Summary

Overview

SAGELLA is an intimate-care brand for women, sold mainly through pharmacies. Its range covers wash lotions, intimate wipes and creams, and a small line of treatments registered as medical devices, with products aimed at different stages of life from puberty to menopause. The brand's German-language website is operated by Cooper Consumer Health Deutschland GmbH, part of the consumer-health company Cooper Consumer Health [2].

The brand is active. Its main appearance in independent press came in 2021, when the German consumer magazine ÖKO-TEST rated one of its wash lotions "ungenügend" (insufficient) [8].

Origin & founders

SAGELLA does not publish a founding year, a country of origin or the names of its founders, and its website has no history page. The name closely resembles Saugella, which the trade publication Campaign Asia described as an Italian pharmaceutical brand, reporting that its men's line Saugella Uomo was being launched in Thailand through Rottapharm Thailand [9]. Rottapharm itself began in 1961 as an independent research laboratory set up by Luigi Rovati, a professor of pharmacology at the University of Pavia [12]. It has occasionally been suggested that SAGELLA is the German-market name for Saugella, but the brand itself does not state this, and the link remains unconfirmed.

Ownership

Two companies have been publicly associated with SAGELLA at different times. When ÖKO-TEST published its 2021 test, it named Meda Pharma as the manufacturer of the SAGELLA wash lotion it examined [8]. The brand's current legal notice instead names Cooper Consumer Health Deutschland GmbH as the company behind the website [2], and the site's footer carries a 2026 copyright line in Cooper's name [1]. The two accounts reflect different points in time rather than a contradiction; the brand itself does not describe how ownership passed from one company to the other.

Under Cooper Consumer Health, SAGELLA sits alongside other over-the-counter brands such as Echinacin and CB12.

Philosophy & positioning

SAGELLA presents itself first as a daily intimate-hygiene brand. In its own words, it "supports all women in valuing and celebrating their femininity", and much of its communication is built around the idea that intimate care needs change over a woman's life.

That idea shapes the brand's editorial platform, W_wie_weiblich ("W as in weiblich", or feminine), which also gives its name to the brand's social-media accounts. The company frames the platform around three verbs: to educate, to inspire and to empower [3]. Its articles move through life stages in turn: first intimate care and puberty, care during menstruation, care in pregnancy, dryness during menopause, and the role of the skin's pH. One piece asks directly whether intimate wash lotions actually help, a question the brand answers from its own perspective.

The brand's emphasis on pH runs through the range. Several products are described as pH-balanced and soap-free, and online pharmacy listings describe the line as supporting the skin's natural acid mantle, the slightly acidic protective layer on the skin's surface [13].

Products & innovation

The core of the range is a family of intimate wash lotions, which the company describes as gynaecologically tested [4]. Each is pitched at a particular group or need:

- Daily Well-Being, a pH 3.5 wash lotion for adult women. - Active Pregnacare, developed for use during and after pregnancy. - poligyn 50+, intended for women during and after menopause. - Hydramed Acti3, which SAGELLA says is formulated for extra protection. - Hydraserum, a moisturising wash for intimate dryness.

Beyond the washes, the brand sells intimate wipes, which it describes as dermatologically tested, and two creams: Sensitive Balsam, intended for use after intimate shaving, and a poligyn 50+ moisturising cream containing calendula.

On ingredients, SAGELLA's own pages point to plant extracts such as chamomile and thyme. Pharmacy retailers selling the brand add natural lactic acid and sage extract to that list, and state that all SAGELLA products are dermatologically tested and recommended by gynaecologists [13].

The treatments line moves furthest from cosmetics. It includes gels and vaginal suppositories sold as medical devices: a poligyn 50+ gel and suppositories for menopausal dryness, and a gel and suppositories for bacterial vaginosis, an imbalance of the vaginal flora. According to the company, the moisturising gel brings relief from dryness, irritation and discomfort for up to 12 hours, while the bacterial vaginosis products treat its symptoms "in a natural way" [6]. The brand's product pages refer to scientific references but give no specific success rates.

Controversies

In September 2021, ÖKO-TEST published a test of intimate wash lotions in which SAGELLA pH 3.5 Waschlotion received the grade "ungenügend" [8]. The magazine's commissioned laboratory reported three main concerns.

The first was Lilial, a synthetic fragrance ingredient that EU law had classified since May 2020 as probably toxic to reproduction. The laboratory found it at a level below the threshold at which it must be declared on the label. The second was formaldehyde or substances that release it, which ÖKO-TEST noted can irritate mucous membranes even in small amounts. The third concerned PEG compounds, including the cleansing agent sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), which the magazine described as considered irritating to the skin.

ÖKO-TEST also objected more generally to the use of perfume in products that come into contact with the very thin vaginal skin. The article did not include a statement from the manufacturer, which the magazine identified at the time as Meda Pharma.

Current status

SAGELLA is an active brand. Its German website was live in 2026 with a current range of wash lotions, wipes, creams and medical-device treatments, together with its W_wie_weiblich articles, and it names Cooper Consumer Health Deutschland GmbH as its operator [1].
