Summary

Overview

Christophe Robin is a French haircare brand founded in Paris in 1999 by the celebrity hair colourist of the same name [5]. It built its reputation on scalp-focused, highly concentrated formulas made with natural-origin ingredients, first developed for the founder's salon clients before reaching a wider consumer market. The brand remains active and is sold internationally; since April 2019 it has been owned by the British group THG (The Hut Group).

Although the company carries its founder's name, Christophe Robin himself left the business in early 2020, and the brand has operated independently of him since a 2021 repositioning [6].

Origin & founders

Christophe Robin trained as a hair colourist and opened his first Paris salon, dedicated to colour and treatment, in 1995 at the age of 24 [8]. His salon work drew a roster of high-profile clients, and over the following years he became closely associated with the looks of figures such as Catherine Deneuve, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Tilda Swinton and Kylie Minogue [8].

The consumer brand grew directly out of that salon practice. According to the company, Robin first created his formulas for his celebrity clients and only later launched them as a retail range, beginning in 1999. From the outset the products were positioned around the idea of formulas that are, in the brand's words, "highly concentrated yet gentle" and built on "precious natural-origin ingredients."

History & milestones

The retail range launched in Paris in 1999 and expanded over the following two decades into a catalogue spanning shampoos, conditioners, masks, scalp scrubs, leave-in treatments and colour-care products.

In April 2019, the company was acquired by THG, the e-commerce group formerly known as The Hut Group; trade press reported the deal at more than 60 million US dollars, against roughly 17 million dollars in 2018 sales [5][6]. Robin remained associated with the brand only briefly afterwards, exiting around the start of 2020 [6].

In September 2021 the company carried out a significant rebrand, described by trade publication Glossy as a move "beyond founder" toward brand-focused messaging [6]. The change replaced the earlier French-luxury aesthetic with matte white packaging and pastel colour-coded lids, introduced lower price points, and accompanied an expansion of direct-to-consumer sales, which the brand put at around 40% of its global total at the time.

Ownership

Christophe Robin's parent company is THG (The Hut Group), which acquired it in April 2019. A note in the project's research had hypothesised possible ownership by L'Occitane; this was not borne out. Verification across the THG press release and trade coverage identified THG as the controlling acquirer of record, with no L'Occitane ownership found [5]. THG also distributes the brand through its own retailer, Look Fantastic, alongside third-party stockists.

Philosophy & positioning

The company positions itself as a professional, scalp-led haircare brand, presenting scalp health as integral to hair health and applying what it calls "skincare-inspired solutions that work by naturally rebalancing the skin." Its stated mission is to bring out the best in every hair type by delivering instant results and lasting benefits, summarised in the tagline "Beautiful hair, made effortless, everyday."

At the time of the THG acquisition, the brand's products were described as formulated with over 80% natural ingredients and free from parabens, silicones, SLS, oxidants and ammonia, and as not tested on animals [5].

Products & innovation

The catalogue is organised into benefit-based regimens — among them Purifying, Volumizing, Regenerating, Hydrating and Colour Shield — and draws on natural-origin hero ingredients including sea salt, prickly pear oil, aloe vera, rose extract, camu-camu berries and white lotus flower.

Its best-known product is the Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt, a scalp scrub that became one of the brand's signatures. The Zoe Report characterised it as a haircare discovery that "spurred the creation of many others" in the scalp-scrub category, and noted that Emily Weiss had championed it on Into The Gloss in 2014, describing herself as "head-over-heels in love" with it [7]. Other recurring products include the Regenerating Mask with Prickly Pear Oil, a Volumizing Shampoo, and the Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower.

Recognition

Several individual products have received editorial awards. The Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt was named to WWD's "100 Greatest Beauty Products of All Time" (cited for both 2025 and 2026) and won a Marie Claire award for Best Scalp Treatment in 2025 [4]. The Volumizing Shampoo took a Byrdie Beauty Award for Best Volumizing Shampoo in 2024, and the Night Recovery Cream was selected by CNN Underscored among its Best Overnight Beauty Products the same year [4].

Current status

Christophe Robin is an active, globally distributed brand, sold in around 35 countries through retailers including Sephora, Space NK and Look Fantastic [6]. It is owned by THG and operates independently of its founder following his early-2020 departure and the 2021 rebrand [6]. Continued editorial recognition through 2024–2026 reflects ongoing activity.
