Overview
Malin+Goetz is an American skincare, body and fragrance brand founded in 2004 in the Chelsea neighbourhood of New York City by Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz [1]. The two had collaborated for over a decade before launching the company, which set out to "uncomplicate skincare" with a small range of products designed to work across every skin type, tone and gender. Since 2015 the brand has been owned by the London private-equity firm Manzanita Capital, while both founders have continued to run it [7].
The company built its identity around a gender-neutral, design-led apothecary aesthetic and a "less, but better" philosophy. By its twentieth anniversary in 2024 it reported sales in 44 countries and partnerships with more than 1,200 hotels and amenity providers worldwide [9].
Origin and founders
Before starting the brand, Matthew Malin worked as a beauty buyer at the luxury department store Barneys New York and later at the skincare company Kiehl's, while Andrew Goetz came from a design background, having worked in furniture production at the Swiss manufacturer Vitra [5]. Malin, who dealt with eczema, rosacea and fragrance allergies, wanted to strip skincare back to fewer, simpler and more tolerable products.
According to a 2024 interview with the founders in WWD, the pair launched Malin+Goetz in 2004 with $150,000 of personal savings and a single store, opening at a time when, as Goetz put it, "we were the only ones doing gender-neutral products" [9]. The brand frames the launch as the founding year, citing its first store and product sales. The Japanese Wikipedia entry — the only Wikipedia article on the company — adds that the venture was planned in October 2002, with the first store opening in Chelsea in February 2004 [5].
Ownership
Malin+Goetz was acquired by Manzanita Capital in a 2015 buyout [7]. Manzanita is a London-based private-equity firm that specialises in premium beauty, and its portfolio has included brands such as Diptyque and D.S. & Durga [6]. The firm's portfolio page describes Malin+Goetz as combining "trusted natural ingredients with advanced technology to create uncomplicated premium skincare and fragrance for the modern, design-conscious individual." Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz have remained with the company, speaking as its principals in press coverage well after the acquisition.
Philosophy and positioning
The brand positions itself around the idea of doing less, but doing it well. It describes a "2-step essential" routine — cleanse and hydrate, applied to face, body and hair — and says its products are built to "deliver more benefits with fewer steps." Its stated tagline is "skincare you trust + scents you love," and the company says all of its products are "cruelty-free and designed for every skin type, tone + gender."
This gender-neutral framing is central to how the company tells its own story. Goetz has described the original goal as putting "women and men on equal footing with the quality of products that we created," and trade and grooming press have framed the brand as an early pioneer of gender-neutral grooming in the 2000s [8].
Products and innovation
The range spans skincare for face, body and hair, alongside a scent line of fragrances, perfume oils and candles. Two of the products it launched with — a grapefruit face cleanser and a vitamin E moisturiser — remain its best-sellers two decades on, according to WWD [9]. A natural eucalyptus deodorant has, in the description of InsideHook, "achieved a cult-like status" [8]. Grapefruit, vitamin E and eucalyptus recur as signature ingredients across these products.
The company sells through its own apothecary-style stores in the United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, as well as through wider retail and wholesale channels and hotel partnerships. Reported figures vary by source and date: WWD cited 18 freestanding stores in 2024, while InsideHook referred to 25 standalone apothecaries worldwide; both placed the brand in 44 countries [9][8].
Sustainability
Malin+Goetz says sustainability has been "embedded in our dna since our launch in 2004," summarising its approach as "honest ingredients, efficient formulas, minimal packaging." Most manufacturing takes place within a 90-mile radius of New York City, which the company links to limiting its carbon footprint. On packaging, it points to FSC-certified cartons, shipping boxes certified by the SFI with recycled content, a shift toward aluminium and post-consumer recycled plastic, and refillable gallon options it markets as equivalent to fifteen refills.
Current status
The brand remains active and founder-led, operating under Manzanita Capital's ownership since 2015 [7]. It marked its twentieth anniversary in 2024, and its most recent visible activity that year included the launch of two new eucalyptus body products; industry sources cited by WWD placed its global revenue at around $50 million [9].
