Summary

Overview

Tebamol is a German brand of pure Australian tea tree oil, sold as a pharmacy-exclusive product. Its packaging carries the tagline "Das reine Teebaumöl" ("the pure tea tree oil"), and the brand presents the oil as an all-purpose essential oil for skin, bath, massage and household use. For several years it also carried a small line of tea tree cosmetics.

Tebamol is no longer an independent brand. It belongs to the Dermapharm group, the German pharmaceutical company based in Grünwald near Munich, which bought the Hübner Group of Ehrenkirchen at the end of 2010 [10]. The current product listing names Dermapharm AG as the responsible company. The brand's own website now redirects to Dermapharm's general product pages, and the range has narrowed to the oil alone.

Origin & founders

Neither the year Tebamol was launched nor the people behind it are documented. The oldest dated brand document is a package leaflet from June 2021, which names HÜBNER Naturarzneimittel GmbH in Ehrenkirchen, a small town in Baden in south-west Germany, as the company that guarantees the oil's quality and supplies it [4].

The same leaflet frames the product within the longer story of tea tree oil itself. It says the Bundjalung Aboriginal people of northern New South Wales knew of the leaves' properties for probably several thousand years, using them in infusions and compresses. According to the leaflet, the name "tea tree" goes back to James Cook, who had a tea brewed from the leaves and made the plant known beyond Australia in 1770. The oil was first distilled in 1925 and, the leaflet adds, became a common household remedy in Australia. These dates belong to the history of the ingredient; they are not founding dates for Tebamol.

History & milestones

Tebamol's documented history runs through the companies that have stood behind it. The Hübner Group took shape in 1998, when the pharmacy-focused drug maker Medopharm was combined with Anton Hübner, a producer of goods for German health food shops. The sugar company Nordzucker bought the group in 2000 [9].

In December 2010, Nordzucker announced that it was leaving the health sector and selling the Hübner Group to Dermapharm AG by the end of that year [10]. At the time, the trade publication FoodIngredientsFirst described Anton Hübner as Germany's largest producer of health products sold exclusively through health food stores, with around 180 employees making natural remedies, food supplements, medicines and natural body care products. Reporting on the deal in February 2011, the pharmacy-trade outlet apotheke adhoc noted that the new owners intended to keep the Ehrenkirchen site. Neither report mentions Tebamol by name, so it is not established whether the brand came from Medopharm, from Anton Hübner or from elsewhere, or whether it already belonged to the group in 2010.

The June 2021 leaflet gives the clearest picture of the brand at its broadest. Alongside the pure oil in 10 ml and 20 ml bottles, it presented a pharmacy-only cosmetics series built around tea tree oil: an Aktiv-Creme, a Haar-Shampoo, a Dusch-Gel, Pickel-Tupfer blemish drops and a Fuß-Spray foot spray.

A later, undated version of the leaflet marks the next step. It names Dermapharm AG in Grünwald, rather than Hübner, as the company guaranteeing the oil's quality, and it lists only the two bottle sizes of pure oil, with no cosmetics [11].

Ownership

Tebamol is owned by Dermapharm, a publicly listed German pharmaceutical company founded in 1991 by Wilhelm Beier [8]. The listed parent is Dermapharm Holding SE, which trades on Germany's SDAX index; the operating company named on Tebamol's packaging and product listing is Dermapharm AG. The group specialises in branded medicines, particularly dermatological and allergy treatments, and also runs a segment for other health products that includes supplements, herbal medicines, cosmetics and medical devices.

Two Dermapharm-group documents name different companies as the one responsible for Tebamol. The June 2021 leaflet names HÜBNER Naturarzneimittel GmbH, Schloßstraße 11–17, Ehrenkirchen [4]. The current product listing, and the newer leaflet, name Dermapharm AG, with its seat in Grünwald [3]. This article follows the newer attribution, which places the brand with Dermapharm AG in Grünwald. Both names point to the same corporate family: Hübner itself has been part of Dermapharm since the end of 2010. Dermapharm's list of group locations places a company called Anton Hübner GmbH & Co. KG at the same Ehrenkirchen street address that the 2021 leaflet gives for HÜBNER Naturarzneimittel GmbH; whether the two names refer to a single company is not documented.

