Perfumer H

Perfumer H is a British fragrance house built around the work of perfumer Lyn Harris, founded in 2015 and based in London. It sells eau de parfum, candles, incense and body products, and is known for hand-blown, refillable glass vessels made in collaboration with independent craftspeople. The company describes itself as a house of "one style, one vision" — Harris's own — and presents the perfumer's hand as visible at every stage of the work.

Harris had previously co-created the fragrance and candle line Miller Harris in 2000, and Perfumer H grew out of her decision to step back from that earlier business and work under her own name [6]. The brand remains active, with standalone shops and concessions across Europe and Asia and an ongoing refill service.

Lyn Harris grew up in Yorkshire and Scotland and trained in perfumery with Monique Schlienger in Paris before working with the fragrance house Robertet in Grasse, France. She is described as a British independent perfumer. In 2000 she created Miller Harris with her partner Christophe Michel, producing scents that included L'Air de Rien, originally made as a bespoke fragrance for Jane Birkin.

Sources differ on when Perfumer H began and on who founded it. Wikipedia records that in 2014 Harris, while remaining a consultant and shareholder in Miller Harris, turned her focus to a new venture, Perfumer H, which she launched in 2015 [6]; the 2014 date marks the shift of her attention, and 2015 the launch. The brand's own careers page and the trade publication BeautyMatter both give 2015 as the founding year [7]. On authorship, the company frames Perfumer H entirely around Harris as its single creative vision, while BeautyMatter names it a house "founded in 2015 by perfumer Lyn Harris and her husband Christophe Michel" [7]. Harris is the primary creative founder in either account.

According to Liberty London, Harris founded the house intending to honour the artisanal craft of perfume-making and to create a platform for her own style [8]. The company works from a London laboratory while maintaining what it calls a constant connection with Grasse, the traditional centre of French perfumery where Harris trained.

Perfumer H positions itself as an independent, artisanal house that treats perfume as a craft rather than a commercial product. Harris has said that "naturals are the soul of perfumery and the chemicals are the magic," and describes deriving fragrance names from what she calls her olfactory landscapes [9]. The house invites customers into its working laboratory, and its studio practice — visitors watching the perfumer blend and formulate — is part of how it presents itself.

The tagline is "Beautiful, Unconventional Fragrances." On its careers page the company frames its ambition as "redefining the notion of what a luxury brand encompasses" [5]. Collaboration runs through the work: Harris partners with glassblowers, graphic designers and architects, and the hand-blown bottles are made with master glass blower Michael Ruh.

The house is centred on eau de parfum, offered in standard and hand-blown 100ml formats, alongside candles, Japanese-style incense, and hand and body products. Its Icons collection groups several of its signature scents — Ink, Rain Wood, Steam, Moss and Dandelion. Individual fragrances such as Rain Cloud, Dust and Fig have featured in retail selections.

A refill service is core to the offering. According to Perfumer H, its 100ml refill bottles are designed to replenish its hand-blown perfumes so a fragrance can be enjoyed repeatedly "while contributing to less waste" [4]. Empty hand-blown candle vessels can be returned to its shops, in person or by post, and exchanged for a new candle at half the original price so the glass can be reused. The company frames this around a belief that "a purchase this beautiful is for life."

Perfumer H remains independent, though it has taken outside minority investment. In October 2020 it received a minority investment from Patina Brands [7]. In June 2021 the Brazilian group Natura & Co made a minority investment through its corporate venture vehicle, Fable Investments, on terms that were not disclosed [7]. BeautyMatter reported the Natura stake as the fund's inaugural investment, describing Fable as a vehicle making minority investments in small brands with strong direct-to-consumer offerings. Neither stake represents a controlling interest, and the company is not described as having a parent owner. Separately, Wikipedia notes that the London private equity fund Neo Capital took a stake in Miller Harris — Harris's earlier company — in 2012 [6].

Harris and the house have drawn editorial attention in the fragrance and design press. Liberty London profiled her Marylebone studio, describing the "delicate, unconventional scents that have become her brand's signature" [8]. The Financial Times, in its HTSI supplement, wrote that she had "captured the world in a bottle." Scentury profiled the house as exploring "the artisanal side of the perfume world" [9]. Harris's wider career has also been covered by titles including The Telegraph, Vogue and the Evening Standard.

Perfumer H is an active brand. It operates standalone stores in London and Paris and concessions in Liberty and Le Bon Marché, with further stores across Asia in Hong Kong, Macau, Shanghai, Seoul, Taipei and Tokyo, and states it has more than 150 wholesale accounts internationally [5]. Its most recent widely reported corporate event is the 2021 Natura & Co minority investment, and it continues to run its e-commerce site and refill service.
