Summary

Overview

Nouba is an Italian makeup brand founded in Milan in 1978 by make-up artist Rosy Armanini [2]. It produces colour cosmetics across three lines — eye, face and lip products — and the company traces its identity to Armanini's encounter with the Nuba tribes of Sudan, whose use of colour in tribal celebration it describes as the seed of the brand. The name itself derives from that encounter.

The brand remains active. In 2025 it was acquired by an undisclosed international investor and appointed Mariangela Pangia as chief executive, and in early 2026 it served as official make-up partner at several Milano Fashion Week shows.

Origin & founders

According to the company, Nouba grew out of a journey Armanini took to Sudan, where she observed that among the Nuba communities "colour was Light, Emotion, Presence". Returning to Milan, she set out to make cosmetics that treated colour as a form of expression rather than simple decoration. The brand frames this as a meeting of two places: "Africa revealed the power of colour. Milan gave it method". Retailer accounts echo the same founding date and figure, describing Armanini as a make-up artist who drew on the pigments and hues she had seen and built products around intense, multi-functional colour.

Sources differ on who founded the brand. Nouba's own heritage page, Allure Italia, the company's LinkedIn profile and several retailers attribute the founding to Rosy Armanini in 1978 [2][4]. A 2018 UK beauty blog instead names make-up artist Andrea Brambilla as the founder [5]. That attribution appears to be an error: Brambilla — a pharmacist and cosmetic-science specialist — joined Nouba in 2015 rather than founding it, and the 1978 founding date is consistent across every source [2][6]. The year of founding is not itself in dispute.

History & milestones

Around 2000 the brand launched Millebaci, a long-wearing liquid lipstick that became one of its best-known products; its twentieth anniversary was marked in 2020. Nouba also presents itself as the first brand to release Terra, a loose powder bronzer intended to give a warm, sun-touched finish [6].

The arrival of Andrea Brambilla in 2015 is described by retailers as a turning point. With a background in pharmacy and cosmetic science, he enabled the company to produce its formulas in-house using newer technology rather than relying on outside manufacturers.

In 2025 the company entered what it calls a "vertically integrated industrial system" under an international investor, a change it says was intended to strengthen production capacity and financial stability while keeping Italian governance and creative control [3]. In December 2025 Mariangela Pangia was named chief executive to lead the brand's relaunch and international positioning [8].

Ownership

Nouba describes itself as an independent Italian brand. Following the 2025 acquisition it operates within a larger industrial structure backed by an undisclosed international investor; the company states that Italian governance and creative autonomy were preserved through the deal [3]. The identity of the investor and the precise terms have not been publicly disclosed. The current operating entity is listed as Nouba Group S.r.l., based in Milan, though the company has also appeared under the name Nouba By Matisse S.R.L., a discrepancy that has not been publicly clarified.

Philosophy & positioning

Nouba's positioning centres on the idea that colour carries meaning. Its manifesto states "Color is not ornament. It is Identity," and frames pigment as "knowledge something to study, master and respect" rather than a finishing touch. The company says its ambition is to "elevate colour from aesthetic effect to cultural language," presenting makeup as a means of presence, confidence and individuality. It pairs this with an emphasis on Italian craftsmanship, which it characterises as a discipline where creativity is guided by precision and material understanding. On its company profile the brand summarises the same stance as "color as identity, authenticity over perfection, and diversity".

Products & innovation

The brand's range spans eye products (pencils, eyeliners, eyeshadow and mascara), face products (foundation, concealer, bronzer, primers and powders) and lip products (lipsticks, glosses and oils). Alongside Millebaci and Terra, its line-up includes the Noubamore Second Skin and Staminal foundations and the Volumaxi sculpting mascara, the last formulated with marine-derived elastin, glycogen and collagen. Millebaci is built around what one retailer describes as "microencapsulated pigments" with no-transfer, kiss-proof wear.

Nouba emphasises Italian manufacturing, stating that every product is made on Italian soil "from lab to packaging". A UK editorial account notes that some products exclude parabens, gluten and paraffins and have undergone dermatological and ophthalmological testing [5]. On the research side, the company says its development combines Italian expertise with international work, including collaborations with Tokyo University. It reports distribution in more than 40 countries and over 2,000 points of sale worldwide [6].

Recognition & press

Nouba's 2025–2026 changes drew Italian press coverage. Allure Italia reported on the brand's new ownership and its role as official make-up partner at Milano Fashion Week A/I 2026/27, where it worked with shows including Onitsuka Tiger, Anteprima, MSGM and J. Salinas [4]. The Italian outlet iMille covered the December 2025 appointment of Mariangela Pangia as chief executive.
