Summary

Overview

Mariah Carey is a celebrity fragrance line built around the American singer of the same name, rather than a standalone perfume house. The fragrances were developed, marketed and distributed by Elizabeth Arden, Inc. under an exclusive global licence, with the debut scent reaching prestige department stores in 2007. The line has been dormant since 2011: its launch cadence ran from 2007 through the Lollipop series, and no new Mariah Carey fragrance has been documented since [4]. Older scents remain in circulation, largely through discount and outlet retailers.

Carey was born on 27 March 1969 in Huntington, New York [5], and is known chiefly as a recording artist. The fragrance line sits within her wider business ventures and was conceived, in her own words, as "a gift to my fans".

Origin and founders

The arrangement began with a licensing deal rather than a launch. In April 2006, Carey signed an exclusive global agreement with Elizabeth Arden covering fragrance development, marketing and distribution, with the first product slated for spring 2007 [2]. The first scent, "M", then reached the market in 2007. Sources accordingly differ on which year marks the line's start: the 2006 trade announcement records the signing of the deal [2], while retailer copy dates the brand to the 2007 launch of "M" [4]; the 2006 agreement is best read as the inception and 2007 as the first fragrance on sale.

Elizabeth Arden framed the partnership in star terms. Chairman and chief executive E. Scott Beattie called Carey "a star of incredible magnitude" and said the company looked forward to "launching an inspiring new global fragrance brand" [2]. The move followed Arden's existing celebrity portfolio with Britney Spears, whose scents Curious and Fantasy had sold strongly.

History and milestones

The debut fragrance, "M by Mariah Carey", rolled out in mid-September 2007. Two further scents followed in 2008, Luscious Pink and Forever. In August 2010 the line expanded with the Lollipop Bling series — Honey, Ribbon and Mine Again — and in July 2011 with the Lollipop Splash: The Remix series and Lollipop Bling: That Chick [4]. A recurring butterfly motif ran across the packaging, and fragrance databases list roughly fourteen scents in total under the name.

Ownership

The line was operated as a licensed brand rather than an independent company. Elizabeth Arden, Inc. served as the licensee and manufacturer, holding responsibility for production, marketing and distribution under the 2006 agreement [2]. No acquisition history is recorded for the line itself.

Philosophy and positioning

The fragrances were positioned as an extension of Carey's personal taste rather than a science-led range. She described "M" as drawing on "multiple places I've been, moments in my life and childhood memories", combining her favourite scents, and said she wanted the fragrance "to be a gift to my fans" [3]. According to the launch materials, Carey was to be "personally involved" in product development, packaging and marketing [2]. The line was sold at the prestige tier through department stores.

Products and innovation

"M" was created by Carey with perfumers Carlos Benaïm and Loc Dong of IFF [3]. The composition opens on a creamy marshmallow accord and marine notes, moves through a Tiare flower and gardenia heart, and dries down on Moroccan incense, amber and patchouli. The bottle, designed by Elizabeth Arden design director Jean Antretter, used a lilac flacon topped with a butterfly-shaped glass cap. Later releases — Luscious Pink, Forever and the Lollipop ranges — continued the same butterfly theme.

Recognition

"M" was noted in the September 2007 issue of Elle, which placed it on the magazine's "It List" [6].

Current status

The line is dormant. Its documented launch activity spans 2007 to 2011, ending with the July 2011 releases, and no new Mariah Carey fragrance has appeared since [4]. The back catalogue continues to be sold, often through discount and outlet channels, which leaves the line dormant rather than discontinued. The official artist website carries no fragrance content, presenting Carey solely as a recording artist [1].
