company states almost everything in the line is certified organic to the standards of the Italian body CCPB (Controllo e Certificazione Prodotti Biologici); its sustainability page also references COSMOS certification [4][3]. By the brand's own definition, certification requires that at least 95 percent of agriculturally derived ingredients come from organic farming, with a minimum proportion of organic content in each finished formula.
Sustainability
Refillable packaging is the brand's defining sustainability claim and, by its own account, its founding premise: the company describes itself as the first luxury beauty brand to introduce refillable packaging when it launched in 2010 [3]. It markets its compacts and cases as designed to be reused indefinitely, with formulas sold as inserts. The company says its products and packaging are "100% recyclable, compostable and refillable," using FSC-certified materials printed with water-based ink, and that it moved to fully recyclable shipping boxes in January 2022 [3]. Its certified-organic formulas are also described as cruelty-free and gluten-free.
Current status
Kjaer Weis is an actively trading brand. Its online store carries a current product range, and the founder appeared in a December 2023 interview discussing the company's organic-makeup philosophy and its products [7]. While Waldencast holds a majority stake, the company continues to operate as a standalone brand with its founder still leading product and creative direction.
