Overview
Miraculum is a Polish cosmetics company whose brand heritage traces to 1924, when the physician Leon Luster founded a small manufacturer in Kraków [6]. It was among the first cosmetics companies in Poland, and over the following century it grew into a maker of skincare, fragrance, depilatory products and makeup. The name carries a notable double history: the consumer brand dates to the interwar period, but the present legal entity, Miraculum S.A., is corporately rooted in a separate company, Grupa Kolastyna, which adopted the Miraculum name in 2010 after the original Kraków factory went bankrupt [7].
The company is publicly traded on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and remains active, reporting Q1 2026 financial results and pursuing a brand revival under new ownership acquired in 2024 [10]. It markets itself around its long Polish heritage, summarised in the tagline "Polish Cosmetics with a Tradition Since 1924."
Origin & founders
The business began in Kraków in 1924 under the name "Doktora Lustra Preparaty Kosmetyczno-Lekarskie Miraculum," founded by a local physician. According to the company, its founder was "doctor Leon Luser" [2]; Polish Wikipedia, an academic source from the University of Agriculture in Kraków, and later press instead spell the name Leon Luster, and the original Polish company name preserves the genitive form "Lustra" [6]. Glowpedia uses the spelling Luster, while noting the brand's own English-language page renders it Luser.
Its first products were soaps and toothpaste before the range broadened into powders, sun oils, creams, eyebrow and lip pencils, nail products and depilatory treatments. Early on, the founder paired the products with some of Poland's first celebrity cosmetics endorsements, enlisting Zofia Batycka — Miss Polonia and Vice Miss Europe 1930 — and the interwar singer Hanka Ordonówna.
History & milestones
The factory earned an early international mark of recognition in 1931, taking a prize for its face powder at the Paris World Exhibition. In 1939 it was renamed "Przemysł Lekarsko-Kosmetyczny MIRACULUM S.A. w Krakowie," and operations ceased in February 1940 during the Second World War. The firm was nationalised afterward, and through the communist decades it produced several products that became fixtures of the era: in 1955 it added luxury perfumes in glass bottles, in 1971 it launched the Pani Walewska perfume line — advertised by the actress Beata Tyszkiewicz — and in 1977 it introduced the men's line Brutal. A joint venture with the Soviet Union, in which the Soviet government held a 40% stake, was established in 1986.
Privatisation followed in 1996, and the original Miraculum factory debuted on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in 1997. It was acquired by Grupa Kolastyna in 2003, but the original company did not survive: in 2009 it declared bankruptcy with debts of 79 million PLN, and its factory buildings were sold to a developer.
The modern corporate line runs in parallel. Grupa Kolastyna listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in 2007, and after its own bankruptcy proceedings in 2010 it renamed itself Miraculum S.A. on 31 December 2010, carrying the heritage brand forward [7]. This produces a genuine ambiguity in the company's stock-market history: the brand-side sources date the current entity's listing to February 2007, while the original 1924 factory had listed back in 1997 [5]. The headquarters moved from Kraków to Warsaw in December 2016.
Ownership
The current entity, Miraculum S.A., is the dominant company in a capital group and is listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Over the years it has reshaped its portfolio through several deals: in 2007 it bought brands from PZ Cussons Polska, in 2010 it sold the Kolastyna brand to Sarantis Polska for 11.6 million PLN, and in 2012 it acquired Multicolor, gaining the Joko and Virtual brands [5].
In 2024 the Polish businessman Marek Kamola acquired a majority stake, dismissed the board and assumed direct operational control of the company himself [10]. The company today manages a portfolio of roughly eleven to twelve brands, among them Pani Walewska, Gracja, Tanita, Paloma, Wars, Lider, Być Może and Joko, alongside the core Miraculum line.
Philosophy & positioning
Miraculum frames its identity around combining, in its words, "medical knowledge with a passion for cosmetology," describing its formulas as effective and well-researched, built on active ingredients and natural extracts. The company lists its values as quality, innovation and a passion for beauty, set against its Polish heritage. Most of its skincare sits at accessible drugstore pricing, with the CHOPIN fragrance line positioned as a premium exception.
Products & innovation
The company's portfolio spans face and body care, perfumery, depilatory products and makeup. Its historical signatures remain its best-known products: the Pani Walewska perfume line and the men's brand Brutal, both described in 2025 revival coverage as legendary products of Poland's communist period.
Among its current ranges, the CHOPIN fragrance line is distinctive. It features three scents — Constance, Marie and George Sand — named for women in the life of the composer Fryderyk Chopin, with the singer Natalia Kukulska as ambassador and co-creator. According to a Polish government export article, Miraculum is the only company in the world authorised to use the Chopin name in cosmetics, through an exclusive agreement with the Fryderyk Chopin Institute [8]. The CHOPIN perfumes have been registered for sale in Japan.
Miraculum's skincare is organised into named lines including Retinol Age-Synergy, Bakuchiol, Collagen Pro-Skin, Pepti-Lifting, Asta C.Plankton and Exo-Some Regenesis, drawing on ingredients such as retinol, bakuchiol, peptides, collagen and ceramides. The company says it was the first to introduce ceramides, algae, fruit acids and liquid crystal structures to the cosmetic market.
Recognition
The brand's earliest formal recognition was the 1931 prize for face powder at the Paris World Exhibition. In more recent years it has featured at the Slavic B2Beauty trade fair in Kielce in 2023, where it presented to roughly 100 foreign buyers, and it served as a partner of the Poland Pavilion at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, billed in connection with its centenary [9]. Its marketing history is closely tied to Polish public figures, from Batycka and Ordonówna in the interwar years to Tyszkiewicz and, more recently, Kukulska.
Controversies
The original Miraculum factory collapsed financially: in 2009 it declared bankruptcy carrying 79 million PLN in debt, and its buildings were sold off [6]. Separately, Grupa Kolastyna — the entity that would become today's Miraculum S.A. — filed for bankruptcy with a settlement option in 2010 before its renaming later that year [7].
Current status
Miraculum remains an active company. The current entity, Miraculum S.A., is listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and filed a Q1 2026 financial statement, with the brand site carrying product activity into late 2025 [4]. Under Kamola's ownership the company has pursued a revival, reporting first-quarter 2025 sales up 17% to 15 million PLN, though coverage notes it remains, in its own framing, far from full financial stabilisation [10]. It markets in Poland and is recruiting export agents for the South American, North American, French and German markets.
