Overview
Miller Harris is a British fragrance house founded in London in 2000 by the perfumer Lyn Harris [5][7]. The company built its name on bespoke and niche perfumery, working without the commercial briefs typical of the mainstream industry, and has since expanded into candles, home fragrance and bath and body products. It remains in operation, with a live retail presence and product launches into the mid-2020s.
Lyn Harris named the house after her father's middle and last names [7]. Having trained in Paris at Cinquième Sens and in Grasse at the fragrance manufacturer Robertet, she positioned the brand around craftsmanship and creative freedom rather than trend-driven formulas.
Origin and founders
Lyn Harris established Miller Harris in London in 2000, beginning with bespoke commissions before developing a wider collection. According to editorial coverage of the house, the brand was conceived as a niche perfume line that gave its perfumer room to work outside conventional commercial constraints [7]. The NEO Investment Partners profile describes Harris as the only British female master perfumer with her own brand, trained in Paris and Grasse.
One of the brand's earliest and most cited creations is L'Air de Rien, a bespoke fragrance Harris composed for the actress and singer Jane Birkin.
Ownership
In 2012, a stake in the company changed hands. Wikipedia records that Lyn Harris sold a stake that year but does not name the buyer [5]; NEO Investment Partners' own profile and the perfume editorial site Now Smell This identify NEO Investment Partners as the investor [6][7]. The company has been associated with NEO Investment Partners since that transaction, and NEO describes the partnership as focused on growing the brand internationally through an omni-channel approach.
Lyn Harris later left the house to found a separate venture, Perfumer H [7]. Miller Harris has continued to operate and release new fragrances since her departure.
History and milestones
The brand drew international attention in 2010, when Michelle Obama received Miller Harris candles as a gift from the then-UK Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife [5]. Between 2010 and 2020 the house collaborated with the French fragrance manufacturer Robertet on launches. In 2018 it released the fragrance Scherzo and obtained the Positive Luxury Butterfly Mark certification. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the company donated its warehouse stock of hand wash and soap to the charity Age UK [5].
By its own account on the brand site, Miller Harris has been creating fragrances for more than 25 years, consistent with a 2000 founding.
Philosophy and positioning
Miller Harris presents itself under the heading of "conscious luxury." The company says it was founded on the idea of giving perfumers complete creative freedom, choosing what it describes as craftsmanship, individuality and artistic exploration over predictable commercial formulas. Its stated values include quiet innovation and a willingness to challenge convention, and it frames its fragrances as drawing on poetry, nature, memory, music and art. The house uses the tagline "Crafted from artistry, nurtured by nature."
Products and innovation
The range centres on Eau de Parfum and Extrait fragrances, alongside perfume oils, scented candles, reed diffusers, hand creams, and bath and body products. Named fragrances associated with the house include Scherzo, Rose Silence, Secret Gardenia, Tea Tonique, Hydra Figue, Peau Santal and L'Air de Rien, with releases between 2006 and 2019 including several iterations of La Fumée.
On sustainability, the company reports that 20 percent of its Eau de Parfums contain at least one upcycled material, and that it is developing screw-neck bottles to allow refills of its core range. It describes vegan, cruelty-free and ethically sourced products, and lists membership of industry bodies including Walpole, the CTPA and The Fragrance Foundation. Miller Harris has held the Positive Luxury Butterfly Mark since 2018 and was recertified in April 2024 [4].
