Summary

Overview

Porsche Design is a German lifestyle brand and product design studio founded in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the original Porsche 911 [5]. Legally organised as Porsche Lifestyle GmbH & Co. KG, it applies a functionalist design approach across categories that range from watches and eyewear to writing instruments and electronics. Its fragrance and bodycare line, the subject most relevant to beauty retail, is not made by the company itself but produced under a separate licence.

The brand remains active. Its most recent fragrance, Pure Life Eau de Parfum, was released in April 2024, and earlier scents such as Pure 22 continue to be sold through perfumery retailers.

Origin and founders

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (1935–2012), grandson of the company's founder, created the design that became the Porsche 911 before turning to independent product design. In 1972 he founded Porsche Design in Stuttgart, according to the company, "driven more by the need to create than a promising business model" [3]. The aim was to carry Porsche's design principles beyond cars into everyday objects.

Two years later, in 1974, he moved the design studio to Zell am See, Austria — a return, in the company's telling, to his childhood home [5]. That studio was renamed Studio F. A. Porsche in 2015 in his memory, and it remains part of the Porsche group.

Ownership

The current legal company, Porsche Lifestyle GmbH & Co. KG, was formed in November 2003 as a majority-owned subsidiary of Porsche AG [5]. The fragrance and bodycare line operates differently: it is a licensed extension rather than an in-house product. The licence for creating and distributing Porsche Design fragrances was held by the Clarins Fragrance Group until April 2014, when the two parties ended the agreement by mutual consent [2]. Porsche Design then appointed the UK company Designer Parfums, part of the Shaneel Enterprises Group, as its new fragrance licensee and distributor [2].

Sources differ on where the company is based, because different parts of the organisation sit in different places. Wikipedia records the corporate headquarters as Ludwigsburg, Germany [5], while the design studio has its own headquarters in Zell am See, Austria [4]; the brand itself was originally founded in Stuttgart.

Philosophy and positioning

Porsche Design follows a form-follows-function philosophy. The company reduces form to essentials and derives it from purpose, summarised in a line attributed to its founder: "If you analyze the function of an object, its form often becomes obvious" [3]. It states that it does not think in large volumes, instead using high-quality materials with limited regard for the costs of industrial production. The brand's stated values centre on functionality, reduced design, quality and durability, captured in the tagline "Form and function in perfect harmony" [6]. The Moodie Davitt Report described the fragrances as being sold under "the Porsche Design luxury brand" [2].

Products and innovation

The fragrance line began in 2008 with The Essence, the brand's first scent [2]. It was followed by The Essence Intense, Porsche Design Sport, Porsche Design Sport L'Eau and Titan [2]. More recent releases include Pure 22 Eau de Parfum, launched in 2022 with perfumer Maïa Lernout, and Pure Life Eau de Parfum, released for men in 2024 and created by Marine Ipert. Current lines also include the 180 range of eau de toilettes, the Woman line and Ruby, alongside bodycare items such as hair-and-body shampoo and bath-and-shower gel.

A consistent thread across the fragrances is presentation: the bottles are designed by Studio F. A. Porsche, extending the design house's approach to the scent line it does not manufacture itself.

Current status

Porsche Design is an active company and design house, and its fragrance line remains in circulation. The most recent launch, Pure Life, was made available at perfumery specialists and select Douglas branches from 15 April 2024 [7]. Because the scent line is produced under licence, its continuity depends on the licensee, Designer Parfums, rather than on Porsche AG directly.
