Overview
Playboy is an American media and lifestyle company founded in Chicago in 1953 by Hugh Hefner [3]. It began as a men's magazine and grew into a broad licensing business, lending its rabbit-head name to apparel, accessories, lingerie and a range of consumer products [4]. Within beauty, Playboy is present mainly through a licensed fragrance line rather than an in-house cosmetics operation: the name has appeared on perfume and deodorants for decades under a series of outside manufacturers.
The company remains active. Its corporate parent, PLBY Group, is a publicly traded firm listed on Nasdaq, and the fragrance line is currently produced under licence by the UK company SA Designer Parfums, which took over the rights in 2018 [5].

Origin & founders
Playboy magazine launched in Chicago in 1953, funded in part by a US$1,000 loan Hefner raised partly from his mother. The first issue, dated December 1953, featured Marilyn Monroe and helped establish the title quickly; circulation later peaked at around seven million in the early 1970s. Over the following decades the business expanded well beyond publishing into clubs, television and an extensive merchandising and licensing operation built around the brand and its logo.
Ownership
The company was originally incorporated as Playboy Enterprises, Inc. [4]. In 2011 Hefner took the business private, and in February 2021 it returned to public markets as PLBY Group through a reverse merger, trading on Nasdaq under the ticker PLBY. According to the company, its licensed products generate more than US$3 billion in global sales across more than 180 countries, spanning apparel, accessories, footwear, lingerie, jewellery, fragrances and home goods [4]. Beauty and grooming is one of its business segments, though a comparatively small one.
Sources give different headquarters locations, reflecting the company's relocations over time. The Wikipedia article on PLBY Group records the most recent move, listing Miami Beach, Florida as the headquarters from 2025 [4], while the article on Playboy cites a prior base in Beverly Hills, California [3]. Earlier still, the company was headquartered in Chicago and then Los Angeles.
Products & innovation
Playboy's beauty presence centres on fragrance, which the company handles through licensing rather than manufacturing itself. The line's history runs through several rights holders. Playboy first moved into fragrance around 1990 in a partnership with EHP, and the licence was later held by Milton-Lloyd, which extended distribution into the Middle East and Asia [11]. In 2008, Coty Inc. took on the licence and launched a new global men's fragrance line under the Playboy name [6]. Coty went on to produce some twenty Playboy fragrances over roughly a decade before stepping back from celebrity and lifestyle licences as part of a wider portfolio restructuring.
In 2018, SA Designer Parfums acquired the Playboy fragrance licence from Coty and became the current producer [5]. The line was relaunched in 2023 with a new set of fragrances and now spans eau de toilette, body sprays, body mists and related formats. On its brand page, the licensee frames the range around confidence and self-expression, describing it as aimed at a younger, Gen-Z audience [7]. Separately, the magazine's beauty crossovers have included a limited-edition collaboration with MAC Cosmetics tied to Playboy's 50th anniversary in 2004 [3].
Current status
Playboy is an active company. The parent, PLBY Group, continues to operate as a listed media and lifestyle business, and the fragrance line remains in the market under SA Designer Parfums following the 2023 relaunch, sold across mass and drugstore channels internationally.
