Summary

Overview

Olfactive Studio is a French niche perfume house founded in Paris in September 2011 by Céline Verleure [7]. Its defining idea is a collaboration between photography and perfumery: each fragrance begins with a contemporary photograph, which the house hands to a perfumer as their only brief. The company describes itself as "an encounter between contemporary artistic photography and perfumery; between the eye and the nose."

The house remains active and independent, shipping worldwide from France and the United States, and states that it operates in more than 30 countries [2].

Origin & founders

Céline Verleure came to Olfactive Studio after roughly two decades in the fragrance industry. She joined Kenzo Perfumes in May 1993 — by her account, the same day LVMH acquired the company — and learned the craft of perfume creation there before setting out on her own [7].

The brand's beginnings were unusually public. In 2011, Verleure launched a Facebook page called "The Blog Of The Perfume Which Doesn't (Yet) Exist" and used it to test ideas with an online audience, involving thousands of followers in the project before any product existed [7]. She has said there was no fixed business plan behind it: in her telling, the direction was settled partly by a community vote rather than a marketing strategy. The house says several thousand online fans took part in shaping the brand ahead of its launch.

Philosophy & positioning

The concept that distinguishes Olfactive Studio is its working method. A perfumer is given a single photograph and, in the house's words, "carte blanche" to interpret it — the resulting scents are presented as "Perfumer's proofs." Verleure has summarised the approach plainly: "The image is the only thing I give to the perfumers" [7]. The company frames both photography and perfume as ways to hold on to a moment and to reawaken memory.

Olfactive Studio positions its perfumes as gender-neutral, stating that "perfumes are angels; they have no gender, but they have a soul," and lists modernity, quality, generosity and inclusivity among its values. Its stated mission is "to celebrate the world's beauty through the eye and the nose." Verleure has also described a deliberately unhurried commercial pace, saying she is "not business-driven" and that a strong brand requires giving time to each country and each fragrance; historically the house has released roughly one perfume a year [7]. Fragrances are offered as eau de parfum and as higher-concentration extrait de parfum, made, according to the company, with premium raw materials.

Products & innovation

The range is organised around two main lines — eaux de parfum and the more concentrated extraits de parfum — alongside discovery kits of samples. Fragrances the house lists among its best-sellers include Autoportrait, Flash Back, Still Life in Rio, Lumière Blanche and Iris Shot. Each scent is paired with a specific photographer's image, and the brand's collaborators over the years span both well-known perfumers, among them Dominique Ropion, Olivier Cresp and Bertrand Duchaufour, and a roster of art photographers.

One of the more widely reviewed releases, Ombre Indigo, was created by perfumer Mylène Alran of Robertet around a photograph by Gustavo Pellizzon. The fragrance critic site CaFleureBon described it as "exceptionally wearable by any gender," noting that it stays translucent despite heavier notes — a reading that fits the house's own gender-neutral framing [9].

On sustainability, the company's stated commitment is modest and specific: it encourages customers to recycle empty bottles and, through a partnership with "Sommelier du Parfum," offers guidance on separating and recycling bottle components. It describes its wider engagement as participating "as much as we can in the preservation and restoration of the planet." The mission page notes no vegan or cruelty-free certifications.

Recognition

Olfactive Studio drew notice from perfume specialists early in its life; the interview site Persolaise reported that the young house had "already attracted a loyal following as well as a French FiFi award" [7]. In 2014, Lumière Blanche was named a finalist in the Indie Fragrance category of The Fragrance Foundation Awards [9].

The house was subsequently a repeat finalist at The Art and Olfaction Awards — a blind-judged, non-profit competition for independent and artisan perfumery run by the Los Angeles-based Institute for Art and Olfaction — in the Independent Perfume category for Ombre Indigo (2015), Panorama (2016) and Close Up (2017) [8].

The perfumer credits for those finalist fragrances differ between sources. Wikipedia's record of the awards attributes them to Mylène Alran as perfumer with Céline Verleure as creative director across the entries [8]. The house's own perfumers listing instead credits individual noses per fragrance — Mylène Alran for Ombre Indigo, Clément Gavarry for Panorama and Annick Menardo for Close Up — with Verleure as the consistent creative director throughout [5].

Current status

Olfactive Studio is active. As of mid-2026 its official site is operational, running a limited Rose Shot promotion and offering the full collection for worldwide shipping fulfilled from France and the United States [1]. The house presents itself as an independent perfume company; no source records a parent group, and its founder remains the public face of the brand.
