Summary

Overview

Révive is an American luxury skincare brand founded in 1997 by Dr. Gregory Bays Brown, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon based in Louisville, Kentucky [5]. The company builds its products around epidermal growth factor (EGF), a cell-signalling molecule first studied for healing burn wounds, and positions itself as a science-driven, anti-aging line. Since October 2024 it has been owned by the Chinese conglomerate S'Young Group, which acquired it from the private-equity firm Tengram Capital Partners [8].

The brand still trades and continues to operate independently under its founder, but its ownership has changed hands several times over its history. Most sources, including the brand's own site, date the launch to 1997 [1]; the retailer Bluemercury has instead described the brand as roughly 25 years old as of 2025, implying a 1999 start [7]. The brand site's 1997 date is the more consistently repeated figure.

Origin and founders

Dr. Brown trained as a plastic surgeon and, according to the company, joined Harvard Medical School in 1974 before founding the Skin Bank of the University of Louisville Hospital in 1984. His route into skincare began with reconstructive work rather than cosmetics: he was researching how epidermal growth factor could speed the recovery of burned skin when he considered whether the same molecules might act on aging skin. In 1989 he published a study on EGF's ability to promote the recovery of damaged skin in The New England Journal of Medicine [3].

To source the growth factors, Brown partnered with William Rutter, the founder of the early biotechnology company Chiron Corp., later acquired by Novartis [5]. Trade coverage records that his first working formulation was improvised by dissolving growth factors into an existing Elizabeth Arden cream. In 1994 he received a patent for the underlying anti-aging skincare technology and made a first cream for patients in his private practice [1]. Révive itself launched three years later, entering the American department store Neiman Marcus in 1997.

History and milestones

The brand's early identity rested on a single high-priced product sold through a luxury retailer, and it expanded from there into a full anti-aging range. Its signature launches include the Moisturizing Renewal Cream — the founder's original formula, built on a bio-renewal protein and glycolic acid — and the Peau Magnifique Youth Recruit Renewal System, introduced at $1,500 and described in trade press as the brand's most expensive product. Accounts of the first cream's timing differ slightly: the brand ties it to the 1994 patent and private-practice gifting [1], while a 2022 press release states the original Moisturizing Renewal Cream Nightly Retexturizer launched in 1996 [6].

Révive marked its 25th anniversary in 2022 with new products and the appointment of brand ambassadors. In 2026 the company introduced what it calls its RVGF Technology, alongside three new proprietary peptides aimed at texture, volume and firmness.

Ownership

Révive has passed through several owners since its founding. In 2008 it was acquired by Gurwitch Products, part of Alticor, which also owned Laura Mercier; both brands were bought by the Japanese group Shiseido in 2016 [5]. In 2017, Tengram Capital Partners purchased Révive from Shiseido, with Dr. Brown reinvesting in the business [5]. Tengram held the brand for seven years before selling it, on 16 October 2024, to S'Young Group, a Changsha-based Chinese conglomerate; the financial terms were not disclosed [8]. According to the company, chief executive Elana Drell Szyfer stated that Dr. Brown and the management team would keep their roles and that Révive would maintain independent operations after the sale.

Philosophy and positioning

Révive presents itself as a science-driven, anti-aging brand and frames its work as applying Nobel Prize-inspired growth-factor science to skincare. The founder's stated view is that lasting results need not come from surgery: "the true source of beauty is not always lifts, nips, or tucks," Dr. Brown has said, arguing that supporting the skin's own capacity to renew is the more durable route. The brand sits at the luxury end of the market and has historically been sold through prestige department stores including Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Products and innovation

The brand's formulas center on epidermal growth factor and a set of bio-engineered peptides, marketed under names such as the RV Renewal, RV Volumizing and RV Firming peptides. Its range is organised into collections addressing specific concerns — Renewal for texture, Intensité for loss of volume, Fermitif for firmness and Lissant for lines, among others. The company describes its RVGF Technology as a system meant to protect the stability of its three peptides and direct them to specific protein targets, and it states that its peptide technology is clinically tested. Révive says it does not test its products on animals [4].

Current status

Révive remains an operating US luxury skincare brand. Its status is best described as acquired: since October 2024 it has been owned by S'Young Group, though it continues to trade independently under founder Dr. Gregory Bays Brown and chief executive Elana Drell Szyfer, and it introduced a technology relaunch in 2026 [8]. Trade reporting placed the brand's sales at roughly $15 million in 2017, growing to about $30 million by 2022.
