Summary

Overview

Maystar is a Spanish professional-cosmetics brand founded in 1984 by Jesús Bonan Solé, who began making depilatory waxes and cosmetics by hand in the garage of his home in Torredembarra [2]. Today positioned as a skincare-led line of "healthy cosmetics," it is the founding brand of the family-owned Maystar Group and remains active, having marked its 40th anniversary in January 2024.

The company name carries an origin story that the founder's son, now its chief executive, recounted on that anniversary. The night the business began, 22 January, the sky was clear and very starry — "more of May than January," he wrote — and the founder read it as a good omen [6]. From "May" and "star" came Maystar.

Origin and founders

Jesús Bonan Solé started the company artisanally, making depilatory waxes and cosmetic products in his garage in 1984 [2]. According to the brand, the early years smelled of waxes and creams and rang with the noise of the first machines being tested. From that beginning in waxing, Maystar gradually built out its skincare and body-care ranges, and the group came to describe its work as creating beauty and well-being rather than only cosmetics.

The brand gives its founding date as 1984, and independent sources concur [8]. Its own about pages, however, also describe the company as having "more than 140 years of experience" [7]. The two figures do not contradict each other over the brand's age: the longer span refers to the combined experience of the wider Maystar Group, which includes the hair-care house Eva Professional, founded in 1922 [8] — not the age of the Maystar brand, which dates to 1984.

History and milestones

The brand's defining technical milestone came in 1991, when the founder invented and patented a roll-on applicator system for waxing; the company describes the format as having transformed the global wax-depilation market [7]. Waxing remained the group's core category as it expanded into skincare and into single-use salon supplies such as caps, robes and disposable underwear.

In January 2024 the group marked its 40th anniversary with a message from chief executive Dennis Bonan, the son of the founder [6]. He described Maystar as a family business that had grown from the original garage into a wider company, said it continued to lead the hair-removal market while expanding in skincare, and pointed to the group's professional-training work through its Maystar Heritage Foundation. The same message framed the company's aim less as making products than as making salon treatments "a pleasure and one of the best moments of the day."

Ownership

Maystar is owned by the Maystar Group, a family-owned Spanish company led by Dennis Bonan as chief executive [6]. Within the group, Maystar is the skincare brand, alongside sister brands that include Eva Professional for hair care — which the company calls Spain's longest-running hairdressing company, founded in 1922 [8] — and the waxing lines sold under the Starpil and Depilflax names. A third-party industry feature reported the group as present in 102 countries, with manufacturing on more than one continent [8]; the brand's own materials place its laboratory in Torredembarra, Spain.

Philosophy and positioning

Maystar frames its philosophy as "Vital Beauty," which it describes as bringing out the best in the client and balancing body, mind and soul. The company presents itself as a specialist in "healthy cosmetics" offered, in its words, at "honest prices," and uses the tagline "Youth is ephemeral, beauty is eternal." Its broader positioning, the brand says, is to be the beauty partner of the professional esthetician and to break stereotypes around beauty across all ages and stages of life.

The commercial model is professional: Maystar supplies estheticians and salons for in-cabin treatments, training salon staff and equipping treatment rooms, and complements this with "At Home" retail lines so clients can continue their treatments between salon visits. It says it has specialised in cosmetics for esthetics professionals for more than forty years — a span consistent with the 1984 founding.

Products and innovation

The range centres on facial and body care — creams, serums, masks, eye-contour products, exfoliants, toners, sunscreens and anti-cellulite treatments — organised into themed collections. Among the lines a professional-cosmetics retailer singles out are Biorelax Synergy Lift, Hydrovect O2 and Cellular Expression Vitamin C [9]; the brand's own collections also include Caviar Therapy, StarSun, Whitening Care and Sensitive, spanning normal, dry, combination, oily and reactive skin. Maystar says it formulates its products at a laboratory in Torredembarra and in partnership with the Universidad Rovira i Virgili, consulting cosmetologists, dermatologists and estheticians, and it displays ISO 22716 cosmetics good-manufacturing-practice certification on its site.

Sustainability

The company runs a sustainability programme it calls "Créenos." It describes commitments to reducing plastic, improving energy efficiency, optimising the materials used in manufacturing and the transport of goods, and avoiding restricted substances in its products and processes. It also says it allocates 5% of its profits to recycling resources for plastic, packaging, cardboard and paper. On its product claims, the brand states that its formulas are paraben-free and free of toxic substances, that it does not test on animals, and that its packaging is fully recyclable.

Current status

Maystar is an active brand. Its most recent clearly dated public activity is the 40th-anniversary message of 22 January 2024, and it continues to trade through its webshop with current product lines.
