Overview
Medipharma Cosmetics is a German skincare brand sold mainly through pharmacies. It belongs to Dr. Theiss Naturwaren GmbH, a manufacturer of natural-remedy and personal-care products based in Homburg in the Saarland region [2]. The brand, which styles its own name in lower case as "medipharma cosmetics", has been part of the Dr. Theiss group since 2002 [8].
Its best-known product line is built around cold-pressed olive oil, and the range has since grown to cover facial care, body care, hair care, make-up, sun care and men's grooming. The company describes it as pharmacy cosmetics ("Apothekenkosmetik") that pairs established plant ingredients with modern active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.
Origin & founders
The brand's history before 2002 is only partly documented, and the two available accounts frame that year differently. The parent company's own timeline presents 2002 as a launch: in that year, it says, the medipharma cosmetics olive oil care series was introduced in German pharmacies [7]. German Wikipedia's article on Dr. Theiss Naturwaren instead describes 2002 as the year Theiss took over an existing company called Medipharma Cosmetics [8], which implies the business already existed before then.
Both accounts agree that the brand's current history under Dr. Theiss begins in 2002. When the original Medipharma Cosmetics company was founded, and by whom, is not documented. The founders of the parent company are not the founders of the brand.
History & milestones
The olive oil series was the starting point. According to the brand, the range has been on the market for more than 20 years and has become well established.
The next documented expansion came in 2015, when the parent company widened the portfolio with a new Hyaluron series and a Booster series. Two years later, in 2017, it introduced the Wimpern Booster, a lash booster, together with the Mascara med eye make-up line, which the company presented as a way of strengthening its expertise in that area.
By 2018 the parent's timeline reported that the medipharma cosmetics brand was growing at an above-average rate [7]. The company has kept adding products since. In 2026 the brand's website listed several items as new, including an olive oil and collagen eye cream, an olive oil and collagen hydro cream-gel, and a coral-tinted lip oil with SPF 50.
Ownership
Medipharma Cosmetics is owned by Dr. Theiss Naturwaren GmbH, headquartered in Homburg. The parent traces its roots to a pharmacy. In 1976 Peter Theiss took over his father's Markt-Apotheke in Homburg, and in 1978 he and his wife Barbara Theiss, a naturopath, founded the company that would become Dr. Theiss Naturwaren [8]. Its first products were made by hand in the back room of the pharmacy, according to the company's timeline.
The parent's ownership has itself changed over time. In 1987 Wella AG acquired 75 percent of the company, a move that German Wikipedia says gave Wella access to the pharmacy sales channel [8]. In 2001 the business was converted into a GmbH (a German limited company) and returned to full family ownership. In 2024 Jonas Thielmann was appointed managing director, a step the company describes as securing its succession. Wikipedia lists Peter Theiss, Giuseppe Nardi and Jonas Thielmann in the company's leadership.
Medipharma Cosmetics was one of several brands Dr. Theiss added through acquisitions. The group bought the dental-care brand Lacalut from the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim in 2000. In 2005 it took over Allga Pharma GmbH and with it the brand Allgäuer Latschenkiefer, and in 2013 the acquisition of the pharmaceutical company Dolorgiet brought in the brand proff. Alongside the company's own Dr. Theiss products, these form the sister brands of Medipharma Cosmetics.
Within this portfolio, Medipharma Cosmetics has been the parent's most visible name at home. A 2013 company profile in the German pharmacy trade publication APOTHEKE ADHOC noted that in Germany Dr. Theiss was known mainly for the medipharma cosmetics brand [9]. For 2024, German Wikipedia gives the parent group 1,329 employees and revenue of €452.4 million.
Philosophy & positioning
Medipharma Cosmetics presents itself as pharmacy cosmetics with a pharmaceutical standard. On its parent's website, the brand is described as uniting science and nature, combining proven plant-based ingredients with modern actives.
A central idea is that skincare should follow the condition of the skin rather than a single formula for everyone. The brand's tagline, "Pflege, so individuell wie Ihr Hautzustand", translates roughly as "care as individual as your skin's condition". Its website sorts face products by skin condition, from very dry, sensitive and blemish-prone skin to mature and pigmented skin, as well as couperose, a tendency to visible redness and small broken blood vessels. Body products are grouped in the same way, including a category for itchy skin and atopic eczema.
The company places particular weight on skin tolerability. It says it works with independent dermatological institutes whose studies have confirmed that its products are well tolerated and effective [2], although the institutes are not named. According to the brand, all raw materials arriving in Homburg are tested for quality, purity and condition. Pharmacists and pharmacy assistants are presented as the natural advisers for customers' skin concerns, and the website also runs an advice section on common skin problems.
Products & innovation
The olive oil range remains the brand's anchor. Its formulas are based on cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, which the brand highlights for its high share of monounsaturated fatty acids, its natural vitamin E and its plant compounds with antioxidant properties. The Olivenöl Intensivcreme, a rich cream with vitamins A and E, is among the products the brand features as customer favourites and comes in lighter and "LIFT" variants. Newer additions combine olive oil with collagen in an eye cream and a hydrating cream-gel, which the company says softens wrinkles and improves elasticity.
The Hyaluron series, launched in 2015, focuses on hydration. Medipharma Cosmetics says it uses pharmaceutical-grade hyaluronic acid, which it describes as providing intensive moisture and smoothing fine lines [4]. The series includes eye care and the Sanfte Bräune ("gentle tan") products for face and body, which give skin a gradual tan.
For sensitive skin, the Dermastabil series is designed for irritated and allergy-prone skin. Every product in the line contains the active ingredient ectoin [5]. The brand also claims that Dermastabil prevents fine dust particles from sticking to the skin, giving it a protective effect.
Beyond these core lines, the range includes a Retinal serum duo, the Intensiv, Rosé, Home Spa, Protect and Haut in Balance families, and a sun care range with face and body products, including a fluid with SPF 50+. In make-up, the range includes the 2017 Wimpern Booster, an eyebrow booster and the Mascara med line. Hair care is handled by the Phyto Booster line of shampoos and tonics for dry, dull or brittle hair and hair loss. Men's care draws on the olive oil and hyaluron lines.
Manufacturing stays largely in-house. The company says most medipharma cosmetics products are made at its own production site in Homburg/Saar [2], and that its cosmetics are produced to current good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards, for which it is certified.
Controversies
No controversy specific to Medipharma Cosmetics is documented. At the level of its parent, German Wikipedia reports that Dr. Theiss Naturwaren has been criticised for its business activities in Russia. Despite that criticism, the company has continued its main operations there, citing existing commitments and contractual obligations [8].
Current status
Medipharma Cosmetics is active. Its website continued to introduce new products in 2026, including additions to the olive oil range and the sun care line [1]. The brand says its products are available in German pharmacies and in many other European countries, and it remains part of the Dr. Theiss Naturwaren group in Homburg.
