Overview
Mimitika is a French suncare brand based in Bordeaux, founded in 2014 by Audrey Delort-Laval [2]. It makes vegan, cruelty-free sun-protection products — creams, sprays, sticks, self-tanners and serums — manufactured in France, and positions itself on the idea that sunscreen should be as pleasant to use as any other cosmetic. The company remains active, trading through its own online store and a range of European and UK stockists.
The brand grew out of a personal frustration rather than a lab brief. According to Mimitika, Delort-Laval was sunbathing in the summer of 2014, reading a magazine article about skin-cancer statistics, when she decided that the problem was not awareness but the products themselves: people knew they should wear sunscreen and disliked doing it.

Origin & founders
Before Mimitika, Delort-Laval worked in product and marketing at Chanel; French business press describes her as an HEC graduate who spent close to a decade in cosmetics before striking out on her own [9]. The brand's account is that she left that role specifically to build a suncare line people would actually enjoy applying [2].
The founding story the company tells centres on a gap between knowledge and behaviour. Mimitika cites figures it encountered at the outset — that two-thirds of French consumers under-apply sunscreen, and that most report at least one sunburn a year despite knowing better — and frames the common complaints as the real obstacle: that sunscreens "leave too many white marks, are too greasy, too sticky, and prevent tanning." The stated answer was light, fast-absorbing textures that leave no white cast, without compromising UVA and UVB protection.
The exact founding date is recorded inconsistently across sources. The brand's own history and French business coverage both place the founding in 2014 [2][9]; at least one retailer listing dates the brand to 2016 [11]. The later year corresponds to Mimitika's first outside funding round rather than its creation, so this article follows the 2014 founding date stated by the company and corroborated in the French press.
Philosophy & positioning
Mimitika presents itself as a small, informal operation — "a small team full of dreams" working, in its words, "with heart and consciousness to change the game of sun protection." The tone is deliberately casual: the company says it develops products the way it would want them itself, testing first on "ourselves, our friends, and our family," and describes its communication as "no-nonsense." Its tagline is "Sunscreen for sun lovers."
The positioning sits within a broader wave of made-in-France, pharmacy-style suncare aimed at people who want effective protection without a heavy or chalky finish. The company's stated vision is "healthy, natural skin without artifices" — skin "we expose to the sun, but never to excess" — pairing sun protection with skincare-style care rather than treating it purely as a barrier product.
Products & innovation
The range covers sun protection, self-tanning and a smaller skincare line. Sun-care items include an SPF50 face sunscreen and an invisible SPF50 stick, alongside before- and after-sun products; the self-tanning line — including a self-tanning mousse and a self-tanning face cream — sits among the brand's better-selling products, and a Sun-Kissed Glow serum extends the catalogue into skincare.
Mimitika says its sunscreens rely predominantly on organic (chemical) UV filters chosen for lighter textures, enriched with natural ingredients such as banana extract and virgin hibiscus oil, with vitamin E for antioxidant protection; mineral options use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The company states that it uses no nanoparticles in any formulation, citing research suggesting nanoparticles may harm coral reefs [5][8], and that all products apart from the sunscreens contain over 90% natural-origin ingredients [6]. Products are developed in Bordeaux with French laboratories and tested by independent French labs [6].
Sustainability
Sun protection and ocean health are linked in Mimitika's messaging, and its stance here is unusually qualified. The company excludes oxybenzone and octocrylene, two filters associated with reef damage, and explains that it "care[s] too much about the ocean and its inhabitants to risk harming it." At the same time it declines to market its products as reef-safe outright, stating that it "will never claim that our products 'preserve the oceans' simply because there are still many unknowns about the impact of sunscreens on marine biodiversity," and describing them instead as the most ocean-friendly option "based on current knowledge" [4].
On packaging and supply, Mimitika says all of its bottles and packaging are recyclable and that it works with French suppliers, uses FSC-certified paper and prints its labels domestically [6]. The company has stated an intention to move toward recycled-material packaging.
Recognition
Mimitika lists French and international fashion and beauty titles — among them Vogue, ELLE, Marie Claire and Madame Figaro — among the outlets that have featured it [1]. In a 2022 review, the beauty site Live That Glow assessed the brand's Sun Oil SPF 50 favourably, calling it well absorbing and non-greasy and naming it the reviewer's "new favourite SPF line," while noting that the fragranced formula may not suit very sensitive skin [8].
Current status
Mimitika is an active brand. As of 2026 it operates a live direct-to-consumer store with a current catalogue and seasonal promotions, and its products are carried by outside retailers across Europe and the United Kingdom [1]; it ships internationally, including to Nordic markets. Ownership beyond the founder is not publicly documented.
