Summary

Overview

Omnimedica is a Swiss skincare and health-products company based in Schlieren, in the Canton of Zurich. It grew out of research by the pharmacist Dr. Hans E. Holzgang, whose green-tea active complex OM24 emerged in 2001, the same year the original Omnimedica AG was formed as a spin-off from that research setting [6]. Its own products are built around OM24, a standardised extract of the tea plant Camellia sinensis.

Today the business trades as OMNIMEDICA Group AG [3]. Its range spans face and body care, sun protection, oral supplements and a handful of partner brands, all organised under the motto "Believe in your cells". The company says its products are made in Switzerland, and it sells them through its own online shop as well as through pharmacies and drugstores in Switzerland and Germany [1]. Omnimedica is active, with new blog posts and updated research documentation published in 2026.

Origin & founders

The company's founder is Dr. Hans E. Holzgang, who is still listed under that title on Omnimedica's team page [5]. According to the company, Holzgang combined his training as a pharmacist with research work around ETH Zurich, the Swiss federal technical university. The question that drove him, as the company tells it, was how to make the complex protective molecules of the tea plant stable and usable in everyday products. OM24 was the answer he arrived at in 2001.

The company was not set up as a standalone cosmetics start-up. Omnimedica AG, as it was then called, was created as a spin-off from Holzgang's research environment, with the green-tea complex at its centre from the start.

Who actually owns the invention is described in two different ways on the company's own website. The more recent research page, dated 16 August 2026, says plainly that OM24 is the active complex developed by Holzgang and that OMNIMEDICA processes it under licence [6]. Other, undated pages present it differently: there, the brand is credited with developing the formula itself, and the company describes the creation of OM24 as a breakthrough achieved by Omnimedica AG in slowing cell ageing [4]. The two versions are compatible with a founder-led spin-off, but only the newer page spells out a licensing relationship.

History & milestones

The early years of the company are documented mainly through the testing of OM24. In February 2004 an outside testing firm, Derma Consult GmbH, produced a report on one of the brand's body lotions. Five years later, in 2009, researchers at the University Hospital Zurich published a placebo-controlled human study of an OM24 lotion in the journal Experimental Dermatology [6]. That paper remains the centrepiece of the company's scientific case.

Over time the company's name changed from Omnimedica AG to OMNIMEDICA Group AG, the entity entered in the commercial register of the Canton of Zurich. The product range now reaches beyond skin care into supplements and sports nutrition, alongside a selection of products from other brands.

In 2026 the company updated its research documentation, now a page dated 16 August 2026 that sets out the evidence for OM24 together with its limits. The same page carries the clarification that the company works with OM24 as a licensee.

Ownership

Omnimedica operates as OMNIMEDICA Group AG, with its registered address in Schlieren. The company is represented by its chief executive, Jörg Abel, who is named both on the team page and in the legal notice. The team page introduces him as a manager from a family with a medical background and with more than 20 years of experience running his own businesses.

No parent company or outside owner is documented, and no acquisitions are known. The company's relationship to its core ingredient is the most notable structural point: according to its own current research page, Omnimedica does not develop OM24 itself but uses it under licence from its founder [6]. The founder, a head of laboratory and a quality-assurance lead appear on the same team page as the chief executive.

Philosophy & positioning

Omnimedica builds its identity on the phrase "Believe in your cells", a trademarked motto that the company calls the heart of its philosophy. It frames health as a matter of self-empowerment and of a holistic approach, and it lists belief itself as a central part of that outlook, next to science and innovation [2]. In the company's own words, it aims for the best natural cell protection in the world and takes its inspiration from bionics, the practice of borrowing solutions from nature.

The products sit in a higher price bracket, and the company explains this openly. According to Omnimedica, its prices reflect product quality, Swiss manufacturing and the higher wages that come with producing in Switzerland.

The brand also sets out a short list of ethical commitments. It says its research is carried out without animal testing, that its products are free of gluten and lactose, and that production takes place under fair conditions in Switzerland. These are the company's own statements. No third-party certifications for cruelty-free or other ethical standards are documented.

