Summary

Overview

Ormonde Jayne is an independent British perfume house based in London, founded by Linda Pilkington. The company was registered at Companies House in November 2000, and its boutique in Mayfair's Royal Arcade opened about a year later [2]. Pilkington still owns the house privately; according to a 2023 profile in The Week, she is the only British female perfumer to have kept her house in private hands [1].

The house is known for building fragrances around rare and unusual materials — hemlock, oudh and the Ta'if rose among them — and for a recurring "house style" that The Week describes as centred on hedione, freesia and baie rose (pink pepper). By 2023 the brand reported more than 400 international points of sale, from Mumbai to Uzbekistan.

Origin & founders

Linda Pilkington grew up in rural Cheshire, where she made beeswax candles as a child, and later travelled and worked across South America, southern Africa and the Middle East before settling in London. The brand takes its name from her middle name, Jayne, and from Ormonde Terrace, a former family address [7].

By the company's account, the business began almost by accident. A friend working for Chanel, aware of Pilkington's candle-making, commissioned her to make candles for a boutique launch; the repeat orders that followed prompted her to formalise the company. The Fragrance Foundation's profile of Pilkington records that her first invoice was to Chanel Fine Jewellery. Wikipedia adds that she invested £1,000 and studied candle-making in France before moving from wholesale into retail.

History & milestones

The founding date is recorded two ways, and both reconcile. Wikipedia, The Week and the retailer Amaris Beauty give the founding year as 2000, the year the company was registered at Companies House [7][9]. The brand's own "Our Story" dates the house to the opening of its boutique in October 2001 [1]. In practice the corporate registration came first, in November 2000, and the shop in the Royal Arcade off Old Bond Street followed roughly a year later.

Web sales began in 2002. In 2004 the house introduced Ormonde Man, which the company describes as the first fine fragrance to contain oudh [9]. The following year it launched Ta'if and made most of its collection gender-free, keeping only Ormonde Woman and Ormonde Man as gendered scents. The Week reports that this move toward gender-neutral fragrance in 2005 was initially criticised by industry peers before becoming more widely accepted [1]. In May 2018 the brand agreed a deal with Saks Fifth Avenue for a New York store. The house marked its twentieth anniversary around 2020 to 2021.

Philosophy & positioning

The company positions itself as an English house that pairs British craftsmanship with rare ingredients. In a founder's statement on its site, Pilkington describes the aim as combining "the quality of British craftsmanship, the art of French perfumery and the sensuality and natural harmony of the Orient." The house sums up its identity in three words — "Innovative. Inclusive. Inspiring." — and says it manufactures all products in its own London laboratory, where oils are infused for months before filtration and bottling. Perfumes, the company adds, are poured to high strength.

Products & innovation

The catalogue is organised into collections, including the Signature Collection and the Four Corners of the Earth range, the latter reworked as "Four Corners of the Earth Reimagined." Alongside fragrance, the house makes candles and other home and body products. The perfumer Geza Schoen collaborated with Pilkington on the fragrance line [7].

Several scents anchor the house. Ta'if is built on the Ta'if rose from Saudi Arabia; The Week reports that Pilkington travelled to the town of Ta'if to meet growers, and describes the scent as the first to use that rose attar in a fine fragrance [1]. Ormonde Woman is based on the unusual note of hemlock, while Ormonde Man was, by the company's description, the first fine fragrance to use oudh [9]. Other named fragrances include Tolu, Champaca, Montabaco, Orris Noir and Nawab of Oudh.

Recognition

Ormonde Woman and Ormonde Man both received five-star reviews in Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez's Perfumes: The Guide and were included among the book's 100 perfumery "classics" [7]. Writing in The New York Times in 2009, Chandler Burr said the collection "has managed to bottle mesmerizing strangeness that stays, just barely at times, this side of unwearable art scents" [7]. The Week's 2023 feature named Courtney Love, Emma Thompson, Goldie Hawn, Bryan Ferry, Sophie Dahl and Yasmin Le Bon among the house's regular customers.

Current status

Ormonde Jayne remains active. It is still privately owned and run by its founder, and The Week's April 2023 feature documented recent launches, including Sakura and Gatsby22, and more than 400 international points of sale [1]. The Fragrance Foundation's profile of Pilkington, current as of November 2022, cited 280 points of sale, 52 staff and a new studio opening in Kent [10].
