Summary

Overview

MineTan is an Australian self-tanning brand founded in 2013 by entrepreneur Kirstie Kirkham, who poured, packed and posted her first batches from her own garage [10]. The brand built its range around fast-developing, skincare-led sunless tans and grew into a global business sold through more than 40 major retailers. Since December 2021 it has been owned by the Swiss-based Mibelle Group, part of the Migros Industrie group, following the acquisition of its parent company MARQ Labs [15].

The brand presents itself under the tagline "where cosmetics and skincare meet self-tan," and its products are marketed under the MineTan name (sometimes styled simply as "Mine"). It remains active, with new products and editorial content appearing on its channels into 2026.

Origin and founders

Kirstie Kirkham worked as an events manager specialising in beauty events and expos in the Australian beauty sector before starting the company. According to editorial profiles, she set out to solve problems she saw in existing self-tanners: unnatural colour, long development times and strong smells, combined with a personal concern about sun exposure in Australia's climate. The brand frames the gap she identified as the need for a safer, healthier alternative to sun tanning. After failing to find a product that developed quickly, did not smell and looked natural, she developed her own and launched MineTan from a garage in 2013 [13].

Her husband, Cameron Kirkham, is named as her business partner [9]. The earliest operation was hands-on: the founder personally mixed, bottled and shipped the first orders before the company moved into larger manufacturing. The company has remained closely tied to its founder's public profile, and Kirkham has been the subject of several entrepreneur-focused features, including in Home Business Magazine and Authority Magazine.

The founding date is given consistently as 2013 across the brand's own material and several independent profiles, including its tenth-anniversary post published in May 2023 [7]. One trade article, Professional Beauty Australia, describes the launch as "more than a decade ago," which would place it slightly earlier; the brand's own anniversary record and the other sources point to 2013 [9].

History and milestones

MineTan's first product was the Olive Pro Spray Mist, originally called the Original Pro Spray Mist and positioned by the company as the world's first one-hour express tan formula, finishing touch-dry with no orange tones [7]. The product was aimed first at professional use, and the brand has said its formulas are used by salons internationally. The range later expanded from professional spray mists into self-tan foams for home use, colour-correcting tans aimed at specific skin tones, and at-home spray-tan systems such as the Bronze Babe machine, which the company introduced to bring salon-style spray tanning into the home.

By around 2018, roughly five years after launch, editorial coverage described the company as a global leader with offices in several countries [12]. The brand reported rapid early growth, with one press release citing year-over-year growth of more than 300 percent over a two-year period [10]. Over time the catalogue broadened to include tan serums, drops, lotions, mists and professional equipment, as well as accessories such as tan erasers and applicator and exfoliation mitts.

In 2023 the company marked its tenth anniversary, recapping milestones that included what it describes as the first coconut-water-based tan [7].

Ownership

MineTan's parent company, MARQ Labs Inc. (operating in Europe through the entity Marque of Brands B.V.), was acquired by the Mibelle Group on 23 December 2021 [15]. Mibelle is a Swiss manufacturer within Migros Industrie, and it described the purchase as its entry into the self-tanning category and the United States market [15]. Within the wider group, MineTan sits alongside sister tanning and personal-care brands including b.tan and b.fresh, as well as a private-label manufacturing arm.

Philosophy and positioning

The company frames its approach as "skin-first" tanning, arguing that nourished, conditioned skin produces a more natural-looking, deeper and longer-lasting result. MineTan describes formulas that pair tan-developing actives with skincare-style ingredients, and its stated mission is summarised as "a tan for everyone." A second strand of its positioning is customisation: the brand says "one shade doesn't fit all" and groups products into collections for traditional bronze tones, colour-correcting shades and targeted treatments.

Products and innovation

The core actives across the range are DHA, which the company states is 100 percent natural, and erythrulose, the two ingredients that produce a sunless tan. These are combined with skincare ingredients the brand highlights, such as hyaluronic acid, coconut water, niacinamide, ceramides and plant oils including argan and jojoba. The proprietary "1 Hour Express" formula lets users control the depth of colour by choosing when to rinse it off, according to the company.

Signature products include the Rose Illuminating Facial Tan Mist, the Coconut Water Self Tan Foam and the Bronze Babe personal spray-tan kit. MineTan states that its products are vegan and cruelty-free, free of parabens and palm oil, and PETA-approved. The brand sells both directly to consumers and through professional salon channels, and the parent company operates manufacturing and offices across the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, with origins in Australia. Retail placement, the parent company says, spans chains such as Walmart, Ulta and Boots.

Recognition

MineTan has been covered chiefly through founder profiles and trade and lifestyle press rather than industry awards, no record of which appears in the available sources. Australian outlet Female.com.au has described the brand as having "quickly grown a cult following of beauty elites," naming influencers such as Ariana Merinda, Yuni Wilson and Amanda Blanks, and credited its "world's first One Hour Tan" as the line's defining point of difference. Founder-focused features have appeared in Professional Beauty Australia, Home Business Magazine and Authority Magazine.
