Overview
Mugler is a French fashion and fragrance house founded by the designer Manfred Thierry Mugler. The label began as a couture name in the 1970s and is today known chiefly for its perfumes, above all Angel, the scent widely credited with launching the modern gourmand fragrance genre. Since 2002 the brand has operated under successive corporate owners rather than as an independent house; it is currently part of L'Oréal's Luxe division, having been acquired from the Clarins Fragrance Group in a deal announced in 2019 [4].
Sources give two dates for the brand's beginning. L'Oréal's corporate page and editorial accounts place the creation of the Thierry Mugler label in 1974 [3][5], while the founder's first Paris boutique, on the Place des Victoires, opened in 1978 [1]. Glowpedia treats 1974 as the founding year and 1978 as a later retail milestone.

Origin and founder
Manfred Thierry Mugler was born in Strasbourg on 21 December 1948 and died in 2022 [1]. He launched his own label in 1974, and according to editorial accounts the collections were quickly picked up by retailers including Browns in London, Neiman Marcus and Saks. Through the 1980s and 1990s the house became internationally recognised for an avant-garde, architectural and theatrical approach to couture, with structured bustiers and sheath dresses built, in the designer's words, for women "bigger, stronger and taller than common mortals." Mugler was also among the early designers to cast drag performers and transgender models in his runway shows.
History and milestones
The house moved into perfume in 1992 with Angel, its first fragrance. The couture and ready-to-wear division was shut down in 2003 after financial losses, while the profitable perfume business was kept running [1]. The fragrance line expanded over the following years: A*Men, the brand's first men's scent, arrived in 1997, Alien followed in 2005, and Womanity launched in 2010. A separate cosmetics line, Thierry Mugler Beauty, was introduced in 2008. The founder retired from fashion in 2002 and returned as a creative adviser in 2013.
Ownership
Mugler has changed hands several times. Clarins acquired a 34% stake in Thierry Mugler Couture for fragrance production in 1990, then raised its holding to 83.5% in 1997, after which it held the rights to the Thierry Mugler name [1]. On 22 October 2019, L'Oréal announced that it would acquire Mugler and Azzaro from the Clarins Fragrance Group, with the deal expected to close in the first quarter of 2020 [4]. The combined Mugler and Azzaro business carried revenue of roughly 340 million euros in 2018. The brand now sits within L'Oréal's Luxe division.
Philosophy and positioning
L'Oréal positions Mugler as "fearless, unconventional, singular together," a house that, in the parent company's words, "subverts codes, turns convention on its head" and makes fashion and fragrances "that defy both categorization and time." The brand's tagline is given as "Life is a show," paired with the founder's phrase "My limit is no limit." Mugler is positioned in the luxury tier.
Products and innovation
Angel, launched in 1992, is the brand's defining product. Built on praline, chocolate and a heavy patchouli accord, with red berries and vanilla, it is recognised as the first modern gourmand perfume — a category named for its edible, dessert-like character [2]. Editorial and trade accounts describe Angel as having surpassed Chanel No. 5 to become the best-selling perfume in France, and as of 2011 it ranked as the fifth best-selling perfume of all time in the United States, according to The NPD Group [2]. The fragrance was sold in an irregular star-shaped bottle and was, per L'Oréal, "born refillable." Together, Angel and its companion scent Alien have been reported to generate around 280 million dollars in annual sales.
The brand has built its sustainability messaging around refills. L'Oréal describes a goal of "luxury with a positive impact," delivered through refillable bottles served by the in-store Mugler Fountain, which the company calls "the pioneer of fragrance refillability," alongside home refill options.
Recognition
Angel was inducted into the FiFi Award Hall of Fame in 2007 [2]. The Fragrance Foundation has credited the scent with ushering in "an era of gourmand scents, forever changing the landscape of the fragrance industry" [6]. Industry figures interviewed by Beauty Independent describe a lasting influence on how perfumers work; Luckyscent co-founder Franco Wright called Angel "arguably one of the most talked about (and worn) fragrances ever created," noting its polarising "look at me" character. The fragrance has been fronted by a series of public faces, including Jerry Hall, Naomi Watts and Eva Mendes, with Hunter Schafer becoming the face of the line in 2023.
Current status
Mugler is an active, globally distributed brand, but it operates as a house within L'Oréal's Luxe division rather than as an independent company. Recent activity includes the launch of the Mugler Creators Program in 2024 and the appointment of Miguel Castro Freitas as creative director in early 2025, who presented the collection "Stardust Aphrodite" at the Spring/Summer 2026 Paris Fashion Week.
