Summary

Overview

MISSHA is a South Korean skincare and cosmetics brand headquartered in the Myeongdong district of Seoul. It began in 2000 as an online store and grew into one of the more widely distributed names of the K-beauty wave, known for affordable formulas and for hybrid products such as BB cream. The brand is owned by Able C&C Co., Ltd., a Korean cosmetics company, and remains active, with global e-commerce operations and a worldwide store network.

The company built its reputation on a simple proposition: quality skincare and makeup at low prices. That positioning, combined with a handful of widely sold products, carried MISSHA well beyond its home market into China, Japan, Europe and the United States.

Origin and founders

MISSHA traces its roots to 2000, when Seo Young-pil, a former cosmetics researcher, set up an online homepage called "Beautynet" [4]. The venture sold skincare and cosmetics directly to customers, and the company opened its first physical store in 2002 at Ewha Women's University in Seoul [1]. According to one brand history, the first stores were positioned around the same low-cost promise that still defines the brand.

The name, by one account, joins the words "Miss" and "Sha" to convey an intention of elegant, refined products.

History and milestones

After its 2002 store debut, MISSHA expanded quickly. It entered China and opened a Fifth Avenue franchise in New York City in 2005, followed by its first franchises in China and Europe in 2006 [4]. By 2010 the company reported more than five million members and over 360 franchises in China. Not all expansion held: all twenty of its Hong Kong and Macau stores closed in January 2015.

In 2018 the company changed its brand identity, adopting a new brand essence it described as "SIMPLE". Two of its products became long-running anchors: the Time Revolution First Treatment Essence passed ten million units sold by 2019, and the M Perfect Cover BB Cream reached 130 million units sold globally by 2020, the year MISSHA marked its twentieth anniversary with roughly 30,000 stores [1]. As of May 2020 the company reported around ten million customers worldwide and 32,829 stores, most of them in Japan [4].

Ownership

MISSHA's own brand page lists ABLE C&C as its parent company but does not describe how that ownership came about [1]. Wikipedia and a separate brand-history source add that MISSHA started as an independent venture in 2000 and was acquired by Able C&C Co., Ltd. in 2006 [4][5]. Able C&C, a Korean cosmetics company, also owns other beauty brands, including A'Pieu.

Philosophy and positioning

MISSHA frames its approach around the idea that "quality should be affordable," and the company states that "beauty exists in every moment of our daily lives" under the tagline "Beauty in Every Moment". Its US site describes a focus on effects-driven formulas that contain "only the necessities," delivered through what it calls advanced absorption technology. The brand sets out three pillars on its main brand page: ORIGIN (effects-focused ingredients), TECH (custom absorption technology) and LAB, which it ties to the needs and data of ten million customers.

Wikipedia characterises the brand's strategy as making lower-cost versions of more expensive products, citing formulations compared to SK-II and Estée Lauder [4]. The price tier is generally that of a drugstore brand; the M Perfect Cover BB Cream, for example, has been sold for under twenty US dollars.

Products and innovation

The brand's catalogue spans skincare, makeup, and hair and body products, organised on its site into sections such as Skincare, Makeup and Hair & Body. Its best-known lines include Time Revolution, M Perfect Cover BB Cream, Vita C Plus, Artemisia, Cell Renew Snail, Super Aqua and Atelo Collagen.

MISSHA's US site names probiotic and fermentation technologies as core competencies and points to a custom absorption technology meant to help ingredients deliver their intended effect. Hero ingredients across its products include bifida ferment lysate, hyaluronic acid, ceramide, snail mucin and botanical extracts such as artemisia, rosemary and chamomile [6]. The Time Revolution First Treatment Essence has drawn a following for what one source calls its skin-transforming effects.

Recognition

The M Perfect Cover BB Cream gained renewed attention after the rapper Cardi B promoted it on TikTok. SheKnows reported that the cream's blend of bifida ferment lysate and antioxidant-rich botanicals had "turned it into a sleeper hit among older shoppers," describing it as a K-beauty staple whose appeal reached well beyond the rapper's fanbase [6].

Controversies

In August 2007, a court ruling found MISSHA liable for trademark infringement against Mary Quant Cosmetics, and the company was required to change its original flower logo [4].

Current status

MISSHA is active. As a subsidiary of Able C&C, it operates global e-commerce sites and a large international store network, and trade coverage from 2023 reported continued operations and growth [4].
