Summary

Overview

Stéphane Humbert Lucas is a French luxury niche fragrance house based in Paris, founded in 2013 by the perfumer of the same name [6]. Trained first as a painter, its founder built the house as a personal field of artistic expression, describing perfume composition as an art form on the level of painting or music. The house is best known internationally through its 777 line, and remains active, selling directly online and through retailers including Printemps and Harrods.

The name is a point of frequent confusion. Many retailers and directories list the house as "Stéphane Humbert Lucas 777" or "SHL 777," but the founder has clarified that 777 is only one collection within the wider house, which should be considered "Stéphane Humbert Lucas as a whole" [6]. The brand site presents itself simply as Stéphane Humbert Lucas Paris.

Origin & founder

Stéphane Humbert Lucas was born in France and trained in classical painting before turning to perfumery [7]. According to the house, he studied tempera painting in southern France and later at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, working under the direction of the sculptor Jean Cardot; he showed his work in galleries near the Centre Pompidou and opened a boutique-laboratory on Rue Quincampoix that combined paintings with perfumes.

He has synesthesia, a neurological trait in which one sense triggers another — in his case, visual stimuli that carry scent. The company presents this as central to his method: rather than inventing scents, he says he arranges existing materials, describing himself as "a matchmaker, a couturier of the invisible" [2]. An encounter with the niche perfumer Henri Sorsana encouraged him to compose using this ability.

Before launching his own house, Lucas worked as an in-house perfumer for Nez à Nez and SoOud, and created fragrances for both [7]. He established his eponymous house in 2013 [6].

History & milestones

The founding date carries a minor source discrepancy that reflects two separate events. Editorial sources including Kafkaesque and Luckyscent date the launch of the house to 2013 [6][7], and this article follows that year. The brand site separately dates La Collection 777 — the line that first drew wider attention — to 2012 [2]. The two are treated as adjacent milestones rather than a contradiction: the 2012 collection and the 2013 house.

La Collection 777 draws on the founder's travels in the Middle East. In his framing, the number seven stands for "perfection, happiness and wisdom," and 777 for "luck, protect and peace" [2]. A later line, La Collection Serpent, works with snake imagery drawn from myths and legends across cultures.

Philosophy & positioning

The house positions itself at the intersection of art and perfumery and states that it rejects marketing compromises, treating fragrance as a major art form. Its stated values are artistic integrity, fine raw materials, beauty, spirituality and self-fulfilment [2]. The founder's recurring lines — "Paris is my bottle, the world is my perfume" and "In order to make a beautiful perfume, I create another" — are used across the brand's own materials.

Independent reviewers place the work at the top of the niche market. The fragrance critic behind Kafkaesque characterises it as refined, smooth and expensive, drawing comparisons to houses such as Amouage and Frédéric Malle [6].
