Summary

Overview

Sora Dora is a French independent perfume house built around family heritage and storytelling. The modern brand was founded in 2021 by Quentin Dorado, who launched it as a revival of a lineage that traces back to his ancestor Antoine Soradora, a Portuguese-born perfumer who settled in Provence in the 1920s [5][7]. The house remains active, with fresh releases through 2024 and an online store still running under a 2026 copyright.

The brand's own account and its verifiable modern history diverge on when it began. Sora Dora's story page frames the house as one that has "become prestigious over four generations," implying continuity from Antoine's 1920s Grasse workshop [2]. Independent editorial sources, including retailer histories and a founder interview, place the actual founding of the niche brand in 2021 [5][7]. The article treats 2021 as the founding of the modern company and the 1920s as ancestral heritage rather than continuous operation.

Origin and founders

According to the brand, the story begins with Antoine Soradora, born on 16 July 1902 in Loulé, southern Portugal [2]. Sora Dora's story page recounts that he immigrated to France in 1920 at age eighteen to work in mining near Gréasque, cultivated an aromatic-plant garden in Provence, and met Etienne, a jasmine grower near Grasse, with whom he began experimenting in perfumery. After Etienne's death, the narrative says, Antoine took over the workshop and produced his first perfume. He married a woman named Rose and passed his craft to three daughters — Jany, Claudie and Marie-Rose.

The modern house takes its name from that ancestor, but its founder is Quentin Dorado. In an interview, he explained that "the brand name Sora Dora is a melding of my last name, Dorado, with Sora, the person who allowed me to start this project" — Sora being a family friend who provided initial funding [7]. Sources differ on the exact lineage: the brand site and one retailer describe Quentin as Antoine's grandson [5], while the founder interview specifies that Antoine was his great-great-grandfather, the father of Quentin's grandmother Jany [7].

Philosophy and positioning

Sora Dora presents itself as a modern French niche house that treats fragrance as emotional storytelling rooted in its founder's ancestry. Dorado has described his approach in direct terms: "Perfume is emotion in a bottle. If I don't feel emotions, I drop the project" [7]. The company frames each bottle as a vessel for Antoine Soradora's life and journey, and positions the work as an expression of what it calls the DNA of French perfumery, pursued without creative limits [7]. In the founder's account, the range is organised into two collections — a "black" line drawing on traditional French perfumery and a "white" line built on more abstract, modern techniques.

Products and innovation

The house launched with a 2021 collection of seven fragrances and has since expanded its catalogue to names including Destiny, Lü Bu, Ylop, Jany, Mallow, Gladiator, Gréasque, Kamel Oud, Orchidée Rouge, Vanuatu and Red, alongside multi-scent discovery kits. Its signature releases include Mandorle, an almond-led eau de parfum that moves through an icy cherry heart to a leather base, and Brocéliande, described as a warm, gourmand rum-and-lime composition. The house style leans on gourmand and woody materials — almond, tonka, vanilla, caramel, leather, jasmine and lavender recur across its fragrances. Later releases such as Mandorle and Brocéliande were developed with perfumers from the FLAIR studio, including Amélie Bourgeois and Anne-Sophie Behaghel [7].
