Summary

Overview

Rilastil is an Italian dermocosmetic skincare brand founded in Milan in 1972 [5]. It belongs to the Istituto Ganassini di Ricerche Biochimiche, the research-driven pharmaceutical and cosmetics group established in the same city in 1935 [6]. The brand's central idea is to apply the methods of the pharmaceutical industry to everyday skincare, and its products are distributed largely through pharmacies. Its name comes from the Italian verb ri-elasticizzare, "to re-elasticize," a reference to the skin-elasticity concerns its first product set out to address.

The company positions itself as a leader in the dermatocosmetics sector, describing its work as transferring scientific know-how into rigorously tested products suited to all skin types. Rilastil remains active, with a current catalogue, a live e-commerce site and distribution the parent group reports across more than 90 countries [5].

Origin and founders

Rilastil emerged from the laboratories of the Istituto Ganassini, whose own history is usually traced to Professor Domenico Ganassini di Camerati and his interest in chemical and biochemical research. He formally established the institute in Milan in 1935 [6]. The Rilastil brand followed several decades later, in 1972, when — according to the Ganassini group — the knowledge and methods of the pharmaceutical industry were applied to skincare for the first time within the company.

Sources differ on which member of the Ganassini family is meant when Rilastil's founder is named, because grandfather and grandson share the name Domenico Ganassini di Camerati. The brand's own history page describes Domenico Ganassini di Camerati as a professor of chemistry, a detail that fits the institute's founder [2]. The Ganassini group page instead credits the 1972 creation of Rilastil to Dr. Domenico Ganassini di Camerati, the founder's grandson and the group's current chairman [6]. The founding year of 1972 is consistent across the sources; the ambiguity concerns which generation.

History and milestones

The brand launched in 1972 with a stretch-mark cream, sold in Italian as Smagliature — the product that gave Rilastil its name and its initial focus on skin elasticity [2]. From that starting point the range broadened over the following decades into a broad dermocosmetic catalogue spanning facial care, body care, sun protection and a small makeup line.

Rilastil opened a headquarters in Barcelona in 2012, part of a wider international expansion. In 2022 the brand marked its 50th anniversary [6].

Ownership

Rilastil is owned by the Istituto Ganassini di Ricerche Biochimiche, the Milan-based Ganassini group [6]. The group traces its research roots to the 1930s and today holds a portfolio of skincare and cosmetics brands alongside Rilastil, including Vitamindermina, Bioclin, Korff, Compagnie de Provence and The Organic Pharmacy, built up through both in-house launches and acquisitions. The group reports eight direct subsidiaries and distribution in more than 90 countries.

Philosophy and positioning

Rilastil's stated mission, in the words of the parent group, is to bring "the qualities of a pharmaceutical company to the cosmetic industry, ensuring consumer well-being and safety" [5]. The company frames its products as science-led solutions to specific skin concerns — among them sensitivity, acne, loss of firmness, dehydration and the appearance of ageing — rather than as general cosmetics. Its slogan, "the real formula for real skin," reflects that clinical, problem-solving emphasis.

Distribution is built around pharmacies, and the parent group describes the brand as a reference point for consumers, doctors and pharmacists internationally.

Products and innovation

The stretch-mark cream that launched the brand in 1972 is described by a company-linked source as having become "a true icon in the Italian dermocosmetic scenario" [7]. Later signature products include the RCUBE remodelling and restructuring cream, built around a proprietary complex the brand calls RCube together with essential amino acids; the Sun System Water Touch facial sun fluid; and the Multirepair serum line featuring hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and S-Ferulic. Recurring ingredients across the range include hyaluronic acid, ceramides, shea butter, vitamin C and panthenol.

Consistent with its pharmaceutical framing, Rilastil places considerable emphasis on product testing. The company says its formulas are screened for trace metals — nickel, chromium, cobalt, mercury and palladium — to limits below one part per million, using equipment able to detect down to one part per billion [3]. It also describes dermatological patch testing, microbiological testing to European Pharmacopoeia standards, and a repeated-insult patch test used to support its hypoallergenic claims [3]. These are presented by the company as internal testing protocols rather than formal third-party certifications.

Sustainability

Rilastil frames environmental responsibility as an ongoing process. On packaging, the company says it prioritises recyclable materials, FSC-certified paper from sustainably managed forests, aluminium, plant-derived "Green PE" and recycled R-PET plastic [4]. In its formulas, it states that it excludes or minimises certain ingredients on environmental grounds, including water-soluble UV filters, EDTA chelating agents, some silicones and the harsher surfactants known as SLES and SLS. The company also acknowledges that supply-chain limits sometimes prevent it from using its preferred sustainable materials across every new packaging line.
