Overview
Maison Margiela is a French fashion house founded in Paris in 1988 [4]. It was started by the Belgian designer Martin Margiela as an avant-garde label built, in the company's words, on "nonconformity and the subversion of norms." Within beauty, the house is known almost entirely for fragrance: a perfume business run under licence by L'Oréal, whose Replica line became one of the most widely recognised scent collections of the 2010s and 2020s. The fashion house itself has been owned since 2002 by the Italian group OTB, controlled by Renzo Rosso [4].
Sources differ on who should be credited as founder. L'Oréal's corporate account names only Martin Margiela [3], while Wikipedia records the house as established by Margiela together with Jenny Meirens, his business partner [4]. The two accounts are not strictly contradictory; L'Oréal simply omits the co-founder.

Origin & founders
The house took shape in Paris in the late 1980s around Martin Margiela's deconstructed, anonymous approach to clothing. From the outset it presented itself as a collective rather than a designer-personality brand, a stance the company still summarises as presenting fashion "as an art of meaning rather than a cult of personality." That ethos extended to its visual signatures, including the plain white garment tags marked with circled numbers from 0 to 23, each number standing for a different product category.
History & milestones
In 2002 the business was acquired by OTB Group, the holding company led by Renzo Rosso, who also owns the Italian label Diesel. Margiela himself stepped back from creative direction in 2009, after which the house ran with an unnamed design team before John Galliano was appointed creative director in late 2014. In 2015 the label dropped "Martin" from its name, shortening Maison Martin Margiela to Maison Margiela [4]. Glenn Martens took over as creative director in January 2025.
The move into perfume came through a licensing agreement with L'Oréal, announced in 2008 and handled by the group's prestige fragrance division [5]. Trade coverage at the time framed the deal as a careful match: L'Oréal executives stressed that the designer's "intimate and personal" identity meant the usual launch playbook would not apply, and that they intended "something surprising" rather than a conventional designer scent.
The exact debut date is recorded differently across sources. L'Oréal states that the brand's first fragrance, Replica, launched in 2009 [3], and Wikipedia likewise dates the first L'Oréal collaboration to 2009 [4]. Editorial accounts draw a finer distinction: they place the house's inaugural scent, "(Untitled)," in 2010 — it made its travel-retail debut at London Heathrow in early 2011 — and date the broader Replica collection rollout to 2012 [6]. The differing years appear to describe distinct product launches rather than a genuine disagreement about a single event.
Philosophy & positioning
Across both fashion and fragrance, the house frames itself around authenticity, radicality and self-expression, describing the Maison as "devoted to uncompromising creativity" [1]. The fragrance arm translates that into an explicitly emotional, memory-driven pitch rather than a celebrity-led one. L'Oréal positions the perfumes as "quiet luxury" and describes them as refined, minimal and genderless [3]. That relatively accessible stance for a luxury label, paired with the emotional concept, helps explain the line's broad reach with younger buyers.
Products & innovation
The Replica line is the centre of the fragrance business. Its concept draws directly from a 1994 Maison Margiela clothing project that reproduced found garments complete with origin tags; the perfumes apply the same idea to scent, each one tied to a specific place and moment and intended, as the line puts it, to "replicate" everyday memories. Bottles carry names such as Lazy Sunday Morning, By the Fireplace, Beach Walk and Jazz Club, of which Lazy Sunday Morning is cited as a bestseller and Jazz Club as a cult favourite [6].
During the 2020s the collection became closely associated with TikTok's #PerfumeTok community, where reviews of individual scents circulated widely; publications including Allure and Byrdie described certain Replica fragrances as "TikTok-approved" during that period. The fragrance business has since expanded beyond eau de parfum into candles, diffusers and bath and body products from around 2020, refillable formats from 2022, and a higher-end "Fantasies" collection, with 2025 additions including Ideal One and Celestial Whisper [3].
Current status
Maison Margiela is an active global fashion house owned by OTB, with an ongoing L'Oréal-licensed fragrance business. Recent activity includes the 2025 "Fantasies" launches and the appointment of Glenn Martens as creative director in January 2025 [3].