Within the Dermapharm group, Tebamol sits alongside other consumer health brands such as Physiotop.

Philosophy & positioning

Tebamol's identity rests on one ingredient. The leaflet describes it as "the essential oil for many different uses" and stresses that it is pure Australian tea tree oil from a single species. Of the more than 200 Melaleuca species worldwide, the leaflet says, only about 30 are native to Australia, and only one, Melaleuca alternifolia of the terpinen-4-ol type, has the properties the brand values. The company describes the tree as hardy and disease-resistant in Australia's hot, humid climate, with leaves harvested every 15 to 18 months and the oil extracted by steam distillation.

To set its oil apart, the brand uses its own registered quality label, T.T.O. According to the leaflet, T.T.O. quality means the oil is laboratory-tested for purity, 100 percent natural, contains about 4 percent cineole and at least 35 percent terpinen-4-ol [4]. The leaflet places this next to the international ISO 4730 standard for tea tree oil, which it describes as setting a minimum of 30 percent terpinen-4-ol and a maximum of 15 percent cineole. In other words, the brand's own label sets tighter limits than the standard it cites.

Distribution is the second pillar of the positioning. Tebamol has consistently been sold through pharmacies rather than drugstores or general retail, and Dermapharm's listing marks the oil as "apothekenexklusiv", meaning available only in pharmacies.

Products & innovation

The core product is Tebamol Teebaumöl, sold in 10 ml and 20 ml bottles. Dermapharm files it under the category "raw material" rather than as a finished cosmetic. The listed uses are broad: diluted in water as a rinse for blemished skin, added to a bath for dry skin, mixed into oil for sports massage, a few drops in water as a mouth rinse for fresh breath, and as an insect repellent. The company says all Tebamol products are dermatologically tested and well tolerated by the skin [4].

The packaging is explicit about the limits of a concentrated essential oil. It instructs users never to apply the oil undiluted and to use it only externally, and it carries hazard warnings that the oil can irritate the skin and eyes, may cause allergic skin reactions, and can be fatal if swallowed and it enters the airways [11]. Following a recommendation from Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the leaflet advises storing it away from light, in its outer carton and brown glass bottle.

The 2021 cosmetics series extended the tea tree theme into everyday care:

- Aktiv-Creme (50 ml) – a cream for oily and blemished skin, combining tea tree oil with plantain, Mahonia extract and salicylic acid; the company described it as free of silicones, paraffins and other petroleum-based ingredients. - Pickel-Tupfer (10 ml) – a dab-on liquid for spots with added lavender oil, described as free of fragrance, colourants and preservatives. The brand said it cleanses blemished skin and helps prevent new blemishes. - Haar-Shampoo (200 ml) – a shampoo containing tea tree oil and D-panthenol. - Dusch-Gel (200 ml) – a shower gel with a citrus and tea tree scent. - Fuß-Spray (200 ml) – a foot spray.

None of these products appears on the current listing. No third-party certifications, patents or research partnerships are documented for the brand.

Current status

Tebamol is an acquired brand that is still on sale. As of October 2026, Tebamol Teebaumöl in 10 ml and 20 ml bottles is listed by Dermapharm as a pharmacy-exclusive product, with Dermapharm AG as the responsible company [3]. It remains available through online pharmacies [12].

The brand no longer has a website of its own: www.tebamol.de redirects to Dermapharm's general product page [5]. The most recent dated brand document is the June 2021 leaflet, and no new products or news have appeared in the past year. Over that period the range has contracted from an oil plus five cosmetics to the pure oil alone. The brand's documented distribution is through pharmacies in Germany, with packaging and leaflets in German.
