Summary

Overview

Perricone MD is an American skincare and wellness brand founded in 1997 by Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a board-certified dermatologist and author [1]. The company built its identity around Perricone's theory that chronic, low-grade inflammation is the leading cause of skin aging, and it organizes its products around a "Three-Tier Philosophy" that spans diet, dietary supplements and topical skincare.

Since September 2020 the brand has been owned by the British e-commerce group THG plc (formerly The Hut Group), which acquired it for $60 million in cash [9]. It continues to trade under the Perricone MD name as part of THG's beauty portfolio.

Origin & founders

Perricone MD grew out of the clinical and research work of Dr. Nicholas Perricone, born in 1948 in Branford, Connecticut [7]. A dermatologist who trained at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, he became known for arguing that diet, supplements and topical products together could slow the visible effects of aging. According to the company, his research identified "chronic, sub-clinical inflammation as the single greatest cause of aging," which became the founding idea of the brand and its Three-Tier Philosophy [1].

Perricone was also a prolific author. In 1998, the year after founding the brand, he published The Wrinkle Cure, a New York Times bestseller that introduced his approach to a wider audience; he followed it with further bestselling titles. He has been described as the "father of the inflammation theory of aging" [7].

Ownership

Perricone MD passed through several owners before its current one. It was held by the private-equity firm TSG Consumer Partners, which sold its stake to Lion Capital in 2014 [9]. In September 2020, THG plc acquired the company outright from Lion Capital for $60 million in cash — a deal that trade press valued at roughly one times continuing sales, with the brand reported as profitable at the time of sale [9]. THG, which also owns the beauty retailer Lookfantastic, folded Perricone MD into its digital-first operations; the retailer had already been a long-running sales channel for the brand [8].

Philosophy & positioning

The brand's central premise is the Three-Tier Philosophy, which frames beauty as something achieved "from the inside-out and outside-in" [1]. Its three tiers are an anti-inflammatory diet, nutritional supplements, and topical skincare, and the company presents these as a single connected system rather than standalone products. Perricone MD positions itself as science-led, using the tagline "science-backed skincare solutions" and citing clinical and consumer testing behind its formulas. For its topical range, the company says that "70+ clinical studies provide objective proof of efficacy, while 100+ consumer tests show how each formula performs in real routines, on real skin" [3].

The line sits in the prestige price bracket. One reviewer, testing the Cold Plasma Plus+ Essentials Regimen priced at $529, noted the expense while reporting visible results [10].

Products & innovation

Perricone MD's catalogue centres on a small number of hero ingredients that recur across collections, several of which the brand treats as proprietary. Chief among them is Vitamin C Ester, a fat-soluble compound combining L-ascorbic acid and palmitic acid that the company describes as "non-acidic and, therefore, completely non-irritating." Other signature actives include Alpha-Lipoic Acid, DMAE, and Acyl-Glutathione — a patented, fat-soluble form of glutathione intended to improve absorption and stability.

The Cold Plasma Plus+ collection is the brand's flagship line, marketed for visible signs of aging across the face, eyes, neck, chest, arms and shins. Its Advanced Serum Concentrate, built on what the company calls its "best-selling formula," combines Copper Tripeptides, Vitamin C Ester and Omegas 3, 6 and 9. Other well-known ranges include the Vitamin C Ester and Neuropeptide collections, the latter promoted around a so-called "Beauty Molecule." At acquisition, the brand was reported to hold approximately 100 product patents [8]. Individual products carry cruelty-free and vegan claims, and the brand states that formulas such as the Cold Plasma Plus+ serum are free from ingredients including fragrance, sulfates, parabens, phthalates and mineral oil [6].

Controversies

Perricone's scientific claims have drawn sustained criticism. Commentators associated with the science-based-medicine movement, including Harriet Hall and Stephen Barrett, have characterised his writings as containing many claims that are "questionable, controversial, fanciful, unsupported by published evidence, or just plain wrong" [7]. Critics have argued that much of his supporting research has not been published in peer-reviewed medical journals and that some promotional promises are exaggerated. The brand and its founder have continued to position the products as clinically tested.

Current status

Perricone MD remains active and, since 2020, operates as an acquired brand within THG plc rather than as an independent company [9]. Its e-commerce site continues to sell current collections such as Cold Plasma Plus+ and the Neuropeptide range, and the brand maintains an active blog and social channels. Ownership sits with THG, but the products are still sold under the original Perricone MD name.
