Summary

Overview

Phuong Dang is a niche perfume house founded in 2016 by the Vietnamese-born artist of the same name, who conceived fragrance as an extension of her fine-art practice [6]. Trained as a visual artist rather than a perfumer, she built the line around collaborations with established noses and launched it exclusively at Barneys New York. The brand remains active and sells directly through its own site, though its fragrance releases have slowed markedly since the 2016 debut.

The founder was born in Vietnam and holds a Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London. Editorial coverage places her base in Singapore [8]; the brand's own pages do not state a headquarters, noting only that it operates across North America, Europe and the Middle East. An early project brief had suggested Germany as the base, but that appears to reflect a sales market — a Phuong Dang scent was covered in the German edition of GQ — rather than where the founder is located.

Origin and founders

Phuong Dang worked as a mixed-media artist, known for sculptural paintings shown internationally, before turning to perfume. According to the company, she had long made custom scents privately alongside her visual work and came to treat fragrance as "another invisible medium" for artistic expression. Her stated view of the form is that "scents are the ultimate mysteries that hold not only our reflections of the past, our moods and feelings in the present, but also our dreams for the future."

With no formal training in perfumery, she approached the perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour directly, sending what trade coverage described as a blind letter with her artwork and ideas [6]. Duchaufour agreed to the project and went on to develop nine of the first ten scents; the tenth, Raw Secret, was created by Marina Jung Allegret [6].

History and milestones

The namesake collection launched in September 2016, sold exclusively at Barneys New York — the department store closed in 2020 — and comprised ten scents alongside a line of candles [6]. The perfumes were released as extraits de parfum, the most concentrated form, and priced in the luxury range: roughly $300 to $450 for a 50-millilitre bottle, rising to $450 to $650 at 100 millilitres [6]. Bottles were hand-finished by a French master glassmaker to the founder's minimal, sculptural designs.

The catalogue expanded over the following years, with the fragrance database Fragrantica recording releases such as Omen in 2018 [10]. In 2022 the house released Artist, described by specialist critics as the first fragrance jointly composed by Duchaufour and Mark Buxton, a perfumer whose past work spans houses including Givenchy and Cartier [7]. Artist was later named a finalist for the Fragrance Foundation's FiFi Award for Indie Fragrance of the Year.

Philosophy and positioning

The house presents perfume as wearable art rather than conventional fragrance, and its scents are positioned as genderless — catalogued for "women and men" and marketed without a fixed gender. Reviewing Artist, one specialist outlet framed the openness deliberately: whether the scent reads as masculine or feminine, woody or ambery, it invited readers to "decide for yourself" [7]. The compositions draw on rare and animalic raw materials characteristic of niche perfumery; L'Eclipse, an extrait by Duchaufour, is built on a base the brand describes as "inky" and animalic, layering oud, amber, civet and patchouli.

Products and innovation

Phuong Dang's range runs to roughly a dozen extraits de parfum, among them L'Eclipse, Artist, Obscure Oud, Leather Up and Raw Secret. Several names — Obscure Oud, Untamed Oud, Leather Up — signal the oud and leather territory the house favours. The perfumer roster across the catalogue comprises Bertrand Duchaufour, Marina Jung Allegret and Mark Buxton.

Recognition

Beyond the FiFi finalist nod for Artist, the line drew wide fashion and lifestyle press from its launch onward, including WWD, The New York Times and its T Magazine, Allure, Harper's Bazaar, The Hollywood Reporter, Town & Country and Refinery29. WWD covered the Barneys debut and later included the brand in its "Launchpad" round-up of niche fragrance [12].

Current status

The brand is treated as active: its site remains live and sells directly, and the founder also runs a personal-transformation practice under the same name. Its most recent catalogued fragrance is Artist from 2022, and the site carries a 2023 copyright line, so while the house continues to trade, its launch cadence has slowed considerably since the concentrated activity around the 2016 debut.
