Summary

Overview

Pedro del Hierro is a Spanish fashion house founded in Madrid in 1974 by the designer of the same name [1]. Best known in its home market for ready-to-wear clothing for men and women, the label also carries a licensed fragrance line, which is the part of its range that reaches Nordic shoppers. The company is no longer independent: it has operated as a sub-brand within the Spanish group Tendam, formerly Cortefiel Group, since the late twentieth century [6].

The founder, Pedro del Hierro (1948–2015), was among the designers who helped shape Spanish prêt-à-porter as an industry. Today the house continues to trade actively, showing on the Madrid Fashion Week runway and running a live e-commerce operation, while its creative direction and ownership sit within the Tendam portfolio.

Origin and founders

Pedro del Hierro was born in Madrid in 1948 and established his eponymous house there in 1974 [1]. Two early milestones marked his rise. In 1976 he was admitted to the Cámara de la Moda Española, Spain's fashion chamber, as its youngest member, and in 1981 he became the first Spanish designer to run a dedicated corner inside a major department store, adopting the retail model Ralph Lauren had introduced at Bloomingdale's [4]. The Asociación Creadores de Moda de España, the country's association of fashion creators, describes him as a pioneering designer and lists the department-store boutique as a notable moment in Spanish fashion history.

The founder died in Madrid on 3 April 2015, aged 66 [5]. The house he started has continued under new creative leadership, with Nacho Aguayo directing the women's line and Alex Miralles the menswear.

Ownership

Pedro del Hierro belongs to Tendam, the Madrid-based group known until its 2018 rebrand as Cortefiel Group, whose stable also includes Springfield, Women'secret and Cortefiel [6]. The date the brand passed fully into corporate ownership is recorded inconsistently across sources. Tendam's own brand page states it has owned the label since 1999 [6]. Other accounts place the relationship earlier: the brand's about-us page describes the designer joining Cortefiel in 1989 and the group taking ownership in 1992, and the editorial profile at luxuryfashion.com likewise dates Tendam's ownership to 1992 [8]. The most likely reading is a staged integration, beginning with the absorption of the ready-to-wear collections into Cortefiel around 1989 and ending in full consolidation by 1999.

Philosophy and positioning

The company presents Pedro del Hierro as a symbol of Spanish artisanal heritage, drawing on tradition, culture, architecture and art, and frames its output as "exclusive yet affordable luxury" for men and women [6]. The brand's about-us material quotes the founder's design creed: "My designs are always a form of expression that will help you find the best qualities of yourself." Editorial coverage has characterised the aesthetic as understated and craft-focused, built on muted tones and fine fabrics. In practice the pricing sits in mass-prestige territory rather than true luxury, with fragrances at the brand's own store running roughly €19 to €40.

Products and fragrance line

The clothing collections span tailoring, denim, knitwear, swimwear and leather goods across both menswear and womenswear. For Nordic customers, the brand is represented chiefly by its fragrances, positioned by the house as accessories that extend the founder's design signature.

The scent line has a longer history than its current licence. A first women's fragrance appeared in 2003, composed by the perfumer Alberto Morillas [16], predating the arrangement that governs the range today. Since 2015 the fragrance licence has been held by Tailored Perfumes, a company based in Gavà, near Barcelona, which describes the scents as commemorating the designer's legacy [7]. Under that licence, the perfumer Jérôme di Marino developed several releases, including Pedro del Hierro for Men (2015), Eau Fraîche (2016) and, in 2017, Le Parfum for women and the men's Intense. The men's Pour Homme serves as the fragrance line's flagship, alongside home-fragrance reed diffusers sold under the same name.

Recognition and press

Pedro del Hierro appears regularly on the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid roster, with collection presentations across recent seasons. Its parent notes the label's presence at red-carpet events tied to national and international awards ceremonies. The brand has also run a menswear collaboration with Juan Carlos Ferrero, the former world number-one tennis player and coach of Carlos Alcaraz, featured on its homepage.

Current status

Pedro del Hierro is an actively trading house owned by Tendam, and it operates as a brand within that group rather than as an independent company [6]. As of 2026 it maintains a live e-commerce site and current seasonal campaigns. Its retail footprint is reported differently depending on the source and measure: Tendam cites a presence in five countries, with close to 15 standalone points of sale and more than 170 integrated within Cortefiel stores [6], while Wikipedia's 2023 figures record 390 locations, concentrated in Spain (299), Portugal (61) and Mexico (8) [4]. The house marked its fiftieth anniversary in 2024, spanning 1974 to 2024, with a commemorative book issued through La Fábrica [17].
