Ramon Monegal

Ramon Monegal is an independent niche perfume house based in Barcelona, Spain. It was created by the Spanish perfumer of the same name, born in Barcelona in 1951, who belongs to the fourth generation of a family long established in Spanish perfumery. Sources place the brand's beginnings around 2009, the year Monegal launched his first collection under his own name [6]; the Perfume Society records the house as "established in Barcelona in 2007," while noting that he was "finally launching his first collection in 2009" [7]. The operating company is registered as Monegal Perfumes S.L. in Barcelona [5].

The house is known for literature-inspired fragrances presented in a bottle modelled on an antique inkwell, a design Monegal created himself to reflect his interest in writing.

Ramon Monegal is the great-grandson of Esteve Monegal i Prat, whose Barcelona drugstore developed into Myrurgia, founded in 1916 and a supplier to the Spanish Royal House [6]. Monegal trained as a perfumer from 1972 at the family firm and continued his studies in Geneva under Artur Jordi Pey of Firmenich, in Grasse with Marcel Carles, and in Paris with Pierre Bourdon. He had initially studied architecture before turning to perfumery.

He worked at Myrurgia for more than three decades as a fragrance creator, developing scents for labels including Adolfo Domínguez, Antonio Miró, Don Algodón and Massimo Dutti [6]. His first successful fragrance for the company dates to 1979. After the Spanish group Puig acquired Myrurgia in 2000, Monegal left conventional industry work, and in 2009 he launched his own brand in Barcelona [6].

Monegal treats perfumery as a form of writing, composing each fragrance himself as an olfactory story drawn from nature and literature. He has described his method as turning "words into notes, phrases into chords, stories into compositions, and the ink into imagined perfume." According to the company, its core statement reads: "Perfume precedes presence and lingers on in absence."

Central to the house's positioning is the idea that creative independence is a precondition for the work. Monegal holds that perfume "can only rise to the level of art when accompanied by an absolute freedom" unconstrained by commercial considerations [7] — a principle he links to his decision to leave the corporate industry and work under his own name.

The house composes across several fragrance collections, among them a Spanish-themed line, a musks range and a group of oud-based scents. Its Flamenco fragrance is built around raspberry, violet and orange blossom, and is extended into related products such as a hair mist and a hand cream. Fiesta was created to mark the family's centenary in perfume, a reference to Myrurgia's 1916 founding. Alongside personal fragrance, Monegal produces home scents including scented candles, room sprays and diffusers under its Atmospheres line. Wikipedia describes the catalogue as having grown to more than sixty perfumes since the 2009 launch [6].

In 2012 Monegal published a book, La Perfumista, with Editorial Planeta [6]. The Perfume Society profiles him as a fourth-generation master perfumer from one of Spain's most prominent perfume families, working in a literature-inspired, niche idiom [7], and Wikipedia notes the description of him as "the architect of scent" [6].

The brand remains active. Its collections are currently sold online with listed prices, and it continues to release new work and collaborations, including a Mon Égal project with the Paris perfumery Jovoy.
