Summary

Overview

Viktor & Rolf is a Dutch avant-garde luxury fashion house founded in 1993 by Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren [5]. The two designers began working together after graduating from the Arnhem Academy of Art and Design (the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts) in the Netherlands, and the house is headquartered in Amsterdam. While its reputation was built on conceptual Haute Couture, its presence in beauty comes from a fragrance line that carries the same aesthetic into scent.

The perfumes are produced under a long-standing global license held by L'Oréal Luxe, and the fashion house itself is owned by the Italian OTB Group, which completed its acquisition of the full company in June 2026 [8]. The brand remains active, with current-season fashion and fragrance collections in circulation.

Origin & founders

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren met as students and formed their partnership around their 1993 graduation. According to the company, the house "aspires to create spectacular beauty and unexpected elegance through an unconventional approach to fashion." Early recognition came quickly: the pair won all three top prizes at the Salon Européen des Jeunes Stylistes in Hyères, France, in 1993. Their first Haute Couture show followed in 1998, and their first ready-to-wear collection, "Stars & Stripes," in 2000.

The house describes its identity around three phrases — "Conceptual Glamour, Provocative Couture & Unexpected Elegance" — and its work has been exhibited at institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Victoria.

Entry into fragrance

Viktor & Rolf moved into beauty through a licensing arrangement rather than in-house production. Trade publication WWD reported in April 2002 that L'Oréal had signed the designers to a global beauty deal, placing them within L'Oréal's Prestige et Collections International division, later folded into L'Oréal Luxe [7]. (A separate later account dated the signing to 2004; the 2002 announcement is the one recorded in the primary trade report.)

The first fragrance, Flowerbomb, reached the market in 2005 according to the brand's own history and The Perfume Society, which described it as an "iconic bestseller, worldwide" [6]. Wikipedia lists the fragrance's date as 2004 [5]; the discrepancy reflects an earlier formulation or introduction date against the 2005 market launch. The Perfume Society noted that Flowerbomb's "grenade-style" bottle "now graces dressing tables worldwide."

Products

The fragrance portfolio is organised around a handful of pillars. Flowerbomb, the debut women's scent, is built on floral notes including centifolia rose, jasmine, peony, freesia and vanilla, and has expanded into variants such as Pretty Peony and Extreme. The men's line centres on Spicebomb (2012), which the company frames as "an addictive and powerful explosion of spice." Other launches include the men's fragrance Antidote (2006), the women's fragrance Bonbon (2014), and the more recent Good Fortune, which the brand describes as introducing "a ritualistic sensibility, grounding luminous notes with earthy resonance."

The brand summarises the aesthetic behind Flowerbomb as "baroque yet minimal, conceptual yet glamorous," a phrasing it uses to link the perfumes back to the house's fashion sensibility.

Ownership

OTB Group, the Italian company behind Diesel, Maison Margiela and Jil Sander, built its stake in Viktor & Rolf over nearly two decades. It acquired a majority holding of 51 percent in 2008 [8], raised that to 70 percent in 2019, and completed the purchase of the remaining shares to reach 100 percent ownership in June 2026 [8]. Fragrance development and distribution have continued in parallel under L'Oréal Luxe, which the parent company states has worked on the perfumes for more than twenty years.

Controversies

Wikipedia records a content warning attached to the house's Autumn/Winter 2001–02 collection, "Black Hole," for blackface [5].
