Neve Cosmetics

Neve Cosmetics is an independent Italian makeup company based in Trofarello, in the province of Turin, in the Piedmont region. It was founded in 2009 [6] and built its early identity on mineral makeup — loose pigment powders made with short, plant-based ingredient lists. The company is best known in Italy as an early online seller of mineral cosmetics and as the small brand that fought a trademark dispute with Beiersdorf, the German owner of Nivea, in 2015.

The name "Neve" is the Italian word for snow, and the brand uses the snowflake as its central metaphor: every flake differs from the next yet is equally beautiful, much as every person does. According to the founder, the choice was also rooted in place — "when we open the windows of our Trofarello facility, we see the Alps" [8]. The company remains active, selling through its own e-commerce site and a network of specialist clean-beauty retailers.

The company was established in 2009 by four partners and first set up in Moncalieri, near Turin, before moving to an industrial site on Via Enzo Ferrari in nearby Trofarello [7]. Two of the four founders are publicly identified: Marco Aghem, the chief executive, and his sister Mara Aghem, the creative and art director, who came from a background in illustration and design [7].

At launch the brand was called Trucco Minerale — Italian for "mineral makeup" — reflecting a range built entirely on loose-powder formulas [6]. It was later renamed Neve Cosmetics. The company describes its early role as a pioneer of e-commerce mineral makeup in Italy, selling online at a time when the category was distributed mainly through specialist shops.

Neve Cosmetics began with mineral eyeshadows and powder products and later widened its catalogue to lip colour, face makeup, brushes, body care and skincare. Across editorial coverage the loose mineral pigments are treated as the line that first defined the brand, while the Pastello range — jumbo pencils for lips and eyes that combine the coverage of a lipstick or liner with the format of a pencil — recurs as a signature. Other frequently cited products include the Palette Elegantissimi, a ten-shade neutral eyeshadow palette, and the Blush Garden cream blushes.

Formulas are positioned as clean and plant-derived. The company states that its products are free of silicones, parabens and petrolatum, and that the brushes use synthetic bristles rather than animal hair. It also says all of its cosmetics are vegan and vegetarian, containing no animal-derived ingredients [18], and that they are designed and made in Italy.

The brand frames itself around colour and creativity rather than coverage or correction, summed up in the tagline "Fall in love with colour." Its public manifesto sets out a small set of principles: colour as a form of emotional expression, ethics and aesthetics treated as compatible rather than opposed, original work over imitation, a refusal of animal testing, short ingredient lists, transparency about what goes into each product, and a charitable strand called Cuore di Neve.

Cuore di Neve ("Heart of Snow") lets customers nominate causes — chiefly animal-welfare groups, but also patient-support programmes — to receive donations. In one year the company reported receiving roughly 7,000 nominations and distributing 12,500 euros across five organisations [7]; one Italian account put cumulative giving at more than 130,000 euros [6].

In 2015 the company became the subject of a trademark case brought by Beiersdorf, the German multinational that owns Nivea, which alleged that the names "Neve" and "Neve Make Up" could be confused with "Nivea." A first-instance ruling by the Milan tribunal in September 2015 went against Neve Cosmetics, reasoning that both names derive from the Latin niveus / nivea / niveum, meaning "white as snow," and ordered the company to withdraw products carrying the disputed names [8]. Marco Aghem rejected the confusion argument and the company appealed.

The decision drew public pushback in Italy, where supporters framed it as a contest between a small Piedmont firm and a large foreign company. A petition opposing the ruling gathered several thousand signatures, and the hashtag #iostoconneve (also seen as #StoConNeve) circulated in the brand's defence [9]. The dispute was resolved in April 2016 through a settlement that, according to the company, protected both names while preventing confusion, allowing Neve Cosmetics to keep trading under its own name [10].

Neve Cosmetics is active. Italian corporate records list the company as operating from Via Enzo Ferrari in Trofarello, and Marco Aghem has continued to be named as chief executive in the most recent available coverage. The brand maintains its own online store alongside regional social-media accounts for markets such as Sweden and Spain, and its products are carried by clean-beauty retailers across Europe. No public sign of closure, sale or distress has surfaced.
