Overview
Masque Milano is an independent Italian niche perfume house based in Pioltello, on the outskirts of Milan. It was founded on 1 April 2010 by Alessandro Brun and Riccardo Tedeschi, two friends who built the company around an unusual organising idea: each fragrance is conceived as an act or scene in an opera, with a different guest perfumer brought in to interpret the role [1]. The house presents itself as a "fragrance art company rooted in Italian excellence," aimed at wearers seeking, in its words, a deep olfactive experience through vivid, photorealistic scents.
The brand remains active. Its catalogue has grown across several lines, and recent releases such as White Whale, which concludes its long-running Opera collection, point to an ongoing rather than dormant operation.
Origin and founders
The company traces its beginning to two collaborators with shared interests in travel, music, design and handcraft. According to its own account, the pair spent years researching scents and essences in Grasse, the historic centre of French perfumery, and among artisans across Italy before establishing the house in 2010 [1]. The brand describes the founders as having taught themselves to "orchestrate" a group of master perfumers and craftsmen, much as musical directors would, and to set their personal memories down as a collection of "scenes."
Alessandro Brun, born and raised in Milan, became an academic at the Politecnico di Milano, where the editorial site CaFleureBon reports he holds a PhD in management engineering and works as an associate professor, with research focused on luxury-goods management and collaborations with companies including Lamborghini, Gucci and Cartier [5]. Riccardo Tedeschi, born in Assisi, studied classical guitar at the Conservatory of Perugia and earned a degree in electronic engineering before completing an MBA at the Politecnico di Milano's business school; CaFleureBon notes he later worked as a consultant for LVMH's perfume and cosmetics division and first encountered the perfume world through the brand MOR Cosmetics [5].
History and milestones
The house dates its founding to 1 April 2010 [1]. Some third-party references give a later start year of 2012; the perfume database Fragrantica lists that date [7], which corresponds to the launch of the first fragrance rather than the company's formation. The brand's own public debut came in 2013, the year it records that "Masque Fragranze is born" and presented its opera-collection concept [1]. The earlier name Masque Fragranze was later set aside in favour of Masque Milano.
From the outset the line was planned as a long-form narrative. In an early interview, the founders described an intended total of roughly sixteen to twenty fragrances, expected to take several more years to complete [5]. That arc ran through the 2010s and into the 2020s; a 2021 interview with Brun by the critic Persolaise coincided with the release of Lost Alice, composed by Mackenzie Reilly [6].
Philosophy and positioning
Masque Milano frames its work as storytelling through scent. The company says it sets out to "incept" memories of places and personal tales and bottle them as singular fragrances, describing the result as an emotional, cinematic journey for the wearer. Its stated values centre on artistry, storytelling and what it calls a relentless pursuit of perfection, alongside Italian craftsmanship.
The defining structural conceit is the opera. Rather than house a single in-house perfumer, the brand commissions independent "noses" to interpret individual acts and scenes, comparing the process to film directors casting a role. The roster has included perfumers such as Julien Rasquinet, Luca Maffei, Delphine Thierry, Cécile Zarokian and Caroline Dumur, among others, each credited by name. A separate Le Donne collection is, per the brand, created exclusively by female perfumers.
The house positions itself at the luxury end of the market and distributes through selected stockists rather than mass retail. Its products are sold as eau and extrait de parfum with a high concentration of essential oils, presented in heavy bottles and handmade cases; the company says they are produced by traditional Italian craftspeople.
Products and innovation
Masque Milano's output is organised into collections, chiefly the Opera collection together with Le Donne, Ruby and Emerald lines and a Discovery set. Recurring materials across the range include oud, vetiver, iris, narcissus, magnolia absolute, ambergris, myrrh and incense.
Several releases are tied to specific narrative scenes. Russian Tea, by Julien Rasquinet, is built around the image of a Russian samovar and renders strong black tea through woody and leathery notes softened with mint, raspberry and cinnamon. L'Attesa, by Luca Maffei, uses Italian iris as the expression of "the wait." Montecristo and Terralba, both by Delphine Thierry, evoke leather, rum and tobacco in one case and a weightless Mediterranean trek in the other. Tango, by Cécile Zarokian, was conceived as a warm, sensual composition. The brand also notes that for Kintsugi it pushed magnolia absolute to an unusually high concentration at the perfumer's urging.
Recognition and press
Coverage of the house has appeared in specialist perfumery media. CaFleureBon profiled the founders and their opera concept, and the critic Persolaise published an interview with Brun in April 2021 [6]. No industry awards are recorded in the available sources.
Current status
The brand is active. Its website carries a 2026 copyright and lists multiple current collections, including recent additions such as Ribot in the Ruby line and White Whale as the closing chapter of the Opera collection. The company is independently owned; no parent company is identified in the available sources, and no acquisitions are recorded.
