Summary

Overview

Obagi Medical is a United States skincare company founded in 1988 that specialises in medical-grade, physician-dispensed products for concerns such as hyperpigmentation, dark spots, fine lines and uneven skin tone. Its range is sold largely through dermatologists, plastic surgeons and medical spas rather than ordinary retail, and the brand positions itself as a pioneer of clinical, science-backed skincare.

The company has passed through several corporate owners. It is currently held by Waldencast plc, which announced in June 2026 that it would sell Obagi Medical to the private equity firm Bridgepoint for up to $460 million, a deal expected to close in the third quarter of 2026 [10]. As of writing the brand remains fully operational, with new product launches and industry awards in 2025.

Origin and founders

Obagi Medical traces its origin to the Syrian-American dermatologist Dr. Zein E. Obagi, who grew up in Aleppo and graduated in medicine from the University of Damascus in 1972. He developed the Obagi Nu-Derm System in 1985 and, in 1988, founded the company that would carry his name, originally incorporated as WorldWide Products, Inc. (also recorded as Worldwide Products Distribution, Inc.) [8]. The stated aim was to transform the skincare industry through science-based, physician-dispensed treatments.

In 1997 Dr. Obagi sold the business to an outside investor group, staying on for a period as medical director; the company was renamed Obagi Medical Products, Inc. at that time. He later left the company, after, according to one account, his role had diminished and the firm had "strayed from his original goals". A point of record concerns the timing of his exit: Wikipedia dates his departure to 2006, while the company completed its public offering in January 2007 [8][13]. The two are treated as distinct events rather than a contradiction, his departure preceding the IPO.

The brand's own website does not name its founder or give an exact founding year, referring instead to a "30-year legacy" on one page and "35 years of expertise" on another [4]. The founding year of 1988 is consistently cited across Wikipedia and multiple business sources, and is used here as authoritative. The current Chief Medical Director is Dr. Suzan Obagi, a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, who is a different person from the founder.

A point of frequent confusion is that Obagi Medical is separate from ZO Skin Health, the later skincare company Dr. Zein Obagi founded in 2007, based in Beverly Hills, after leaving Obagi Medical [8].

History and milestones

The Obagi Nu-Derm System, developed in 1985, became the foundation of the company launched three years later. After the 1997 sale, control of the business passed to a Stonington Partners private equity fund, which took the company public; Obagi Medical Products completed a $58.9 million initial public offering in January 2007 [13]. The brand reported around 200 SKUs and more than 80 global patents by the time of later transactions, and projected net revenue of about $168 million for 2021.

Ownership

Obagi Medical's ownership has changed hands repeatedly. In 2013, Valeant Pharmaceuticals acquired Obagi Medical for about $344 million to strengthen its dermatology portfolio. Valeant sold the business in 2017 for $190 million in cash to the Haitong International Zhonghua Finance Acquisition Fund [13]. In 2021–2022, the special purpose acquisition company Waldencast Acquisition Corp. acquired both Obagi and Milk Makeup to form a multibrand beauty platform valued at a pro forma enterprise value of roughly $1.2 billion [9].

Under Waldencast, the brand continued to expand: in 2025 the group acquired Novaestiq Corp. and the U.S. rights to the injectable hyaluronic acid line Saypha under the Obagi Medical brand [14]. In June 2026, Waldencast announced the sale of Obagi Medical to Bridgepoint for up to $460 million, with founders Michel Brousset and Hind Sebti set to transition from Waldencast to lead Obagi Medical in partnership with Bridgepoint on closing [10]. The move was framed as allowing Waldencast to concentrate on Milk Makeup.

Philosophy and positioning

Obagi describes itself as a pioneer of medical-grade skincare, emphasising clinically proven results over passing trends; its tagline is "Trust Over Trends". The company says its products are built on science and tested for tolerance across all skin types and tones, and states that it was "the first skincare brand to test our products across the entire Fitzpatrick Skin Spectrum". This inclusivity message was promoted through a 2019 SKINCLUSION campaign. The brand's stated mission is, in its own words, "to transform skin health".

Commercially, the range sits in the professional, premium tier. Products are typically priced above $100 and distributed through dermatologists, plastic surgeons, medical spas and other healthcare professionals across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East [9]. Trade coverage has described Obagi as ranked number one by U.S. dermatologists and plastic surgeons, and the 2026 sale announcement noted it had been ranked the fastest-growing professional skincare brand in the U.S. in 2024 [10].

Products and innovation

The brand's signature line is the Nu-Derm System, a prescription-strength regimen whose formulations include 4% hydroquinone, described on the company's site as a strong inhibitor of melanin production used to address melasma, alongside tretinoin in several concentrations. Other established lines include the Professional-C vitamin C serums, the Elastiderm range, and Clenziderm M.D. for blemish-prone skin. More recent launches include the Nu-Gen Cellular Renewal Serum, built around NAD+ and positioned as a longevity product.

Across its formulas the brand draws on ingredients such as vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, retinoids, hydroquinone, salicylic acid and glycolic acid, and names proprietary technologies including the Nu-Derm System, Isoplentix Technology and a Bi-Mineral Contour Complex. On its professional portal the company cites figures including more than 80 patents, over 100 products tested, and more than 329 studies conducted involving over 6,000 participants.

Recognition

Obagi products have received several industry honours. The Professional-C Serum 20% was named in Allure's Best of Beauty Awards in 2025, and Elastiderm products carried NewBeauty Award seals in 2023 and 2025.

Controversies

In 2011, Dr. Zein Obagi brought a lawsuit alleging that Obagi Medical Products had engaged in anti-competitive practices against his separate company, ZO Skin Health [12]. The complaint alleged that Obagi Medical invoked non-compete clauses to prevent Canadian and European distributors from carrying ZO products and that it interfered with ZO's attempted sale to the Japanese firm Rohto Pharmaceutical. The lawsuit argued the non-compete clauses were void under California public policy. These were one party's legal claims, and the outcome is not recorded in the available sources.

Current status

Obagi Medical is an active brand operating under changing corporate ownership, classified here as acquired. It is owned by Waldencast plc, with a sale to Bridgepoint announced on 1 June 2026 and expected to close in the third quarter of that year [10]. The brand remained commercially active through 2025 and 2026, with new product launches and award recognition, and continues to be sold internationally through medical and aesthetic professionals.
