Overview
Rosendo Mateu is a Spanish niche fragrance house based in Òrrius, near Barcelona, and operated by the company PRFM Olfactive Expressions S.L. [4] It was created by the perfumer Rosendo Mateu (1945–2022) together with his son Joan, and it carries the founder's name across a line of numbered unisex fragrances. The house sells chiefly perfume, alongside a smaller hair-care line and discovery sets, through its own online shop and a network of niche fragrance retailers.
The brand remains active. Its founder died in May 2022 [8], but the business has continued under Joan Mateu as company manager, with new releases appearing as recently as 2024.

Origin and founders
Rosendo Mateu spent most of his career at the Spanish group Puig, which he joined in 1968 and where, according to the brand, he worked for around 45 years [2]. He was appointed a Master Perfumer at Puig in 2010, a title the company describes as reserved for an elite circle of European perfumers. Over those decades he trained in Grasse at the Roure School (later Givaudan) under Marcel Carles, in Geneva under Arturo Jordi Pey at Firmenich, and in Paris under Max Gavary at IFF.
The independent house grew out of a collaboration between Mateu and his son Joan, who had trained at Givaudan in New York and came from a background in technical architecture and content creation. The company frames itself around this partnership, using the line "our business is our family" to describe a model in which the founder and his son personally oversaw the design and packaging of each scent. Joan Mateu is described as co-founder of the venture and the developer continuing the line.
Exactly when the house began is recorded inconsistently, including on the brand's own website. Its team page dates the personal collection to a 2015 launch in Spain with four numbered fragrances; the homepage states the first fragrances were made in 2014; and the founder's biography page gives a 2017 launch [2]. Third-party coverage largely reconciles these: the perfumer began work on the collection in 2014, launched four fragrances in Spain at the end of 2015, and expanded the range to five in 2017, the year several sources treat as the debut. One editorial profile that places the founding in 2010 appears to have conflated it with the year Mateu became a Master Perfumer.
History and milestones
Mateu's reputation was built long before his own label. During his years at Puig he created a number of well-known Spanish men's fragrances, including Agua Brava (1968), Brummel (1975) and Quorum (1981) [11], and he composed scents for houses such as Carolina Herrera, Paco Rabanne, Nina Ricci and Antonio Banderas. Beauty Cluster, a Spanish industry association, wrote after his death that he had "developed some of the most iconic perfumes in the sector" during his time at the group [8].
After decades in corporate perfumery he turned to his own project. The eponymous collection launched in Spain in 2015 and expanded in 2017, and the Main Collection later grew to ten numbered fragrances alongside a Black Collection of high-concentration compositions, an Olfactory Journeys line, and an Elixir edition. In 2024 the house unveiled Nº 8 at the ESXENCE art-perfume fair in Milan and released Nº 5 Elixir.
Ownership
The house operates under PRFM Olfactive Expressions S.L., a Spanish company registered in Òrrius in the province of Barcelona [4]. The name preserves the "PRFM Barcelona" identity the father and son used at the outset. Following Rosendo Mateu's death, ownership and day-to-day management passed to Joan Mateu, who runs the company.
Philosophy and positioning
Rosendo Mateu presents itself as a family-run niche house built on its founder's long craft, offering numbered fragrances composed from what the company calls the finest raw materials at high concentration. Its tagline, "prestige and niche perfumer since 1968," reaches back to the year Mateu entered the trade rather than the year the label began. The brand's stated values centre on family, craftsmanship and artisanry, and it describes each fragrance as a product of the perfumer's lifelong dedication, with design and packaging overseen personally by him and his son.
Editorial coverage has echoed this framing in its own terms. Wikiparfum calls Mateu "one of the great names in contemporary perfumery" and characterises his style as balanced and restrained, working "like a craftsman works on light."
Products and innovation
The house is organised around its numbered Main Collection, which ranges across fresh Mediterranean, woody, floral and oriental styles, together with the more concentrated Black Collection, the Olfactory Journeys line, Elixir editions and discovery sets. A small hair-care line sits alongside the fragrances as a secondary category.
Its best-known scent is Nº 5, a floral-musk composition that Wikiparfum describes as having become "a cult favorite" and "the signature of his modern yet intimate approach." The range was later extended with Nº 5 Elixir in 2024, and Nº 8 made its debut at ESXENCE the same year.
Recognition
Beyond his fragrances, Mateu held several roles in the Spanish perfumery community in his final years. According to Beauty Cluster, he sat on its Advisory Council from 2018, presided over the jury of the Mouillette d'Argent International Perfumery Contest from the same year, and was named an academician of the Perfume Academy in 2021 [8]. His death in 2022 was marked by an obituary and a dedicated perfumer profile on Fragrantica [9].
Current status
The brand is active. Its founder, Rosendo Mateu, died on 12 May 2022; one reference source gives the year as 2021, but the May 2022 date is confirmed by Fragrantica's obituary, the Beauty Cluster tribute published that day, and the brand's own biography page [8][6]. Sources also differ on his birth year, giving 1945 or, in one outlier account, 1952 [7]. Since his death the house has continued under his son Joan, and its 2024 releases indicate ongoing operation. Its fragrances are distributed across European niche retailers and reach the Nordic markets.
