Overview
Marinella, trading as E. Marinella, is an Italian accessories house founded in Naples in 1914 by Eugenio Marinella [1][3]. It began as a small shop of about 20 square metres on the Riviera di Chiaia seafront and built its name on bespoke shirts and, later, handmade silk neckties. The family firm remains active in 2026, with a transactional website and boutiques in several cities, and is still run by the founding family, currently Maurizio Marinella and Alessandro Marinella [3]. Alongside the accessories business sits a separate fragrance line marketed under the Marinella name.
The house frames its origins around an idea the company describes as recreating "a little corner of England in Naples" — a phrase it attributes to the writer Matilde Serao. In practice that meant importing British fabrics and goods and applying them to a distinctly Neapolitan style of tailoring that the company calls a tradition of sartorial craftsmanship.

Origin & founders
Eugenio Marinella opened the original shop in 1914 on one of the city's principal seafronts, then a promenade for Neapolitan society [1]. According to the company, Marinella was among the first in the city to travel to England to import fine materials, including hand-printed silk, and to stock British goods of the period such as Aquascutum raincoats, Floris and Penhaligon's perfumes, and Lock & Co hats. In its early years the firm was known above all for starched, made-to-measure shirts, much in demand for formalwear.
Around 1940 the founder established two tailoring workshops, one for bespoke shirts and one for bespoke ties. The tie gradually became the product most associated with the name, hand-finished in the workshops in Naples where, the company says, the silk is printed exclusively for the house and given an additional washing treatment to soften its finish.
History & milestones
From the post-war decades onward, the Marinella tie spread through Italian public life. The company recounts that Enrico de Nicola, the first President of the Italian Republic, would present heads of state with a box of five ties from the Naples house, and that the tie later became a recurring choice among occupants of the White House and the Élysée Palace. Wikipedia adds that in the 1980s international expansion accelerated when President Francesco Cossiga distributed Marinella ties as diplomatic gifts [3].
Having been rooted almost entirely in Naples for most of its history, the firm began opening stores abroad from 2002, adding locations in Milan, Rome, Turin, London and Tokyo to the original boutique. A women's line followed in 2010, beginning with a silk scarf printed with Neapolitan scenes and later extending to leather goods. In 2017 the firm's ties were included in the Museum of Modern Art exhibition "ITEMS: Is Fashion Modern?" in New York, which gathered 111 garments and accessories of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries [3].
Ownership
Marinella is a privately held, family-run company headquartered in Naples, with current leadership recorded as Maurizio Marinella, a grandson of the founder, and Alessandro Marinella [3]. The company presents the succession of "Eugenio, Luigi, Maurizio and Alessandro" as a continuous family line, and no acquisition or outside ownership is recorded in the available sources.
The fragrance line is a distinct matter. Third-party fragrance databases describe the perfumes as a venture begun in 1997 by the Scalella family, arising from an arrangement with Maurizio Marinella, rather than as a product of the accessories house itself [4]. Some retailer copy instead presents the fragrances simply as a Marinella house line tracing to the 1914 founding [5]. The two accounts agree that the accessories Maison dates to 1914; they differ on the origin of the perfumes, which the more detailed sources treat as a separate, licensed venture.
Philosophy & positioning
The house positions itself around made-to-measure craft and Neapolitan heritage. Since 1914, the company says, each customer "receives a unique product, tailored to measure," reflecting what it calls a commitment to sartorial excellence. Its stated values centre on craftsmanship, bespoke production and a sense of place tied to Naples, and it uses the tagline "Over a century of style."
The fragrance line is framed in similar terms. Retailer material quotes the perfume collection as "the natural evolution of this tradition," made with "only the best ingredients and following the highest standards of quality," with scents said to be inspired by the aromas of the Gulf of Naples. The brand is described by retailers as positioned at the luxury end of the market [5].
Products & innovation
Silk neckties remain the core of the accessories business, sold in multiple fold constructions and grouped into collections that include an archive line drawing on historic designs. Around these sit shirts, silk accessories such as bow ties and pocket squares, leather goods, and a women's range of scarves and bags. The ties and other silk pieces are handmade in the workshops in Naples.
The separate Marinella fragrance range is documented mainly through third-party fragrance databases and retailers rather than the brand's own site, which carries no perfume section. These sources list eau de toilette releases including .287 — named, per the brand site's boutique address, after the historic store at Riviera di Chiaia 287 — alongside Costa Nera, Capodimonte, Posillipo and the tobacco-and-rum Tabacco Imperiale. Fragrantica records the line as comprising eighteen perfumes with the perfumer Céline Ellena credited on the fragrances [4].
Recognition
The principal documented recognition is the 2017 inclusion of E. Marinella ties in the Museum of Modern Art's "ITEMS: Is Fashion Modern?" exhibition, which ran from October 2017 to January 2018 [3]. Beyond institutional recognition, the house is associated with a long list of public figures said to have worn its ties, among them King Charles III — who, the company says, wears a tie from its 1948 archive collection, chosen by Camilla during a 2017 visit to the Naples store — as well as several United States presidents, King Juan Carlos and Aristotle Onassis [1].
Current status
Marinella is active. As of 2026 it operates a transactional e-commerce site and boutiques in cities including Naples, Milan, Rome, Turin, Capri, Rapallo, London and Tokyo, and remains under family control [3]. The fragrance line, run separately, shows fewer recent releases than the accessories business, with its catalogue documented across roughly 1997 to 2019 [4].
