Summary

Overview

Diesel is an Italian fashion house founded in 1978 by Renzo Rosso, best known beyond apparel for a fragrance line that has been licensed to and marketed by L'Oréal since 2007 [5]. The company began as an alternative denim label and grew into a broader fashion business; within beauty, its relevance rests on a catalogue of men's and women's scents built around names such as Only The Brave and Fuel For Life. Diesel remains active and operates globally, with the brand reporting more than 290 mono-brand stores across over 90 countries.

The fragrance business sits inside a larger corporate structure. Diesel is owned by OTB Group (OTB S.p.A.), the holding company built by Rosso, which also controls Maison Margiela, Marni, Viktor & Rolf and Jil Sander [4]. The scents themselves are produced under licence by L'Oréal, where Diesel is grouped with the company's prestige fragrance lines.

Origin & founders

Diesel was founded in 1978 in Molvena, a village in the Vicenza province of northern Italy, during the global oil crisis [2]. Renzo Rosso, who had begun making bell-bottomed jeans on his mother's sewing machine as a teenager, bought a 40% stake in the manufacturer Moltex using a loan from his father; he acquired full control of the Diesel brand in 1985 for around 500,000 dollars [5]. His early partner was Adriano Goldschmied, often called "the godfather of denim," who co-founded the label and remained involved until Rosso took sole ownership.

According to OTB, the name was chosen because "diesel" is an international word pronounced the same way everywhere, and the brand's long-standing slogan, "For Successful Living," has shaped its identity from the start. The company positions itself, in its own words, as "a true alternative to the established luxury market."

There is a minor discrepancy over where Diesel is based. OTB records Molvena as the 1978 founding location, while Wikipedia lists the current headquarters as nearby Breganze, in the Veneto region; both are villages in the same province of Italy [2][5].

History & milestones

Diesel grew from a denim specialist into a wider fashion company, supported by advertising that drew attention in its own right. A 1995 campaign showing two sailors kissing was described as the first major public advertisement to depict a same-sex couple kissing, appearing during the period of the United States "Don't ask, don't tell" debate.

The corporate turning point came in 2002, when Rosso built the OTB (Only The Brave) holding group around Diesel as its anchor brand [3]. Over the following years OTB expanded through stakes in and acquisitions of other fashion houses, including Maison Margiela and Viktor & Rolf.

In beauty, the modern fragrance era began in 2007, when Rosso and Diesel partnered with L'Oréal to produce the brand's first scent under the new licence, Fuel For Life [5]. Diesel had sold fragrances earlier, dating back to around 1996, but the L'Oréal partnership relaunched the line in full [10]. Only The Brave followed in 2009, introducing the fist-shaped bottle that the trade press said defined the brand's modern men's catalogue [6]. Later launches included Loverdose for women in 2011, Bad for men in 2016, and D by Diesel in 2022, which OTB marketed as "the first gender-fluid fragrance."

Ownership

Diesel is the founding brand of OTB Group, Renzo Rosso's holding company, which was established in 2002. Alongside Diesel, the group's portfolio includes Maison Margiela, Marni, Viktor & Rolf, Jil Sander and a stake in Amiri, together with the manufacturer Staff International and the childrenswear company Brave Kid. The fragrance line is not produced in-house: L'Oréal has held the licence since 2007 and continues to develop and market Diesel scents within its prestige division.

Philosophy & positioning

Diesel describes its outlook as an alternative, bold attitude rather than conventional luxury, summed up by the "For Successful Living" slogan that the company says has defined its identity since the beginning. The fragrance side carries the same tone: its men's collection is presented as an invitation to "express yourself in every single detail," pairing what the brand calls quality aromas with distinctive notes [1].

Products & innovation

Within beauty, Diesel's output is concentrated in fragrance. The line's most recognisable product is Only The Brave, whose fist-shaped bottle became its visual signature and anchored a series of flankers extending through to a new Eau de Parfum released in 2025 [9]. Other notable scents include the debut Fuel For Life, the women's fragrance Loverdose, the men's scent Bad, and D by Diesel, framed by the company as a gender-fluid release. Distribution is broad: when L'Oréal launched Only The Brave in the United States, it placed the scent in more than 3,000 retail points, from Diesel boutiques to department stores such as Macy's and Sephora.

Recognition

Diesel's advertising has been repeatedly recognised at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, where the brand won Grand Prix awards in 2001, 2007, 2009 and 2010 [5]. Its fragrance marketing has also leaned on celebrity partnerships; the 2009 Only The Brave campaign in the United States featured the hip-hop artist and actor Common [6].

Current status

Diesel is active and operates globally as a fashion house with a continuously licensed fragrance line, with new Only The Brave flankers appearing as recently as 2025. One point of clarification belongs here: in March 2019 the United States subsidiary, Diesel USA Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing store-portfolio and e-commerce difficulties. The parent company, Diesel S.p.A., was explicitly not part of that filing, and the brand has continued to operate under OTB Group [5].
