Summary

Overview

Orto Parisi is a niche fragrance house founded in 2014 by the perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri [7]. Its name comes from the founder's grandfather, Vincenzo Parisi, and his vegetable garden — orto is Italian for garden — and the house builds its entire identity around the idea that the human body is a kind of garden whose smells reveal the soul. The brand is generally described as Italian, reflecting Gualtieri's background and the Italian names of its scents, while its operations and laboratory are based in Amsterdam [6][8]. It remains active, with a new fragrance released in 2025 and an e-commerce store that ships internationally.

The line is small, deliberately provocative, and aimed at experienced fragrance enthusiasts rather than a mass audience. Gualtieri, who signs his work as "The Nose", built it as a separate venture from Nasomatto, the earlier house he is best known for.

Origin & founders

Alessandro Gualtieri grew up in Milan, in a family where, by his own account, raw and visceral smells were part of everyday life: his father ran a butcher shop and his grandfather kept a garden. He trained at a German institute and worked under the mentorship of an Italian expatriate, and before starting his own houses he composed fragrances for labels including Fendi, Versace and Helmut Lang, with a period working in-house at Diesel [6].

Orto Parisi grew directly out of that earlier career. Gualtieri had already established Nasomatto — Italian for "crazy nose" — and in 2014 he launched Orto Parisi as what one review described as a "theoretically separate, unrelated house", announcing it with the line "Nasomatto is dead! Orto Parisi is born!" [7]. The brand takes its emotional starting point from the founder's grandfather. In the house's biography, Gualtieri recalls how his grandfather Vincenzo "used buckets to collect both his needs that timely ended up fertilizing the garden", and dedicates the project "to those that seize the time in experiencing and diffusing the perfume of life." The founding year is not stated on the brand's own biography page; it is supplied consistently by editorial sources [7].

Philosophy & positioning

The manifesto is the core of the brand. Orto Parisi holds that the body is experienced like a garden and that its smells are "a true mirror of our soul", and its tagline states that "the parts of the body that carry more smell are those where more soul is collected." From that premise the house argues that modern life has made strong human smells unpleasant because "our innate animalism is repressed", and it sets out to create large, forceful scents that reclaim that animal side rather than mask it [7].

Gualtieri frames the venture in horticultural terms, describing it as "my garden I have planted, fertilized, cultivated, and harvested." One consequence of this stance is unusual for a fragrance brand: the composition of the scents is kept secret. According to the company's FAQ, "The Nose does not reveal the notes used in his creations", so the house publishes no ingredient lists for its perfumes.

Products & innovation

Orto Parisi's catalogue is built around a compact set of fragrances, among them Stercus, Boccanera, Terroni, Bergamask, Seminalis, Viride, Brutus, Cuoium, Megamare and Risvelium, alongside a small number of accessories. The perfumes are released in high concentrations, as extrait de parfum or pure parfum, and are positioned in the luxury end of the niche market [7].

Stercus, a woody, musky composition, was among the launch fragrances in 2014. Megamare, an aquatic scent released in 2019, became the line's most talked-about release: it drew wide attention in niche-perfume circles and a sharply divided response, with some enthusiasts praising it and others calling it unwearable, and it is often described as more approachable than the rest of the range [9]. The most recent addition, Risvelium, appeared in 2025 [11]. In keeping with the brand's policy, official note breakdowns are not disclosed for any of these.

Recognition

Boccanera was named a finalist in the Independent category at the 2015 Art & Olfaction Awards, which recognise independent and artisan perfumery [7]. Coverage of the house has appeared in specialist perfume writing, including a 2015 review on the Kafkaesque blog and a 2024 editorial profile of Gualtieri by EAU EAU. That reception has not been uniformly favourable: the Kafkaesque reviewer characterised the brand's presentation as "obnoxious marketing hype" and questioned whether the perfumes lived up to their manifesto, an assessment offered as personal opinion.

Current status

Orto Parisi is active. Its online store operates in several languages and ships to more than 40 countries, the 2025 release of Risvelium marks recent product activity, and the site carries a 2026 copyright notice [11]. Gualtieri continues to develop and release work under the name.