Distribution is mixed. Besides its own web shop, the company says its products are available in pharmacies in Germany and in Swiss pharmacies and drugstores. The website also runs a product-advice assistant called Vivienne and a telephone line for personal advice.

Products & innovation

At the core of Omnimedica's own-brand products is OM24. The company describes it as a standardised natural complex of polyphenols, amino acids, trace elements and polysaccharides, extracted from Camellia sinensis through a process it developed for the purpose. According to Omnimedica, the formula is protected and patented worldwide, although no patent number is given [4]. The brand says OM24 can be used both on the skin and taken by mouth, and it markets it for skin protection, regeneration and general well-being.

The skin-care line, sold as OM24 CARE, covers anti-ageing and age-spot products, face creams, body care, peels, a serum, lip care, an anti-cellulite product and shampoo and shower gel. The serum, Novigel, contains 2 percent OM24, which the company says is the highest share among its creams. Intensive Care Skin, Eye Care, the Body Lotion, the Intensive Cream and a Sun Screen SPF30 are listed among its best-selling products. A separate sun line, OM24 SUN, sits alongside the care range.

Beyond skin care, the company sells oral products. Cell Vitalizer Tablets come in a 500 mg strength, and an OM24 SPORTS line covers concentration, recovery, energy and a whey protein. Under the heading "OM24 & Friends", the shop also carries products from other brands, including 4HAIR, Hogapharm, Indentis, Novelpharm, Speetea, Zinzino and De Moi by Demee Koch.

The company also recruits volunteers for its own product trials. One such test series invites participants to use the Intensive Cream for four weeks as a treatment for atopic dermatitis, the itchy inflammatory skin condition also known as eczema.

The OM24 name also appears outside Omnimedica's own range. The Swiss skincare company Louis Widmer, also based in Schlieren, lists "green tea extract OM24" among the active ingredients of its proderm Intensive Anti-Wrinkle Complex, describing it as a natural cell protection based on catechins [10]. Louis Widmer's product page does not name Omnimedica.

Science & innovation

Omnimedica leans heavily on research to support OM24, and its research page is unusually frank about what the studies did and did not show.

The main study is Mnich et al., published in Experimental Dermatology in 2009. It was carried out at the Dermatology Clinic of the University Hospital Zurich and the Physiological Institute of the University of Zurich, with approval from the local ethics committee, and included gene analysis at the Functional Genomics Center Zurich. Eighteen adults who completed the trial applied an OM24 lotion or a placebo over 34 days, and the response of their skin to UV light was measured. The company reports that the OM24 lotion reduced several markers of UV damage in skin cells: p53-positive cells fell by 31.9 percent on day 6 and 36.3 percent on day 34, and so-called sunburn cells fell by 38.9 percent on day 34 [6]. The brand's own summary adds that the authors found no significant reduction in UV-induced redness or in thymine dimers, a direct form of DNA damage.

An earlier report, from Derma Consult GmbH in 2004, tested the 4Protection System Body Lotion on 20 women whose skin had first been irritated with a detergent. Compared with untreated skin, the company says, the lotion lowered both water loss through the skin and redness.

Other claims rest on weaker ground. The brand states that OM24 reduces cytochrome C up to 350 times more actively than vitamin E [4], a laboratory comparison presented without study details. For the oral products, the company cites an internal sports presentation from 2024 in which 500 mg of OM24 was linked to roughly 30 percent lower levels of creatine kinase, a blood marker of muscle strain. Omnimedica itself notes that this work was not peer-reviewed and that the number of participants, the authors and the study protocol are not given.

Recognition & press

No awards are documented for Omnimedica. The company's press page lists a single item, a 2025 article from QS24.tv's Gesundheitskompass [7]. QS24.tv is a health-television channel that the brand's own website also promotes in its navigation, so the coverage is not independent editorial reporting. No coverage by major beauty or general news outlets is documented.
