Summary

Overview

Lengling, styled Maison LENGLING and also presented as LENGLING MUNICH, is an independent perfume house based in Munich, Germany. It was founded in 2014 by the married couple Christian and Ursula Lengling [1]. The house produces niche fragrances alongside a smaller body-care line, and positions itself in the luxury artistic-perfumery segment. It remains active, with an online shop serving the EU and Switzerland, a Munich boutique, and current collections.

The brand is known for a dual-fragrance idea it calls LENG and LING: each scent is built around two contrasting notes that the company says interplay harmoniously, one strong and one soft, in the manner of yin and yang [2]. According to Lengling, the name itself splits along these two halves and derives from the founders' family surname [2]. A separate account, from the fragrance publication Essencional, traces the name instead to Lenglingen, described as a village in southern Germany [3]; the two explanations have not been reconciled.

Origin and founders

Before launching their own label, Christian and Ursula Lengling ran a business selling high-end fragrances internationally. They drew on that experience to start the Munich house in 2014, an effort the publication CaFleureBon characterised as combining Ursula's creativity with Christian's commercial background [4]. Within the studio, the company describes a division of roles: Ursula begins each composition by isolating herself to capture a particular emotion or memory and translate it into scent, with Christian joining during refinement. The brand says a single perfume can take two to three years to reach mutual approval [3].

Philosophy and positioning

Lengling describes its goal as creating not merely fine fragrances but "authentic works of art of the highest quality," and uses the tagline "Masterpieces of Modern Perfume Art." The house frames its work around emotion, stating that its aim is to capture personal feelings and "eternalize them in authentic perfumes." Its compositions are concentrated parfum extraits, which CaFleureBon noted wear close to the skin owing to their high oil concentration [4]. Editorial coverage places the brand's audience among quality-focused perfume enthusiasts with an interest in culture, art and design.

A recurring design detail is the metal bottle cap, which the brand calls the Isarkiesel and describes as a hand-polished replica of a pebble from Munich's Isar river.

Products and innovation

The fragrance range is organised by number and unusual names, including el pasajero No 1, à la carte No 6, sekushi No 7 and wunderwind No 9. Each is constructed on the LENG-and-LING principle of paired opposing notes. Alongside the perfumes, the company sells a body-care line called Namui, which it markets as vegan and free from microplastics, silicones, parabens, mineral oils, artificial colours and PEGs. Lengling states that all of its formulations are 100% vegan [2].

The house emphasises local production, describing its goods as "Made in Bavaria" with manufacturing in the Munich area, and says it works preferentially with regional suppliers and operates a climate-neutral office building [2].

Recognition

In 2018, Lengling's perfume wunderwind won the German Duftstars award in the artistic independent-perfume category [3]. In 2022, its Namui body cream received the Swiss Prix de Beauté [2]. The house has also been profiled by niche fragrance media, including CaFleureBon, Essencional, and a Fragrantica news feature on its contrast-driven releases.

Lengling is an active, independently run perfume house. It opened its first flagship boutique in central Munich, at Frauenplatz 10 near the cathedral, in summer 2021 [4]. Its most recent documented award dates to 2022.
