Summary

Overview

Obvious, also styled Obvious Parfums, is a French niche fragrance house based in Paris. It was founded by David Frossard and launched in November 2020 with a line of genderless eaux de parfum made in France. The house positions itself as a reaction against ostentatious, heavily marketed perfumery, pairing pared-back compositions with eco-responsible production. It remains active, with new fragrances released through the mid-2020s.

The brand's name reflects its central idea: that beauty, in its own words, "is obvious and does not need to be explained." Frossard has framed the project as a return to humbler, more essential perfumery, and the house describes its fragrances as direct and unfussy rather than ornate.

Origin & founders

Obvious was created by David Frossard, a figure with a long history in the niche fragrance trade. He studied philosophy before entering the industry through his uncle's perfume distribution company more than two decades ago. He served as export director for L'Artisan Parfumeur in 2001 and in 2005 founded Différentes Latitudes, a distribution company for independent niche brands; he is also associated with the Paris fragrance retailer Liquides Bar à Parfums [6][7].

By Frossard's account, the concept took shape after a charity tuk-tuk race in India, where he encountered plastic-covered, littered beaches. The experience led him to conclude that luxury fragrance needed to adapt to contemporary environmental concerns [7]. He has summarised the brand's purpose as a wish for perfume "to return to something more humble and more essential" [6].

The brand's own history page does not state a founding year. Multiple fragrance publications, including Nez and Tatousenti, place the launch at 15 November 2020, at Le Bon Marché and Liquides in Paris, preceded by a crowdfunding campaign that opened on the Ulule platform on 5 October 2020 [6][7].

Philosophy & positioning

Obvious frames itself as a counterpoint to what it sees as superficiality in modern perfumery. Its stated credo holds that "the world needs less superficiality and outrageous show-offs," and the house describes perfume not as "an ostentatious disguise" but as "a revealing totem" — a means of authentic self-expression rather than a façade. Frossard has linked this stance to Descartes' notion of evidence: the idea of meeting a truth without needing a complex explanation.

In editorial coverage, the company has called its work "a manifesto against the over-hyped world of perfumery," arguing that niche fragrance has itself become banal and pretentious [8]. Frossard has likened an Obvious scent to "the white t-shirt of fragrance" — simple, casual and direct [7]. The brand sells genderless perfumes, with product names that are deliberately plain, such as Un Musc, Une Rose and Un Bois.

Products & innovation

The house launched with seven inaugural fragrances composed by the Paris laboratory Flair — credited to perfumers Amélie Bourgeois and Anne-Sophie Behaghel — among them Une Rose, Une Vanille, Un Patchouli, Un Bois, Un Musc, Une Fleur d'Oranger and Un Poivre [6][7]. The line has since expanded into gourmand and food-inspired territory, with releases such as Une Pistache, Milk & Matcha, Floridita's Night and Dulce de Leche.

Its 2025 release Milk & Matcha, created by perfumer Meabh McCurtin, was presented as interpreting umami — the savoury fifth taste — in fragrance form, combining matcha's bitter freshness with milky vanilla and orange blossom [8]. The brand also produces liquid soaps, described as made in Provence using traditional Marseille soap methods [8].

Sustainability

Eco-responsibility is central to how Obvious presents itself. According to the company, its fragrance alcohol is organic and distilled from French wheat, chosen for traceability despite a higher cost, and its formulas favour natural ingredients and what it terms green chemistry, including "clean" macrocyclic musks [6][7]. The brand says its bottles contain about 30 percent recycled glass and are refillable and recyclable, with caps made from wine-cork offshoots without plastic inserts and outer packaging of recyclable paper and no cellophane [3][7].

The house frames these commitments around four principles it lists as Quality, Justesse (balance or fairness), Humility and Freedom, and says it favours short supply chains and fair pricing for suppliers committed to sustainable practices [3]. No third-party sustainability certifications are stated on its commitments page.

Current status

Obvious is active. It has continued to release fragrances through the mid-2020s, with Milk & Matcha covered by French press in May 2025 and further releases noted thereafter. The house sells directly online with worldwide shipping and, according to editorial coverage, is stocked in more than 400 sales points across 35 countries [8]. Ownership of the house has not been publicly documented beyond its founder.
