Summary

Overview

Parfum d'Empire is a French niche perfume house founded by Marc-Antoine Corticchiato, a perfumer of Corsican descent who trained as a chemist. Most sources, including an interview with the founder, date the house to 2003 [7]; one retailer records 2002 instead [12]. The company operates from Paris and remains independent, with Corticchiato serving as its owner and sole creative lead.

The house built its reputation on a deliberately maximal style, drawing on Corsican landscapes and on raw materials whose cultural histories shape each fragrance. Its standing in niche perfumery was confirmed when it won the Fifi Award for best niche brand fragrance in two consecutive years, 2015 and 2016 [9].

Origin and founder

Marc-Antoine Corticchiato is of Corsican descent and was born in Morocco, where he grew up between his parents' citrus farms and the family home in the village of Cuttoli Corticchiato. He was a competitive show jumper from childhood before turning toward fragrance. His route into perfumery was unusual: he took a doctorate in the chemistry of fragrant plants, with a thesis on analysing plant perfume extracts using carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance, and later completed training at ISIPCA, the perfumery school in Versailles, where he went on to teach. Before starting his own house he worked in research laboratories studying aromatic plants and extraction methods, and spent time creating aromatherapy products.

Corticchiato founded Parfum d'Empire in 2003 [7][8]. He has said the name reflects a concept rather than a lineage — a choice, as he put it, to "place the senses on the throne of an empire." According to the founder, the aim was to reconnect perfume with what he calls its primary meaning across all cultures: "eroticism and the sacred." The house's first fragrance, Eau de Gloire, was inspired by the Corsican scrubland.

Philosophy and positioning

Parfum d'Empire positions itself against minimalist, mainstream perfumery. The company describes its style as physical, intrepid and baroque, and frames its signature line as "Parfums de conquête" — perfumes of conquest — built on what it calls the power of the noblest raw materials pushed to excess. In the brand's own words, "perfume is a quest, perfume is an exploration."

Corticchiato works primarily from emotions and from individual raw materials, letting a material's origin and history guide the fragrance toward a particular civilisation or theme. He has described his perfumes as "an invitation to explore the most complex and mysterious of empires: the realm of the senses" [7]. The house presents this abundance of natural materials as a rejection of what it terms "puritan and normative thin juices," balanced against a classical French sensibility and a stated commitment to creative independence. Because Corticchiato is trained as a chemist and works as his own perfumer, the company emphasises his artistic autonomy over the finished compositions.

Products

The house's catalogue spans roughly two dozen fragrances across olfactory families it groups as floral, wood and leather, amber and spice, fresh, and green and aromatic. Alongside the perfumes it produces a small range of scented candles.

Its compositions are frequently tied to specific places and materials. Corsican heritage runs through a dedicated collection, l'Héritage Corse, whose bottles carry a stylised Genoese watchtower of the kind found along the island's coasts. Individual scents are anchored in distinctive raw materials — tobacco paired with immortelle and narcissus in Tabac Tabou, Corsican mastic (lentiscus) in Corsica Furiosa, and vanilla from Madagascar in the more recent Madagascar le Baume Vanille. Other named fragrances include Ambre Russe, Cuir Ottoman, Azemour, 3 Fleurs and Le Cri, which the founder has described as a personal favourite. One scent, Mal-Aimé ("the unloved"), was created as a tribute to weeds.

The company's manufacturing draws on France and on Madagascar, where Corticchiato established an essential-oil production facility [3]. Its fragrances are sold at a luxury price point.

Recognition

Parfum d'Empire's most cited achievement is a pair of consecutive Fifi Awards from the Fragrance Foundation France, the industry's main French awards. It won best niche brand fragrance in 2015 for Corsica Furiosa, then again in 2016 for Tabac Tabou [9]. The 2016 ceremony, the 24th edition, was held at the Lido in Paris, where a panel of 24 judges assessed 340 niche entries. According to Corsican regional press, this made Parfum d'Empire the first creator brand to win the prize in two successive years, and the city of Ajaccio honoured Corticchiato for the win [10]. The house has also been the subject of editorial interviews and profiles in specialist perfume publications.

Ownership and distribution

Parfum d'Empire remains an independent house; no parent company is recorded, and Corticchiato continues as owner and creative director. Its perfumes reach an international audience through its own e-commerce and through the Paris niche retailer Jovoy, which lists the brand as an official stockist and ships to more than 70 countries, with dedicated stores noted in the United Kingdom and Qatar [11]. Editorial coverage has described a client base spanning more than 35 countries [8].

Current status

The house is active. It marked its 20th anniversary in 2023 with a release paying tribute to perfume plants, and continued to introduce new fragrances through 2025 [7]. Its most recent launches, including Madagascar le Baume Vanille, appear on its current homepage.
