Melasan

Melasan is an Austrian manufacturer of food supplements and functional foods based in Neumarkt am Wallersee. Most of its work happens behind other companies' labels: it describes itself as a business-to-business contract manufacturer that develops and produces supplements for clients in the medical and pharmaceutical sector. The Melasan name also appears on a smaller range of its own products, most visibly the Melasan Sport sports-nutrition line and a series of essential oils sold through pharmacies.

The company is no longer independent. It is part of the German Dermapharm AG group [5], within which it says it has served for more than a decade as the competence centre for supplements and functional foods [2]. It remains active under its own name.

Melasan does not publish a founding year or name its founders. Its own descriptions of its age also differ slightly: the homepage says the company has been developing and producing for its clients for 25 years [1], while the about page puts it at more than 25 years [2]. The Austrian commercial register lists the operating company, MELASAN Produktions- und Vertriebsges.m.b.H., with a registration date of 27 February 1996 [10]. A registration date marks when the limited company was entered in the register, which need not be the same as the start of business, so the two accounts are best read side by side rather than as a single founding date.

Melasan states on its legal notice page that it is "a company of the Dermapharm AG group" [5], and its about page places it within the corporate network of the German Dermapharm AG. The company does not give a year for when it joined the group. The Austrian commercial register lists Dermapharm GmbH as the shareholder, with that entry dated January 2016 [10]; the register shows when the shareholder was recorded, not necessarily when the deal took place. The register names Martin Schröckenfuchs as managing director since May 2016.

Within Dermapharm, Melasan sits alongside other group brands such as Cloderm, Physiotop, Sikapur and Tebamol. Its website footer links to Dermapharm's governance, risk and compliance pages and to the group's whistleblowing system, which reflects how closely the Austrian business is tied into the parent's structures.

Melasan presents itself first and foremost as a service provider. Its tagline is "Lohnherstellung aus Österreich" – contract manufacturing from Austria – and the homepage addresses prospective business partners rather than shoppers. The goal it sets out is the lasting, successful positioning of its clients' supplements on the health market.

The company calls itself the leading Austrian contract manufacturer of supplements for the medical-pharmaceutical sector. It also says that its long-standing partnerships with pharmacies have earned it a reputation as a "hidden champion" among private-label manufacturers in the Austrian market for over-the-counter health products [1]. According to Melasan, its clients range from large market players to small companies, start-ups and online shop operators in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Its stated framework is aimed at what it calls the social shift towards people taking responsibility for their own health care. Melasan lists diversity, integration, transparency, sustainability and humanity as its core values, and says these are lived out daily in its projects rather than being slogans. It is a member of IGEPHA, the Austrian Self Care Association, an industry body focused on over-the-counter medicines and health products. The company also says it has supported the Paracelsus Medical Private University in Salzburg for several years, and that a lecture hall there is named after it.

For clients, Melasan offers finished, market-ready products in a range of dosage forms: hard capsules, liquid capsules, powders, tablets, oil blends and sticks, as well as ready-made standard products. Its standard portfolio is organised by health topic rather than by product type. The topics include weight management, sleep and nerves, immunity, women's and men's health, digestion, bones and joints, sport, and two areas that touch the beauty field directly: "skin, hair and nails" and "beauty".

Quality claims centre on food-safety and organic certification. The company says its production runs under a management system certified to ISO 22000, the international food-safety standard, and that certification by Austria Bio Garantie allows it to produce and fill organic supplements [7]. It adds that it can make products carrying the V-Label for vegan and vegetarian products.

Under its own name, the most developed range is Melasan Sport, which has its own website and online shop. The line covers electrolyte and mineral drinks, among them a sports drink with magnesium and potassium, alongside protein powders and drinks, capsules such as Salzcaps, sports bars and a caffeinated High Energy Gel. Melasan Sport stresses that its products are made in Austria [6] and says they were developed to be easy on sensitive stomachs during exercise. The sport line has also appeared at local events, including a Wings for Life charity run near Mattighofen.

Outside sport, the Melasan label covers a wider pharmacy range. A pharmacy retailer describes Melasan as one of the private labels of the company of the same name in Neumarkt am Wallersee, and lists essential oils such as lavender, tea tree, camphor, cinnamon leaf, juniper, thyme and sandalwood, together with black seed oil, omega-3 capsules, reishi mushroom capsules and brewer's yeast capsules [11].

Melasan describes sustainable, future-oriented business as part of its company culture. The resource-saving measures it lists include a photovoltaic system, energy monitoring, a green roof with a bee meadow, passive cooling, recycling management and sustainable purchasing. Its packaging is collected and recycled through ARA, the Austrian packaging-recovery system.

On the social side, the company points to flexible working-time models, in-house language courses for employees with a migration background, workplace health programmes and profit-sharing for staff. It says its workforce brings together people of 16 ethnic backgrounds [8].

Melasan is an active company operating as part of the Dermapharm AG group, which took it over at a date the company does not state. The Austrian commercial register shows annual accounts filed every year from 2020 onwards, most recently entered in June 2026 [10]. The company's registered seat and production site are at Neumarkt am Wallersee, where the register recorded a change of seat and address in 2020. Its customer base spans Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and Melasan-branded products are sold mainly through pharmacies and the company's own sports-nutrition shop.
